Norman Blake - Live at McCabes

    Year: 1976
    Label: Takoma

Long cherished by Norman Blake's fans as one of the greatest flatpicking albums of all time, Live at McCabe's isn't as essential as some of the guitarist's studio records of the time (see Whiskey Before Breakfast), but there's a warm, ramshackle beauty about this concert that is every bit as charming. Originally released on Takoma in 1976, it was out of print for years before an overwhelming fan petition prompted a reissue of the album in 1999. The sound is marvelous and, as one would expect, there's a ton of fine flatpicking here, as well as a rare chance to hear Blake live and in his prime. Joined by then-wife Nancy on three cuts, Blake switches to fiddle for a few tunes, including the lovely "Border Widow." His rendition of "Nine Pound Hammer" is one of the best on record, and equally great is a loose arrangement of "Arkansas Traveler" that finds a number of other half melodies and improvisations darting in and out. Some of these tunes turned up on previous and later studio albums; some he would never record again.

    Tracks:

    01 Introduction By Nancy Covey - :38
    02 Nine Pound Hammer - Travis - 4:07
    03 Sweet Heaven When I Die - Grant - 3:59
    04 Introducing Nancy Blake - 1:10
    05 Border Widow - Blake - 2:10
    06 "G" Medley: Green Leaf Fancy/Fields of November/Fort Smith - Blake, traditional - 5:35
07 Dry Grass on the High Fields - Blake - 2:35
    08 John Hardy - Traditional - 5:24
    09 Arkansas Traveler - Traditional - 2:26
    10 Medley: Bully of the Town/Bonaparte's Retreat/Richland Avenue Rag - traditional - 3:22
    11 Harvey's Reel - Blake - 2:00

Norman Blake - Whiskey Before Breakfast

    Release Date: 1976
    Label: Rounder
    Time: 34:47

Blake's best album, and one of the finest bluegrass albums of the '70s. "Church St. Blues" and "Slow Train Through Georgia" are great originals that demonstrate Blake's natural ease with a sung ballad, while the fabulous medleys "Sleepy Eyed Joe/Indian Creek" and "Fiddler's Dram/Whiskey Before Breakfast" show off the graceful flat-picking that made him famous. All told, there have been many albums in the folk idiom featuring many a guitar virtuoso, but very few achieve such a mix of relaxed subtlety and eye-popping virtuosity, and Whiskey Before Breakfast will perhaps stand as the greatest achievement by this master picker.

    Tracks:

01 Hand Me Down My Walking Cane - 3:28
    02 Under the Double Eagle - Traditional - 2:44
    03 Six White Horses - Traditional - 5:00
    04 Salt River - 1:39
    05 Old Grey Mine - Traditional - 3:31

    Norman Blake - Blackberry Blossom

    Release Date: 1977
    Label: Flying Fish

Norman Blake had barely begun his solo career in 1977 when he recorded Blackberry Blossom. This album finds Blake's artistry already fully developed, with the material divided between traditional songs and instrumentals. All nine cuts feature Blake's nifty guitar and mandolin work, with occasional back up from Nancy Blake on cello. The album gets started with a Tin Pan Alley tune, "Are You From Dixie?," an upbeat song that plays off the motif of the lonely Southerner away from his homeland and longing for a friendly face. On the oddly titled "The Rights of Man Hornpipe" Blake is backed by Nancy Blake on cello, creating something akin to flatpicking baroque. When the cello is combined with the fiddle on "D Medley," the sound comes much closer to a medium-paced Appalachian jig. The original "Lonesome Jenny" fits comfortably with the album's traditional material, drawing a portrait of the empty life of a woman who has been left a widow. This seven-minute portrait is filled with fascinating chord changes and tender lyrics. All of the songs on Blackberry Blossom are delivered in Blake's straightforward manner, both down-to-earth and emotive. It is perhaps easy to take an artist as uncomplicated as Blake for granted: he never seems to be going out of his way to impress the listener with fancy guitar licks or vocal hysterics. Instead, he imbeds himself in tradition, offering honest interpretations and fresh originals that are respectful of their roots. In this way, his true artistry grows each time the listener places a disc like Blackberry Blossom in the CD player. To those familiar with Blake, this re-issue will be warmly welcomed; for the unfamiliar, Blackberry Blossom is a great place to get started.

    Tracks:

01 Are You from Dixie - Cobb, Yellen - 3:40
02 The Rights Of Man Hornpipe - 2:35
    03 The Highland Light - Blake - 5:16
    04 Railroad Blues - Traditional - 8:02
    05 Foggy Valley - Traditional - 2:31
    06 Lonesome Jenny - Blake - 7:21
    07 Blackberry Blossom - Traditional - 3:33
    08 D Medley - Traditional - 5:26
    09 Jerusalem Ridge - Monroe - 3:46

Norman Blake & The Rising Fawn String Ensemble - Full Moon on the Farm

    Release Date: 1981
    Label: Rounder

    Review by Chip Renner
This album features Norman Blake and the Rising Fawn String Ensemble -- James Bryan, Charlie Collins, and Nancy Blake. It has a nice, well-rounded feeling.

Norman lends his agile touch to mandolin, fiddle, and guitar on the Rising Fawn String Ensemble's second album, which is, overall, more upbeat in feel than the band's more stately debut. Except for the Carter Family's "Diamonds in the Rough," the album is all instrumental, and includes many Norman Blake originals.

Norman & Nancy Blake - Blind Dog

    Release Date: 1988
    Recording Date: Sep 1987
    Label: Rounder
    Time: 40:17

    Review by Jason Ankeny

Blind Dog is a fine summation of bluegrass guitarist's Norman Blake's career and aesthetics, a largely- instrumental collection of favorites from his own catalog as well as from his influences'. The covers include songs by A.P. Carter and Woody Guthrie, while Blake dips into his own back pages to re-do fan-favorite "Billy Gray." The focus of the record, however, is Blake's playing; a tasteful, economical picker, he shadows the melodies to allow the songs to speak for themselves.

    Tracks:

    01 Little Stream of Whiskey - Traditional - 3:29
    02 Grand Coulee Dam - Guthrie - 3:43
03 Prettiest Little Girl in the Country - Traditional - 2:19

Norman & Nancy Blake - While Passing Along This Way

    Release Date: 1994
    Label: Shanachie

Following his highly prolific relationship with Rounder Records, multi-instrumentalist Norman Blake found an equally congenial home for his music at Shanachie. The first fruits of this new partnership were four collaborative albums with his wife, Nancy, all of which earned the duo Grammy nominations for Best Traditional Folk Album. A pair of folk music faithfuls, Norman and Nancy Blake balance the traditional material they love with original compositions in the old-timey vein on While Passing Along This Way. The Blakes cover a wide spectrum of traditional styles and themes from "He's Passing This Way," a hymn that recalls the Stanley Brothers and "Sweet Freedom" with its echoes of the Carter Family, to the bluegrass-tinged "Sweet Heaven" and the fiddle showcase "Old Mother Flanagan." Nancy Blake's harmony work and acoustic guitar playing mesh expertly with her husband's. For the most part her voice remains well in the background, but it's plainly obvious, listening to material like "The Grave of Bonaparte" and "Old Stepstone," how much it is enriching this music. The couple's two guitars sound like one instrument on the graceful, finger-picked instrumental medley "Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine/Going Down the Valley." Adept at a number of string instruments, Norman Blake sticks largely to guitar, though he's also in fine form on fiddle, dobro, and mandolin. These are expert musicians who, through their loyalty to this rich tradition, have done a great deal to keep its spirit alive.

Norman & Nancy Blake - The Hobo's Last Ride

    Release Date: Aug 20, 1996
    Label: Shanachie
    Time: 65:46

This fine collection of tunes proves once again that no one can breathe life into a traditional number like the Blakes. Besides masterfully handling just about anything with strings, Norman and Nancy Blake's weathered vocals blend beautifully and are perfectly set in these obscure chestnuts. For a real wake-up call, listen to the chilling "Starving to Death on the Government Claim," a cry for help from the little guy. This disc is proof that some things never change, especially good songs.

    Tracks:

01 The Democratic Donkey (Is in His Stall Again) - 3:30

Norman Blake - Chattanooga Sugar Babe

    Release Date: Jan 20, 1998
    Recording Date: Oct 9, 1996-Oct 11, 1996
    Label: Shanachie

Few musicians can breathe life into traditional tunes with the authenticity of Norman Blake, and even fewer can pen original songs that have the same timeless qualities as songs written 100 years ago. This is another fine collection by the master of American song. Indeed, Blake exudes an element of pure Americanism that spares us overt nationalism. And he's one hell of a picker, too.

    Tracks:

01 The Rescue from Moose River Goldmine - Traditional - 3:53
02 The Weathered Old Caboose Behind the Train - Blake - 4:13
03 Ol' Bill Miner (The Gentleman Bandit) - Blake - 5:56
    04 Poor Old Dad - Traditional - 3:01
    05 Chattanooga Sugar Babe - Blake - 6:00
06 Platonia, the Pride of the Plains - Traditional - 5:13
    07 Dr. Edmundo's Favorite Portuguese Waltz - Blake - 4:37

    Norman Blake - Old Ties

    Year: 2002
    Label: Rounder

    Rounder Description:
Norman Blake won many new fans through his two songs on the soundtrack to the film, O Brother, Where Art Thou? Yet, the master guitarist from Rising Fawn, Georgia has a history that reaches back to his years as a sideman with Johnny Cash, and as a player on Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Will The Circle Be Unbroken. As Jon Weisberger writes in the enclosed notes, "He has been hailed as one of the giants of acoustic guitar playing, yet that reputation rests not on a discovery of new techniques or jaw-dropping complexity, but on a profoundly rare ability to tap the innermost essence of a song, and to create a place for a lasting appreciation and enjoyment of its beauty. Virtuosos have come and gone, but Norman Blake remains." Old Ties includes many of the finest old-time oriented performances from Blake's numerous Rounder albums.

    AMG 5*
    Review by Zac Johnson
Norman Blake will never be known as a revolutionary. His starkly honest guitar picking and gently lulling voice have sounded almost exactly the same for the 30-some years that the Rounder release Old Ties encompasses. Often performing solo, occasionally accompanied by his wife, Nancy, and any of a number of bluegrass and neo-traditional folk musicians (Tut Taylor, Charlie Collins, Doc Watson), Blake's summery, porch-swing ballads and blues are perfectly performed and humbly executed. Working with the traditional themes of old-timey folk music, Blake re-creates the earthy feel of a timeworn classic the first time a song emerges from his guitar, and his unpretentious, reverent style delivers the music in an intimate environment. The compilation sticks to his more traditional-sounding compositions and interpretations, making for a wonderful afternoon listen and the perfect introduction to Blake's uniquely faithful style. Although his musical offerings may never be seen as revolutionary, his unwillingness to change to a more contemporary mode of folk music may be a kind of revolution...if anyone wanted to argue about it. Luckily, with music this pure, no one does.

Norman & Nancy Blake - The Morning Glory Ramblers

    Release Date: Apr 20, 2004
    Recording Date: Aug 3, 2003-Aug 7, 2003
    Label: Dualtone

It's hard to believe that Morning Glory Ramblers is the first full-length recording by Norman and Nancy Blake in eight years. Certainly they've been active, from playing on all 47 Down From the Mountain dates, performing on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Cold Mountain soundtracks, June Carter Cash's final album, Wildwood Flower, and various other projects. This album, recorded on the soundstage of the Western Jubilee Warehouse in Colorado Springs, is a dynamite setting for the material found here. There are 17 songs in this collection, seven of them traditional melodies, still others so old they've seldom been heard over the last century, a Hank Williams' tune, and a couple by friends of Norman and Nancy's that are so saturated in the deep country, they could have been written decades before. The set opens with "Sunny Side of Life," one of two songs closely associated with the Carter Family. The strident, two-part harmony and dual guitars are the perfect opener for an album that is arresting for its immediacy and its strident honoring of tradition. That said, these songs aren't nostalgic; they are part of a living, breathing tradition that informs as it delights. The other Carter-linked number, "When the Roses Bloom in Dixieland," written by George Evans in 1913, is the strongest thing here; its lyric rambles and shimmers, floating through the woven guitars. Norman and Nancy's voices are so closely aligned, without artifice or affect, that emotion just drips form the verses. One of the album's centerpieces is "I Loved You Better Than You Knew," by Johnny Carroll (not the rockabilly legend; this was written in 1918). Its melodic architecture evokes both Celtic balladry and the mountain music of Southern Appalachia. Also in the middle of the record is "The Wayworn Traveler," by John Matthias from 1836, an American gospel tune that is well-known as "Palms of Victory." Of the modern songs, Laurie Lewis' bluegrass gospel number, "Dry Bones," is the standout. The album closes with an obscurity by Hank Williams called "Men With Broken Hearts." Its verse is narrated by Nancy, however, adding an entirely new meaning to the lyric. This record drips with integrity, with genius, and with soul. Norman and Nancy may consider this only the latest chapter in their vocational legacy, but it stands out, far away from other recordings that attempt to do the same thing. The reason is simple: Norman and Nancy perform these tunes as unfinished legacies, as bricks in a road that has come from the winding hills of time and into the modern era, but continue to who knows when and where, and as such, are still revealing their meanings to both layers and listeners. This is a must-have for those interested in the poetry at the heart of American roots music.
