Carolina Chocolate Drops - Heritage (2008)
mp3 320kbps | 102MB
For the Carolina Chocolate Drops, retro-fabrication is a political matter, one that chimes with bluesman Otis Taylor's "Recapturing the Banjo" project.
Like him, they seek to redress the hijacking of seminal African-American musical forms by white musicians, so that today we naturally associate the banjo – an instrument with African origins – with country music.
The trio emulate the string-band tradition with soulful, harmonious versions of standards such as "Jack O'Diamonds" and "Po' Lazarus" sung to various combinations of banjo, fiddle, resophonic guitar, honking jug and sundry small percussion, with occasional cross-cultural experiments spicing up proceedings. <independent>
