Pete Molinari - A Train Bound for Glory (2010)

Medway, at the arse end of the Thames gateway is full of young’uns misspending their youth, usually with the help of graffiti, lighter fuel and underage sex; Pete Molinari’s formative years appears to have involved being captivated by and immersed in the full country rock-n-roll archive.
It’s some journey from Kent to Nashville; it’s a journey through time and space to make a record that encompasses a whole load of the twists and turns of 50s and early 60s rock. ‘A Train Bound for Glory’ is Pete Molinari’s 3rd album; recorded in Nashville with support (as on his recent ep) from one time Presley stalwarts The Jordanaires (here most movingly on ‘Since You’ve Been Gone), as well as steel player Chris Scruggs. It’s eclectic, dirty and sometimes wild. In some teenage dancehall, the boys would go crazy for the classic rock n roll of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, whilst later the girls would dream it was their heart-breaking story on ‘Minus Me’, whilst a lonely housewife might sway round the kitchen to ‘A Place I know so Well’.
The swampy, chugging blues of ‘New York City’ is followed by an altogether dirtier groove in ‘A Train Bound for Glory’. There are not many artists who could cover the range of influences so convincingly – Ryan Adams might have managed ‘Willow Weep for Me’, but could never have got the subtlety and timelessness of the tex mex ‘For Eliza’. For all its historical conviction, it remains an outsider’s take; the product of adoration and immersion, not imitation. It’s fantastic.
