Smoke & Mirrors 1995


The presence of cello on some of the blues tunes adds a really nice and unique flavor. Check the superb "Me and My Chauffeur"

Smoke and Mirrors is a tribute album of sorts, though it is comprised primarily of Martin Simpson's original compositions. The record is dedicated to the memory of Big Joe Williams and, as explained in the liner notes, represents Simpson's own 30-year anniversary of playing the blues. The guitar playing is, naturally, exemplary, with Simpson's clear, bell-like acoustic tone thankfully at the forefront of the mix. Ex-Roomful of Blues guitarist Ronnie Earl guests on seven tracks and his contributions are uniformly tasty, his gently picked, eminently funky electric leads perfectly complimenting Simpson's more forceful steel string and Dobro playing. Not all of the material here is strictly blues, though all of it is blues-influenced. Several tunes belong to that hard to define mixed genre of blues, traditional British folk, pop, and world music pioneered by Richard Thompson, Bert Jansch, and John Renbourn. Unlike many virtuoso guitar players, Simpson possesses a strong and wonderfully expressive voice, which he uses here to excellent effect. His vocal style on the more straight-ahead blues tunes is classically British, at times recalling Jack Bruce at his best (the album even contains a fantastic eight-and-a-half-minute version of "Spoonful"). Overall, Smoke and Mirrors sounds like a real labor of love -- excellent music played with incredible technique, heart, and soul.

Sad or High Kicking (1985)



Empty that CD tray; clear your plate for some more prime cuts from the Scunthorpe, England steeler. Just two years after the ground-breaking GRINNING IN YOUR FACE, and in between tours accompanying June Tabor, Martin Simpson found himself with music in his fingers and time on his hands, and he spent it wisely.

His guitar tone is as clean and fresh as ever-in "Shawnee Town" it's like the strings are being pulled by grappling hooks rather than mere fingernails-and there's a fresh approach to almost every track. And while most of the material is from his adopted country (USA), there's a clear reminder of his roots; Anne Lister's "Icarus" is the centerpiece of the album, the vocal lines climbing like thermals over some unmistakable rolling riffs. He winds it up with a barnstorming full band version of "The Lakes of Pontchartrain" that would shake the cobwebs from any Louisiana outhouse. Through it all, Simpson doesn't once resort to studio tricks-it all goes to show why back in Scunthorpe they still talk about the time that a 14-year-old kid walked onto the stage, picked up his guitar and started to play.
