Los Folkloristas was founded in 1966 to preserve and record the traditional music of Mexico and Latin America. They were honored in 1996 at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico with a special concert given in honor of their 30th anniversary and again on their 35th anniversary in 2001. They have recorded more than 30 albums worldwide and contributed to the soundtrack for the award-winning films "El Norte" and "My Family."
graphicWith more than 100 instruments in their collection, this seven-member ensemble can perform music from over a dozen different countries and even from pre-Columbian America. They continue to be one of the most popular groups from all of Latin America, receiving the INDIE award in World Music from the National Association of Record Distributors (NAIRD) in 1992 for their Flying Fish recording Mexico!.
Entertaining and equally educational, Los Folkloristas opens the door to a traditional culture, fantastic to both young and old! Be sure to catch them on tour.

-- E. Camacho, Excelsior, Mexico City

"It is easy to understand why they are popular. They bring together with a special feeling all of the Latin American materials."
-- Donald Smith, Evening Star, Washington, DC
"When the show ended, the seven singer/musicians received an extended ovation interspersed with cheers and bilingual cries for more."
-- Craig Arnott, California Aggie, Davis, CA
"The only predictable thing about one of their performances is that something peculiarly true and beautiful will surface during the evening." - The Christian Science Monitor

Anyone living in Southwestern cities like San Diego, El Paso and Phoenix stands a good chance of being exposed to a variety of Mexican and Mexican-American music (which ranges from contemporary tejano and banda to more traditional mariachi and ranchero). Strictly traditional and entirely acoustic, Mexico! celebrates the south-of-the-border folk songs that have been a part of Mexican culture for generations. "El Mayor De Los Dorados" (an ode to Pancho Villa), "Coplas De Arcadio Hidalgo" and other classics heard on this CD have graced many Mexican events over the years. If one notices some similarity between songs like "El Sacamandu," "El Chande" and "El Diablo" and Afro-Cuban music, it's because they are examples of son -- one of the forms that has influenced salsa. (Of course, Mexicans and Cubans have very different approaches to the son.) A cohesive, good-spirited band, Los Folkloristas spare no passion on this solid effort.
