Down South (1984)

This is such a phenomenal album! Doc Watson and his son, Merle (with help from some friends), recorded what I would consider to be the ultimate southern roots album. The tunes on this collection span well over a hundred years, from the Civil War ("Bright Sunny South") to the 1930's ("Hello Stranger") to somewhat contemporary ("Solid Gone") to country gospel ("What A Friend We Have In Jesus"), it's all here. There's a consistency about this album that, although recorded in the early '80's, it has a very old-timey feel to it. Is it folk? Definitely! Is it country? Could be, although country radio stayed away from it. Is it traditional? Absolutely! One of the most traditional back porch albums I've ever heard! There is nothing contemporary in the feeling of this CD. And every note sung and played comes straight from the heart.

'Down South' is the perfect title for this album, because it is truly a regional recording, and it's the one record I can turn to that will give me a 'south of the mason-dixon' feel. It sounds like what you might hear at a southern family reunion. Another of my 'desert island discs.' Coming from someone who lives nowhere near the Bright Sunny South (unless southern Michigan counts), well, that's a pretty high compliment! (Amazon review)

Riding the Midnight Train (1986)

From the liner notes: "The guitar player who has influenced and been revered by virtually every great bluegrass flatpicker from Clarence White to Tony Rice, has never considered himself to be a bluegrass musician. Odd as this may seem, Doc Watson's assessment of himself is correct. His music transcends all conventional labels and, while Riding The Midnight Train is Doc's first all-bluegrass album, it's bluegrass done Watson style.

"When planning this album, Merle Watson [Doc's son] insisted on taking a low profile, sensing that this album would be an historic occasion for his father. And what an occasion it turned out to be! The players on this album were not simply coming in for one session on the way to another. No, they were representative of the brightest young pickers who stood in awe of Doc Watson."

This is the last album on which Merle Watson performed with his father, prior to his tragic death on his farm (tractor rollover accident) in 1985.

Doc & Merle Watson's Guitar Album

Label: Flying Fish
Year: 1972

I've talked about the incredible instrumental genius and warm character of Doc Watson before. He never missed a note, and he never played one where one wasn't needed. He turned a generation of folk musicians and guitar players on their heads and took all their praise and imitation in stride. He had no secrets: if you wanted to know how he played a lick or a song, well he'd sit down right there and show you (but you'd better be quick, because he didn't repeat himself, even to his own backup musicians).

His son, Eddy Merle Watson was just as good, but largely unrecognized. Perhaps because his style wasn't as uniqely original as docs (it was sort of a country-boogie-blues fingerpicking with one foot in the waters of the Mississippi delta and the other in the fires of southern rock). Listen to Talking to Casey and you'll realize he belongs among the great slide-guitarists. Or perhaps ne never became famous because he just plain didn't care to be. He was quite content to sit in the background and let his father bask blindly in the spotlight. He held no resentment, that's just the way he liked it.

Tragically, Merle died around the time I was born, whilst joy-riding a tractor on the family farm. But before he departed this world, he gave us the latent gift of his son, Richard Watson who has grown up to be a fine guitarist in his own right. Any recording with Doc & Merle is a treasure, for it captures the same sort of united father-son dynamic that the Romeros have.

On this album, they're joined by the always-welcome fiddler extrordinaire Mark O'Connor, the sometimes-too-loud bassist T. Michael Coleman, and a completely unneccesary drummer. And on one track, they're accosted by jingly chime sounds, no doubt due to the nefarious producer falling asleep at his station.

The tracks are mostly instrumental, and span a wide stylistic field, from hard-driving bluegrass-rock to swanky jazz ditties to soundscapes of Americana (they rearrange Take Me Out to the Ball game in much the same way that John Fahey rearranged hymns and Christmas songs).

As bass-player T. Michael Coleman says, "The tunefulness and ensemble of these two are just marvelous, and the album is recorded in excellent sound, clear and never strident. The superb fiddling of Mark O'Connor is the icing on the cake. No fan of great guitar playing should be without this album. "

From Allmusic:
Like Pickin' the Blues, Guitar Album features Doc and Merle Watson supported by a small band and playing blues. Both guitarists play with deft, nimble grace, spinning out surprisingly hard-edged lines that are simultaneously fluid and gritty.

(1964) - Doc Watson

To those of us who have spent hundreds of hours slowing down Doc Watson
records in order to learn the tastefully selected notes that he plays
and emulate the clear, crisp tone he pulls out of his instrument, Doc is
a legend. However, Doc's influence extends far beyond the small niche of
guitar players who try to faithfully reproduce his guitar breaks because
Doc Watson is not just a guitar player and singer - he is an American hero.
To be recognized as a "national treasure" by President Jimmy Carter, honored
with the National Medal of the Arts by President Bill Clinton, and given an
honorary doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina calls for
being more than a fine musician and entertainer. Doc Watson received these
accolades not just for his talent, but for the honor, integrity, humility,
grace, and dignity which he has displayed throughout his long and distinguished
career. While there are many, many great guitar players and singers; there is
only one Doc Watson.

Bill Monroe & Doc Watson - Off The Record, Vol. 2: Live Duet Recordings, 1963-1980

Year: 1993
Label: Smithsonian Folkways

The essential genius of Bill Monroe and Doc Watson resides in their ability to infuse traditional American music with their distinctive musical personalities. Their unparalleled vocal and instrumental skills complement one another on these rare, previously unreleased duets. "...Chronicles the early meetings of two instrumental geniuses." — Billboard

Amazon essential recording
A 45-minute trip to bluegrass heaven, these 17 songs combine the talents of two unparalleled musical forces: Bill Monroe, the inventor of bluegrass, master of the mandolin, and owner of a bone-chilling, mountain tenor voice; and Doc Watson, the flatpicking genius with a soulful, mellow vocal tone. Much of the material stems from the legendary Monroe Brothers recordings. Their sublime harmonies carry plaintive ballads including "What Would You Give in Exchange for Your Soul" and "Banks of the Ohio," and uptempo numbers such as "You Won't Be Satisfied That Way." The roaring fiddle tunes are simply mind-blowing: "Soldier's Joy," "East Tennessee Blues," and "Fire on the Mountain" all rank as virtuosic masterpieces. If it's possible, the pairing exceeds all expectations. --Marc Greilsamer

Review by Ron Wynn
Any time two greats who admire each other and are musically compatible team together, the results are usually mutually beneficial. That was true for Bill Monroe and Doc Watson, whose spirited union on this 17-song disc is a sampler of American musical styles. They ripped through bluegrass, folk, blues, spirituals, mountain tunes, work songs, reels and breakdowns. Monroe's mandolin and Watson's guitar playing were masterful, wondrous and performed without any trace of self-indulgence. Their vocals were also delivered with ease, fluidity and conviction, the product of two performers completely at ease with themselves and only interested in spotlighting the material.

Songs from Home

Review by William Ruhlmann
After stints on Folkways and Vanguard Records in the '60s and early '70s, Doc Watson contracted with the independent Poppy label, which earned a distribution deal with United Artists (UA) in the wake of the success of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's 1972 UA album Will the Circle Be Unbroken, on which Watson appeared. Having released Elementary Doctor Watson! on Poppy in 1972, followed by Then and Now in 1973 and Two Days in November in 1974 (all of these albums actually co-credited to Doc & Merle Watson), he next issued the double-LP Memories directly on UA in 1975, following with 1976's Doc and the Boys and then three more Doc & Merle albums, 1977's Lonesome Road, 1978's Look Away!, and 1979's Live and Pickin'. Four of those eight albums made the country charts, and one, Memories, even made the pop charts, but that was the end of Watson's sojourn with a large national label; by 1981, he was back to recording for the small folkie independent Flying Fish. This 49-minute, 17-track compilation draws on the Poppy/UA catalog, long since acquired by Capitol Records. Just as Watson's pact with UA was a response to the success of the traditional Will the Circle Be Unbroken, this release, part of a series of Capitol country and bluegrass compilations, is a response to the success of the traditional O Brother, Where Art Thou? Fine, if that's what it takes. The team of Watson, father and son, is in fine form on these recordings, which include covers of material by Mississippi John Hurt, Jimmie Rodgers, and others, plus traditional tunes. "Big Sandy/Leather Britches" was a deserving recipient of the 1979 Grammy Award for best country instrumental performance. The recording quality is high and the performances are stellar, making this an excellent sampler of Watson's music.

The Watson Family (1990)

The Watson Family is the title of a recording by American folk music artist Doc Watson and The Watson Family, originally released in 1963.

The Watson Family is taken from field recordings by Ralph Rinzler, Eugene W. Earle, Archie Green, and Peter Siegel, done from 1960 to 1963. It was re-released on Smithsonian Folkways on CD in 1990 with additional tracks from the 1970's.

Doc Watson, grandfather of the folk revival movement, has had a profound influence on American traditional music. Not only did he pioneer the playing of fiddle tunes on a flattop guitar, but through his incessant touring has brought traditional music to a larger audience. This Smithsonian Folkways release captures not only Doc Watson, but almost a dozen family members at the height of their power and has been deservingly hailed as a classic recording. Right from the opening track, "Old Groundhog," Watson and family send the listener on an amazing journey into the American musical past and present. Incidentally, their performance of "Old Groundhog" is certainly the equal of Bascom Lamar Lunsford's "I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground," in terms of surreal country, capturing as it does race relations, commentary on shoe strings, as well directions for catching a groundhog. On "The House Carpenter," a weepy tale of that conflates religious and personal love, a haunting female voice sings almost off-key accompanied only by a fiddle that doubles on the melody. On the instrumental "Bonaparte's Retreat," Watson offers a droning, sea shanty-influenced version of this song staple of Mississippi river communities. Some of the family's best work is found in the spirituals scattered about the album. "When I Die" features a beautiful, uplifting three-part harmony, as does "The Lost Soul," which contains the wickedly abject refrain, "I'm paying now/the penalty." A fabulous record that's a must-listen for any serious fan of American music. ~ Brian Whitener

Watson Family Tradition (1977)

The greatest recordings are often ones that include periods of complete rejection in their histories. These tapes were made in 1964 but not made available to the public until more than a dozen years later, when the music was finally released in America and the United Kingdom by Rounder and Topic, respectively. The Watson in question is indeed Doc Watson, and while this huge presence in American folk music dominates the proceedings like the Jolly Green Giant looking out over the vegetable fields, this album completely stands out from that artist's discography. Listeners who find Doc Watson's recordings a trifle on the slick side will want to give this collection a listen. While the man has become a highly acclaimed international performer and has graced the most important stages in the world, he comes from a tradition of music that was originally made at home for the entertainment of family and neighbors. A great old-time fiddler may have enjoyed being the hero of his county, but he did not aspire to play at Carnegie Hall or do solo sellout nights at a slick nightclub such as the Bottom Line. Performing music in such venues inevitably is the domain of highly polished entertainers who can hold large audiences in the palms of their hands, giving the types of performances that tend to be several worlds away from those featured here. Members of the extended Watson Family -- father in law, distant cousin, what have you -- get involved here in a series of solos and small groupings, the recorded sound as rough as a chunk of whittling wood and the tunings sometimes even rougher. It is the real thing, and an album that by itself could serve as a fine introduction in every way to the charming world of old-time music, including diverse examples of its harmonic and melodic structures as well as the typical subject matter of songs such as "I Heard My Mother Weeping." All the instruments associated with this genre are here in full force, including banjo, fiddle, guitar, and the unaccompanied vocal.

There are several performances that are incredibly powerful, particularly "Am I Born to Die?," sung by Doc Watson accompanied only by Gaither Carlton on fiddle.
