    The Roxy Music Story *

BBC 4 More Than This - The Roxy Music Story [2008]

Roxy Music exploded onto the music scene in 1972 with a combination of various musical influences together with singer Bryan Ferry's love of film, art and fashion that set them apart from the other musical acts of the day. More Than This... tells the story of Roxy Music from 1972 to the present day, with exclusive contributions from band members, the people who worked with them and luminaries who loved them. The film shows how they influenced generations of musicians and why they are still a musical force to be reckoned with. After moving to London to work as an artist and sculptor, Ferry, who studied fine art at Newcastle University, began to recruit the core members of Roxy Music. Together with Ferry, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay, Paul Thomson and Brian Eno give exclusive interviews for this film. When Eno left the band after the release of their second album, For Your Pleasure, the group recruited Eddie Jobson as a replacement. Their next LP, Stranded, was their first UK No. 1 album. The band released eight studio albums in 10 years, leaving a remarkable legacy of albums and singles, album sleeves, live shows and videos, before the group went their separate ways. In 2001 it was announced the group would reform with original members Ferry, Manzanera, MacKay and Thomson for a series of live shows. In 2006 Roxy Music returned to the studio to record new material for a new album, their first since Avalon in 1982. The film ends by visiting the group as they record this material and shows Ferry and Eno working together in the studio for the first time in more than 30 years.
Contributors include Bono, Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie Sioux, Nile Rodgers of Chic, John Taylor of Duran Duran, Alison Goldfrapp, Gary Tibbs, Martyn Ware of Human League, producers Chris Thomas and Rhett Davies, mix engineer Bob Clearmountain, artist Tim Head, journalists Richard Williams and Tim de Lisle and writers Simon Reynolds and Michael Bracewell
And, in addition, there is an interview in which Robin Denselow talks to Bryan Ferry about the success of Roxy Music over the previous ten years and what the future might hold. Includes a preview of a concert recorded before 15,000 people in Frejus, France.
