''Following on the heels of the fluke success of Loudon Wainwright III's only hit single, "Dead Skunk," Attempted Mustache is an excellent encapsulation of all things Loudon. Even so, sales were disappointing, and Wainwright's audience did not expand beyond that of a small, loyal cult. The LP kicks off with "The Swimming Song," a tongue-in-cheek celebration full of clever lines, banjo pickin' and a touch of Doug Kershaw's Cajun fiddle. "A.M. World" reflects on life with a hit single, obviously written while "Dead Skunk" was climbing the charts. "Liza" is an a cappella folk song about childhood friend and classmate Liza Minnelli, who had recently won an Oscar for Cabaret. "I Am the Way" recasts Woody Guthrie's talking blues "New York Town," with Jesus Christ hanging out in Jerusalem proclaiming, "Every Son of God gets a little hard luck some time," and confessing, "Don't tell nobody but I kissed Magdalene." "Dilated to Meet You" is a welcome-to-the-world greeting card for a soon-to-be-born child, but on "Lullaby," the singer pleads with his son Rufus to "shut up and go to bed," complaining "you're a late night faucet that's got a drip." This album also includes the Wainwright classic "The Man Who Couldn't Cry," a lengthy short story set to music about a character who suffers all manner of tragedy and abuse, but is still incapable of showing emotion. Throughout Attempted Mustache, Loudon Wainwright III's droll, dry sense of humor is conveyed by his world-weary Everyman's voice, capturing small vignettes of life through a skewed, slightly left-of-center lens. Career Moves (1993)



''Career Moves is a 1993 live album by Loudon Wainwright III - his first since 1980's A Live One, which itself compiled mid 70's live recordings.

In other words it is a compilation of Wainwright's songs, mostly from the 80's, but with a generous fistful of new tracks. Allmusic awards it 4.5 out of 5 stars, and it probably remains as representative an introduction to Wainwright's work and styles as anything he's recorded before or since.

It also has the virtue of including the important "April Fool's Day Morn", originally from Fame and Wealth, which was inexplicably left off the compilation 1983-86, as well as "Thanksgiving" from the otherwise uncompiled Therapy'' (Wikipedia)

I'm Allright (1985)



''I'm Alright is a 1985 album by Loudon Wainwright III. It was his third release on Rounder Records, recorded in London. It was produced by Richard Thompson, who also played electric lead guitar on several songs. The back cover features a photo of the two together, captioned 'Loud and Rich'.
The poignant "Screaming Issue", one of Wainwright's few collaborations - this time with his second wife Suzzy Roche of The Roches - was never compiled, nor has it appeared on a live album. It concerned his then infant daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche, who has since played and recorded with him.
This album continued Wainwright's reinvention of himself as an acoustic-based artist, and was the first of his Richard Thompson produced collaborations, which would peak critically the following year with More Love Songs
Richard Thompson continued to tour with Wainwright, and Danny Thompson of Pentangle into the late 1990's. His most recent appearance on a LW3 album was 2003's So Damn Happy.'' (Wikipedia)

''So Damn Happy is the third live album by Loudon Wainwright III. It was recorded at Largo in West Hollywood, California and released in 2003. It features, amongst others, Van Dyke Parks and Richard Thompson (though Thompson only plays on "The Home Stretch")
By this stage of his career, and excluding 1982-86, Wainwright had yet to release a compilation album. In fact, to this day (1/1/08), and not counting his latest album "Recovery," which features re-recordings of older songs, this remains true. It gradually became apparent that his numerous live albums were fulfilling the same function.
Unrequited, 1975, one side of which comprised live tracks, was a snapshot of his career at the time. A Live One, though released in 1980 compiled mid 70's live recordings, many of which arguably surpassed their studio forebears. 1993's Career Moves compiled his 80's and early 90's songs, as well as adding a fistful of new tracks. BBC Sessions in 2000 drew on material from a wide range of his career, including hard to find 70's songs, such as "Prince Hal's Dirge" and "School Days". Finally (so far) So Damn Happy compiles mostly 90's material, particularly from Grown Man (1995) with the obligatory offering of new songs, as well as the first properly solo version of "Tonya's Twirls" - a typically ironic and bittersweet song about Tonya Harding, which he had been playing live as early as 1993.
Considering the harrowing Last Man on Earth (2001), this lighter live disc was perhaps a necessary sequel.'' (Wikipaedia)

I have no other information except for the location and year of this classic show, though I would guess at very late 1972. This performance includes tracks from his first 5 albums, which, if the date is correct, suggests he was performing new material live well in advance of recording the songs. Most notably is the untitled song on CD2 (track 10) which is recognisable as the melody which surfaced as 'Prince Hal's Dirge' some 4 years later.

A rare chance to hear LW performing live with a band - who essentially went on to be the backing band on 'Recovery'


This is pretty killer. On the radio in support of album and soundtrack Strange Weirdos Loudon is as good as ever. Strange Weirdos is the soundtrack to Knocked Up (in which Loudon plays a gynecologist) and features the killer song "Daughter".....which you also get to hear here. This song will stick in your head for days. He's teamed up with Joe Henry here (whom he also teamed up with for the album) and the band is so damned good.....I mean there is some great instrumentation going on here. If you're not too familiar with Loudon, this is a great chance to check him out....you will dig him if you dig quirky folk music similar to John Prine or Todd Snider.
