New The Great Composers

The Great Composers: Antonin Dvorak (DVD No. 1)

DVD PAL | Video 720x576 (4:3) 25.00 fps | Audio: Dolby AC3 & DTS 48000 kHz | 3.5 GB RS
Label: Brilliant Classics | DVD Release Date: 8 Aug 2006 | Serie: Great Composers | 51 min. 53 sec.
Language: English, Nederlans, Le Français, Deutsch | Starring: Le Quator Morency

One of the greatest composers of Czech history, Dvorak was a proponent of nationalism in music, incorporating folk influences into his work in Classical music of all forms. This documentary is a poetic exploration of his life and work, interspersing historical segments with fantastical dance and music tableaux set in the Czech countryside. Like Dvorak's own work, it communicates the composer's deep love of his Bohemian country home, as well as his interest in trains and boats. The melodies and rhythms of the music, both spontaneous-sounding and formally precise, evoke the traditional myths and Slavic landscapes that inspired Dvorak's compositions. Featuring the Quatuor Morency, directed by Bernar Hébert, the musical selection includes the String Quartet No. 10 in E flat major, Op. 51.

This DVD is one in a series of 14 on the Brilliant Classics label entitled `Great Composers'. The DVD, typically around 50 to 60 minutes long and in 5.1 and DTS surround sound, is not intended as an in-depth biography but more of a documentary/period drama of the composers life, with a narration and often a performance (in period costume) of one of his popular works. The films, which are well choreographed to show scenery native to the composers life and historical items relevant to his time, are sufficiently brief as to provide just the most significant aspects of the composer and his music.

Franz Schubert - The Great Composers (DVD No. 2)

DVD PAL 2.9 GB | Video 720x480 (4:3) | Audio: Dolby AC3 & DTS
Label: Brilliant Classics, 2006 | Serie: Great Composers | 52 min.
Language: English, Spanish, Le Français, Italian

Interweaving documentary and fiction, this DVD introduces us to the musical world of Franz Schubert (1797-1828). A man of genius, despite his ill health and many complexes, Franz Schubert was the very embodiment of Romanticism. His too-short life was marked by a ceaseless quest for beauty and the perpetual presence of death. He died at the age of 31, having attained neither love nor glory, being too shy for the first, and lacking sufficient ambition for the latter. In his lifetime, he achieved modest success, essentially limited to a circle of friends. Yet, the passion he carried within him inspired him to compose some of the greatest chamber music of the classical repertoire.
Ill at ease in the world, Schubert seems to have lived on this earth for the sole purpose of composing, desperately seeking within music a means to escape the clutches of death.
In this film, we are introduced to the world of Franz Schubert through a series of documentary vignettes shot, for the most part, in Austria. These vignettes are interspersed with musical movements drawn from composer’s quartets and lieder. Performed on screen by musicians, these movements provide the score for a series of choreographed segments featuring costumed dancers and actors moving about in an imaginary setting.

Explore the life and music of Maurice Ravel (1875 - 1937). The DVD documentary introduces us to the world of French composer Maurice Ravel through one of his most lovely works, String Quartet in F major, performed on screen by the Canadian ensemble Quatuor Arthur Leblanc. The film presents a series of four dance segments interspersed with documentary vignettes. The choreographies correspond to the four movements comprising the work and recreate key elements of the French composer’s life. Drawing on archival documents, the vignettes offer a brief biography of Ravel.
Maurice Ravel led a peculiar life. A discreet child and an average student at the Conservatoire, he was a dandy during the belle époque, a soldier in the First World War, and a celebrity during the Roaring Twenties. The film explores different facets of the composer’s original personality, lingering notably on his interest in automatons and mechanics, his fascination with the world of children, his deep love for his mother and his passion for Spain. At once a solitary man and a man of the world, Ravel dedicated his entire life to his music.

As Romanticism was replaced with Impressionism in the early 20th century, Claude Debussy became its most influential composer, breaking with traditional form and harmony. This documentary explores Debussy's life and work, evoking the tumultuous times that gave rise to his progressive and innovative music. Structured around his String Quartet, this release evokes the Paris literary salons and café life within which Debussy moved, with directors Benoit Pilon and Bernar Hébert delivering a poetic interpretation that perfectly suits the poetry of the music.

Explore the life and music of Frédéric Chopin (1810 - 1849) Freely inspired by the life of the great Polish composer of piano music Frédéric Chopin and more specifically by his romantic liaison with the celebrated French novelist George Sand, this documentary style film is structured around two mature works by the musician and writer: Sonata for Piano and Cello by Chopin and Story of My Life by George Sand. The composer’s music is brought to life on screen through a choreographic staging where actors and dancers, who are seen alternately by themselves or in the company of musicians, attempt to recreate, within a symbolic décor, the universe inhabited by the two lovers.

Music tracks played in film:
Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor, B 160/Op. 65 by Frédéric Chopin
Performer: Carmen Picard (Piano), Elizabeth Dolin (Cello)
Impromptu for Piano no 4 in C sharp minor, B 87/Op. 66 "Fantaisie-Impromptu" by Frédéric Chopin
Performer: Gabriela Montero
