The Waking Hour (2004)

Francey's Waking Hour — a collaboration with veteran Nashville roots musicians Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch and Fats Kaplin — is tipped to earn the composer and laconic, soft-spoken Scots émigré and former carpenter a hat trick by adding to roots and traditional-album-of-the-year Junos awarded to his two previous collections of original songs, Skating Rink and Far End of Summer. The Canadian music baubles are handed out in Winnipeg April 3. The show airs nationally in CTV.

"I try not to think about awards," says Francey, whose song "Saints and Sinners" (from his debut CD, Torn Screen Door) won first prize in the folk category of the 2004 USA Songwriting Competition. In January Francey appeared on CMT in the TV documentary, Four Strong Winds, a celebration of Canadian songwriters and their impact on popular music, and his vivid pastoral compositions are taught in classrooms across Canada.

"But I can't deny my life changed after I won my first Juno. I was still a construction worker then, and I hadn't even started playing guitar. I remember Beth, my wife, saying, `Maybe you should try this music thing fulltime for a while.'"

Now one of Canada's hottest festival headliners and a fixture on international festival and concert bills, Francey is about as famous as a folksinger can get, distributed in the U.S. on the formidable roots label Red House Records, and a guaranteed sell-out wherever he plays.

This collection of original Francey tunes shares the simple recording style of David's first three CDs but adds a driving rhythm provided by these amazing Nashville artists.

Right of Passage (2007)

Right of Passage is an intimate recording of thirteen original David Francey songs, backed by a stellar cast of musicians, who joined David at Signal Path Studio in the beautiful town of Almonte, Ontario. The time spent in the studio was joyful. The sessions were filled with excitement as the new songs were captured one by one.
Right of Passage reflects the passion and emotion with which David views his world - a world where he and his pal "laughed [their] words in steady streams", where he dreamt of his wife while sitting "under a sky of hodden grey" and where a smile "filled the emptiness".

A lot of musicians wax rhapsodic about the vagabond life; David Francey knows better. A Scottish native and Canadian immigrant, Francey has buttered his bread as a rail worker, a carpenter, an ore carrier shipmate, and a Yukon bush wrangler. He’s also won Juno Awards and has written some of the best songs you’ll ever hear.

"In late May of 2005, thanks to the Canada Council for the Arts and Algoma Central Marine, we were granted the incredible opportunity to spend two weeks aboard the MV Algoville. The captain and crew of this 750-foot bulk carrier of the Algoma Central Laker fleet allowed us to witness life onboard first-hand. We sailed from Montreal to Thunder Bay and back along the Saint Lawrence Seaway and the majestic inland sea of the Great Lakes. We are indebted to Algoma Central Marine and all those on board the Algoville, who made this trip possible. It is to that hard-working crew that we dedicate these songs."
