    Jesse Colin Young

Jesse Colin Young got his start as a folksinger in Greenwich Village coffeehouses in the early '60s, releasing two major-label albums, The Soul of a City Boy (April 1964) and Young Blood (March 1965). He met guitarist Jerry Corbitt in Cambridge, MA, and with keyboardist/guitarist Lowell "Banana" Levinger and drummer Joe Bauer, they formed the Youngbloods, initially playing in the jug band, good-time style of the Lovin' Spoonful. Signed to RCA, they released their debut single, Corbitt's "Grizzly Bear," a chart entry, in November 1966, followed by their self-titled debut album in February 1967. The album featured the group's version of Dino Valenti and Bob Cullen's idealistic folk anthem "Get Together," which was released as a single in July and also made the charts. Earth Music (November 1967) followed. By the time of Elephant Mountain (April 1969), they had moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and Corbitt had dropped out. RCA re-released "Get Together" as a single after it was used as in a public-service commercial for the National Council of Christians and Jews, and it became a gold Top Ten hit. The Youngbloods also made the singles charts with Young's songs "Sunlight" (November 1969) and "Darkness, Darkness" (May 1970). Forming their own Raccoon Records label with distribution by Warner Brothers, they released the live albums Rock Festival (October 1970) and Ride the Wind (July 1971), followed by the studio album Good and Dusty (November 1971). Young recorded a solo album, Together (March 1972), and due to its success he disbanded the Youngbloods after their final album, High on a Ridge Top (November 1972). He then made Song for Juli (September 1973), Light Shine (March 1974), Songbird (February 1975), On the Road (April 1976), and Love on the Wing (March 1977), all of which charted in the Top 100. He moved to Elektra Records for the less successful American Dreams (November 1978) and The Perfect Stranger (July 1982). Like most folk-rock singer/songwriters, he was abandoned by the major labels in the '80s, but he continued to tour in an acoustic format, also appearing with a re-formed Youngbloods lineup featuring Corbitt and Banana (Bauer had died) in 1984 and 1985. He returned to recording in 1987 with The Highway Is for Heroes on the short-lived Cypress Records label. He launched his own Ridgetop Music label, releasing Makin' It Real (October 1993), and followed with Swept Away (September 1994), Crazy Boy (1995), a compilation, and Sweetwater (June 1996), a live album. Meanwhile, he had acquired the rights to his Mercury, Warner Brothers, and Elektra albums and began to reissue them. This effort was interrupted by a fire at his home in October 1995 that destroyed some of his album masters. But he pacted with Bean Bag Entertainment, and the reissue program has resumed.

Twenty-two-year-old Perry Miller was spotted by pianist/composer Bobby Scott at Folk City in Greenwich Village and signed to Capitol Records under the auspices of Scott's employer, Bobby Darin. Scott took Miller, now renamed Jesse Colin Young, into New York's A&R Studios in the spring of 1964, and they emerged four hours later with this 31-minute, 11-track acoustic-guitar-and-vocal debut album. Young proved to be an adept guitarist conversant with all the basic fingerpicking folk patterns, and to have an expressive, elastic tenor voice with just a touch of graininess to keep him from sounding too smooth. His six originals were fine but unexceptional, and his covers of songs like "Rye Whiskey" were pleasant. In the folk boom of the early '60s, The Soul of a City Boy was just one more entry in the dominant style, and it would not be remembered today if Young had not gone on to bigger and better things. But it demonstrates that in his early 20s, he had a good grasp of the playing, singing, and writing talents upon which he would build in later years. The album did not sell upon release, but when it was reissued for the second time in January 1974 in the wake of the success of Young's Song for Juli album, it made the charts for several weeks. (Originally released as Capitol 2070 in April 1964, The Soul of a City Boy was reissued under the misleading title Jesse Colin Young & the Youngbloods in 1967 with the same catalog number; reissued under its original title as Capitol 11267 in January 1974; and reissued under its original title as One Way Records/CEMA Special Harkets S21-17526 in 1995.)

    Together

    Folk/Rock/Blues | MP3 320 Kbps | 90 Mb | 1972

Made while the Youngbloods were still together, Jesse Colin Young's first solo album since 1965's Young Blood was a busman's holiday on which he played favorite songs from a variety of genres -- '50s rock & roll (Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little 16"), country (the Dave Dudley hit "6 Days on the Road"), folk-blues (Mississippi John Hurt's "Creole Belle"), Chicago blues (the Butterfield Blues Band song "Born in Chicago"), and folk (Woody Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty"). Having covered those bases, Young also introduced some timely originals, such as "Peace Song," an anti-war anthem, and "Good Times," which was very reminiscent of the rustic sound Van Morrison had found recently on such albums as Tupelo Honey. It all made for an enjoyable, if unambitious album that reached the charts for several weeks, which inspired Young to give the Youngbloods notice and, after one more album and tour with them, relaunch his solo career full-time. (Originally released in March 1972 as Raccoon/Warner Brothers 2588, Together has been reissued by Ridgetop Music.)

    Song For Juli

    Folk/Rock | MP3 320 Kbps | 93 Mb | 1973
    Covers included

Although it was his fourth solo album, Song for Juli was Jesse Colin Young's first full-fledged effort under his own name, following a couple of early folk records, a series of Youngbloods albums, and the tentative Together. Young organized a versatile backup band in which piano, violin, and horns complemented his tenor voice in arrangements that recalled Van Morrison's Caledonia Soul Orchestra (no surprise, since Young and Morrison used several of the same musicians, notably reed player Jim Rothermel) and featured familiar blues, country, and Cajun elements. In his lyrics, Young hewed closely to the current back-to-the-land philosophy, celebrating his family life (Juli is his daughter) and his "Ridgetop" retreat in Marin County, CA. It was a viewpoint that was both self-affirming and xenophobic -- you couldn't help thinking that the people he wanted to leave him alone and the tourists he wanted to keep at bay included at least a few of his listeners. Of course, that's not the way it was thought of at the time, and Young's fans responded strongly to Song for Juli, giving it a higher chart placing than any album the Youngbloods ever made and keeping it in the charts longer than any album he ever made. (Originally released in September 1973 as Warner Brothers 2734, Song for Juli was reissued as Ridgetop Music 1105.)

    On The Road

On a series of solo albums, Jesse Colin Young had developed a strong musical rapport with a group of players including drummer Jeff Myer, keyboard player Scott Lawrence, and especially horn man Jim Rothermel, whose flute and soprano sax lines duetted with Young's tenor vocals. Adding David Hayes (one of several bassists who had appeared on his studio releases) and his wife Suzi on harmonies, Young produced this excellent live album, on which he mixed Youngbloods favorites ("Sunlight") with some of his better solo material ("Peace Song," a 12½-minute version of "Ridgetop") and some well-chosen covers (a medley of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," Randy Newman's "Have You Seen My Baby") for a varied program that emphasized his eclectic talents. (Originally released in March 1976 as Warner Brothers 2913, On the Road was reissued in 1995 as Ridgetop Music 1055).

    Love On The Wing (Vinyl)

    Folk/Rock | MP3 320 Kbps | 91 Mb | 1977

Despite earning respectable sales, Jesse Colin Young's solo albums had failed to generate the kind of hits that could have consolidated his career. Love on the Wing, his first studio album in two years, was co-produced by Felix Pappalardi, with whom Young had worked on some of the Youngbloods albums. Warner released the title track, a lovely ballad written by Blue Hazelhurst, and "Higher Higher," the leadoff track, another of Young's I-want-to-stay-home-with-my-family- and-not-go-on-the-road songs, as singles, but only the latter saw any radio or sales response, and even that wasn't enough to make the Top 100. Used to be, singles wouldn't have mattered to an artist like Young, but with record companies cooling to singer/songwriters, radio tightening up, and musical trends tending toward punk and disco, it was harder for a thoughtful artist like him to gain exposure for his new music. Love on the Wing was a low-key effort with an undercurrent of sadness -- the singer seemed disappointed with the domestic life that had given him satisfaction before, and he certainly hadn't warmed to the music business. Unfortunately, short of a career breakthrough, "Workin"' on the road was the only way he had of getting his music out. At the same time, working with the same group of musicians he had been using for years, he seemed to have reached the end of their musical development, even with the added horn and string arrangements on some tracks. Love on the Wing delivered more of the same at a time when Young needed to try something different, and that was reflected in a slight fall-off in sales, after which he parted ways with Warner Brothers. (Originally released as Warner Brothers 3033 in March 1976, Love on the Wing has been reissued by Ridgetop Music.)

    Euphoria 1965-69

    Folk/Rock/Pop | MP3 256 Kbps | 153 Mb | 1998
    Covers included

This Australian import chronologically gathers over two dozen tracks from '60s folk-rockers the Youngbloods. Euphoria 1965-1969 opens up with four Jesse Colin Young compositions that feature the original quartet of Young (guitar/bass/vocals), Jerry Corbitt (bass), Lowell Levinger (keyboards), and Joe Bauer (drums). The tracks "Another Strange Town," "Hey Babe," "Sometimes," and "Rider" were cut and released under a deal that Young had with Mercury Records, eventually surfacing on Two Trips With Jesse Colin Young (1968). The remainder of this disc is amply divided among highlights from the Youngbloods' self-titled debut LP (1967) -- including the rare 45 rpm-only track "Merry Go Round" -- as well as Earth Music (1967) and Elephant Mountain (1969). There is a notable evolution in the band's sound, which was greatly informed by Young and Corbitt's East Coast folky roots. This turned up on early tracks such as "Grizzly Bear" and their straight-ahead, driving, up-tempo cover of "Statesboro Blues." Both contain a carefree jug band sensibility akin to what the Lovin' Spoonful and Blues Project had also been doing. The heavily distorted electric guitars and funky syncopated rhythm found on the cover of Fred Neil's "Other Side of This Life" foreshadows their relocation to the San Francisco Bay Area in late 1967. Other highlights include the laid-back charm of "Foolin' Around (The Waltz)," as well as a down-home reading of Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe" -- both precursors to the pastoral country/rock movement of the early '70s. Corbitt left midway through the making of their third album, the critically acclaimed Elephant Mountain. This disc -- the last represented here -- keeps much of the organic sounds, brilliant songwriting, and rural charisma of their previous long-player, Earth Music. Standout cuts include "Darkness Darkness," "Ride the Wind," and the haunting "Sunlight." The notable exception is "Rain Song (Don't Let It...)," which sits oddly out of step, recalling the band's former campy good-time sound.

    Good And Dusty

For their final pair of albums, the Youngbloods returned to a four-piece band with the addition of Michael Kane on bass as Jesse Colin Young moved to guitar (and saxophone!). Good and Dusty is a low-key, homey effort comprised largely of '50s and blues cover songs. Of the original compositions, "Hippie from Olema No. 5" is a dated rewrite of Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee," the title track is a brief jazz jam, and "Drifting and Drifting" is another stab at the blues. Only the closing "Light Shine" shows a glimmer of Young's songwriting skills; complemented by a modest sax arrangement, it stands head and shoulders above most of the album. The high point is the charming "Circus Face," performed with tasteful mandolin and French horn, which serves as a frustrating reminder of what the Youngbloods could accomplish with strong outside material.

    Ride The Wind

    Folk/Rock/Jazz | MP3 128 Kbps | 35 Mb | 1971

Ride the Wind is nothing like the Youngbloods' studio albums. It is stripped down and stunning in its simplicity. Just three members of the band play here; Jesse Colin Young with his bass guitar and expressive vocals, Joe Bauer on drums, and the wild-looking Banana on guitar and electric piano.
Two songs, the title cut and Sunlight, alone take this CD into 5-star territory. The piano work is jazzily superb and Young's voice is at its best. Sunlight in particular is an excellent mood-setter for when the lights are low and you are with a lover.
Sugar Babe has a vaguely country feel to it and features a kazoo interlude by Jesse. The Dolphin is my least favorite, the instrumentation is OK but the vocals are weak. I prefer It's A Beautiful Day's version.
The album follows with a serviceable treatment of their hit Get Together and closes with a rousing interpretation of Beautiful.
I never did have the good fortune of seeing the Youngbloods live, but Ride The Wind has to be the next best thing. My old album being pretty scratched up, I have waited for years for this to be reissued on CD. Who knows how long it will be available?
If you are a fan on any level, and particularly if you never heard this album, you are in for a treat. Do your ears a favor and order it soon.
