Ya Tatchi & Majid Bekkas - African Jazz 'n Bar (2009)
mp3 VBR~212kbps | 71MB | 45:56 min.
This one is a bit different as it is a fusion album of sorts but the fusion is all-African, in which North Africa meets Sub-Shaharan Africa and melds/contrasts ideas.
Ya Tatchi is a trumpeter from the Republic of Congo and Majid Bekkas plays an Arabic bass instrument called the guembri and he is from Morocco. Providing a crucial third partner is Paul-Michel Amsallem, a pianist and sound engineer from France. It was recorded in Brazzaville, Abidjan and Rabat.
The music ranges wide with trumpet, guembri and sometimes what sounds like oud (probably Bekkas as well) well up in the mix, but there are also saxophone solos, a brass section, choppy guitar, the rolling rhythm African drummers can always summon up, some lush synth washes and even some vocal choruses.
It’s a very fresh mix which follows no cliched patterns but just keeps moving and developing, all with a smile on its face and a song in its heart.
