Sea Sew 2008

After years of supplying, sweet, soul searching and at times sad panged harmonies to singer songwriter Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan's first solo effort is a unique collection of simple sweet natured songs.
Full of quirky imagery that uses the minutiae of life to set scenes and reveal emotions, Hannigan's own music has a more cheerful and whimsical view of life than Rice's melancholic acoustic musings.
On album opener 'Ocean and a Rock' Hannigan sings 'I spoon you into my coffee cup' and 'I feel you in the pocket of my overcoat' with a playful infatuation and youthfulness that makes this an album to smile as well as sing along too.

Live at Fingerprints EP (2008)

It's been a very good 2009 for Hannigan. Her debut solo album, Sea Sew, was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize and she made several trips touring through North America, including as the opening act for David Gray. To top it all off she was kind enough to do an interview with this very blogger.
Live At Fingerprints captures Hannigan and her band in a stripped down setting at the California record store. The atmosphere works well in enhancing her already intimate sound and touching lyrics. The arrangements envelope the songs, providing them a protective shell in which they can grow and flourish.
This format works particularly well in highlighting Hannigan's vocals, which are a strength. Her voice is not traditionally beautiful, but she possesses a warmth and depth that come shining through. That makes songs like "Sea Song" and "I Don't Know" incredibly inviting to the listener.
Don't expect a crazy rock n' roll party out of Hannigan. She is a pretty straightforward performer, yet one who obviously opens herself up to her audience through her music. Fans should appreciate this glimpse into a truly endearing musician.
