BBC: Asteroid Hunters - Mathematical Methods Models & Modelling
A look at the science and scientists involved in Asteroid detection and orbit prediction.
Unlike in hollywood movies the detection and prediction of these rogue objects involves real hard science pursued by a dedicated band of Astronomers including those in the Near Earth Asteroid Tracking community. This is a look at how these Astronomers detect (usually involving at least 3 observations) then predict (using 6 mathematical variables of the Asteroids position) the uncounted thousands of Asteroids lurking in near earth orbits and beyond. We also see possible scientific solutions to the problem of preventing a catastrophic collision.
