Danú (1997)




Danú are an Irish traditional music band.
Danú were formed in Waterford in Southeastern Ireland in 1996. After performing in the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, the then thrown-together group decided to consolidate as a band, and the rest is history.They are fiercely devoted to their traditional roots, but are not afraid to experiment with arrangement, with critics commenting that their music exudes energy and empathy. Their second album, Think Before You Think (2000) was voted Best Overall Traditional Act by Dublin's magazine Irish Music. They have been voted Best Traditional Group twice in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the only band to achieve such a feat. Their version of Co. Down by Tommy Sands won Best Traditional Song in the same awards.

Danú - All Things Considered (2002)



The youthful seven-man traditional Irish group Danú continues their investigation of fiery authentic Irish jigs, reels, and ballads on their second CD for Shanachie Records, entitled All Things Considered. Roughly half of the songs are the instrumentals that the band has become famous for at festivals worldwide, but the most successful songs are the ones sung the by gentle-voiced Ciarán Ó Gealbháin, whose ballads and folk songs provide a welcome respite from the whirling blasts of the band's reels and jigs. Recorded over two years at Liam Clancy's studios in County Waterford and rehearsed over two years in nearby Mooney's Pub (seven generations in the family of Danú piper Donnchadh Gough), the tracks resonate with the deep wooden tones of both the pub and the legendary studio, each song flooded with rich history and warm companionship.

Danú - The Road Less Traveled (2003)


Traditional Irish septet Danú has undergone some changes since 2002's award-winning All Things Considered. Original guitar player Donal Clancy returned and, after three successful records, vocalist Ciarán Ó Gealbháin left to pursue the world of academics. His departure left newcomer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh to the arduous task of replacing a familiar voice and fronting an established band. Combining the deep soulfulness of June Tabor with the earthy phrasing of Norma Waterson, she punctuates The Road Less Traveled with grace and charm, adding depth to an already bottomless well of talent. Their beautiful cover of Fairport Convention's "Farewell, Farewell" echoes Sandy Denny without coming off as a carbon copy and the boisterous "Fairy Reel" begins like a light rain and then builds to a frenzy, utilizing violin double stops — rare in Celtic music — and the willowy bend of a uilleann pipe to great effect. Their authenticity is a strong asset, especially amongst the crowded sea of musicians currently storming the world's shores. There is a timeless locality to their music — like a pub without a town. Danú has yet to succumb to the slick, crossover Celtic-hybrid that permeates the post-Riverdance world, and, like a lighthouse, would do well to warn others of its empty, yet treacherous, waters.

Danú - When All Is Said and Done (2005)



Danu's sixth release finds the group going back to the more song-oriented format of 2003's Road Less Traveled. The talented Irish septet are masters of rustic playing and storytelling, relying on simple, immaculate arrangements and the rich alto of vocalist Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh to produce their own playful style of Celtic music that lacks even the slightest hint of pretension. Fiery instrumentals like "Around the House," "Coachman's Whip," and "Pots and Kettles O" showcase the group's exceptional playing while wistful ballads such as "CailÃ*n Deas Crúite Na Mbó" and "Farewell, Angelina" allow Nic Amhlaoibh to flex her vocals, bringing to mind a less affected Máire Brennan or early June Tabor. There's not a bad apple to be found, and while the band breaks little new ground, they do the traditional aspects of the genre proud. When All Is Said and Done is another worthy addition to the Danu canon, and one that bears repeated listens around the fire on cold winter days.
