Rodney Crowell - The Houston Kid
Consider this an album-length sequel to "Ain't Livin' Long Like This," the autobiographical anthem that established Rodney Crowell at the songwriting vanguard of mid-'70s Nashville. Though his career has seen more misfires than hits in recent years, his music here returns to its purest, strongest impulses. Whether he's taking creative leaps beyond the facts of his life ("The Rock of My Soul," "I Wish It Would Rain") or operating within a more transparently confessional mode ("Why Don't We Talk About It," "I Know Love Is All I Need"), the results ring redemptively true. The album's centerpiece is a duet with Johnny Cash on "I Walk the Line (Revisited)," as Crowell puts his imprint on one of his former father-in-law's signature tunes. With echoes of some formative influences--from Sun rockabilly and Houston honky-tonk to Buddy Holly and the Byrds--Crowell's music provides buoyant complement to the plainspoken testament of the lyrics. --Don McLeese

Rodney Crowell - Ain't Living Long Like This (1978)[FLAC+320]
Ain't Living Long Like This is the title of the debut album of American country music artist Rodney Crowell. It was released in 1978 (see 1978 in country music) by Warner Bros. Records. It failed to chart on the Top Country Albums chart. The songs, "Elvira", "Baby Better Start Turnin' 'Em Down" and "(Now and Then, There's) A Fool Such as I" were released as singles but they all failed to chart within the top 40. Despite this, Ain't Living Long Like This is considered one Crowell's best and most influential albums. Brett Hartenbach of Allmusic says it "not only showcases his songwriting prowess, but also his ability to deliver a song, whether it's one of his own or the work of another writer". Most of the songs on this album would later be covered by other artists including The Oak Ridge Boys and Alan Jackson.
Three of the tracks are cover songs:
"Elvira" - Dallas Frazier, Elvira (1966)
"(Now and Then, There's) A Fool Such as I" - Eddy Arnold, American Institution (1954) [Covered by many other artists such as, Elvis Presley, Hank Snow, Jim Reeves and Lou Rawls]
"I Thought I Heard You Callin' My Name" - Norma Jean, Let's Go All the Way (1965)
Many Crowell-penned songs have since been covered by other artists. "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight" was first covered by Emylou Harris in 1978 then a year later by The Oak Ridge Boys from The Oak Ridge Boys Have Arrived. They released it as a single and reached Number One with it.
"I Ain't Living Long Like This" was recorded in 1978 by Emmylou Harris for her album, Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town and in 1979 by Waylon Jennings for his album What Goes Around Comes Around. Brooks & Dunn recorded a version in 2003 as a tribute to Waylon. Gary Stewart and Jerry Jeff Walker would also cover the song in the 1970's. Andy Griggs recorded a version for his 1999 debut album, You Won't Ever Be Lonely.
"Baby, Better Start Turnin' 'Em Down" would also be covered by Emmylou Harris on her 1983 album Shoes and by Rosanne Cash on her 1979 album Right or Wrong. "Song for the Life" was first covered in 1980 by John Denver and in 1982 by Waylon Jennings. Alan Jackson released his version as a single from his album Who I Am in 1994 where it became a top ten hit.
Willie Nelson, Ricky Skaggs, Emmylou Harris and Nicolette Larson sang background vocals on several of the tracks.

Rodney Crowell - But What Will The Neighbors Think (1980)[FLAC+320]
A well-known country songwriter that got his start as Emmylou Harris' guitarist, Rodney Crowell had his first hits with the songs "Elvira" and "(Now and Then There's) A Fool Such as I." But What Will the Neighbors Think was Crowell's second album, and spawned the charting single "Ashes by Now."
Influenced by co-producer Craig Leon (Blondie, the Ramones), it took a distinctly more rock "feel" than his country-rock debut album (1978's Ain't Living Long Like This).
The song "Queen of Hearts" was first recorded in 1979 by Welsh rock musician Dave Edmunds for his album Repeat When Necessary.
Most of the songs on this album would later be covered by other country artists. "Ain't No Money" was covered in 1982 by Crowell's then wife, Rosanne Cash on her album, Somewhere in the Stars.
"It's Only Rock & Roll" was covered in 1983 by both Emmylou Harris and Waylon Jennings on their respective albums White Shoes and It's Only Rock & Roll.
"On a Real Good Night" was written by Crowell but was first recorded by Bobby Bare for his 1978 album Sleep Wherever I Fall. Albert Lee, who played guitar for this album, performed the song on his 1979 album Hiding.
Emmylou Harris also covered "Ashes By Now" on her 1981 album Evangeline. It is also featured on Lee Ann Womack's album I Hope You Dance.
Guy Clark would later record his own version of "Heartbroke", which he wrote, on his 1981 album South Coast of Texas. In 1982 George Strait would record a version on his second album Strait From The Heart.

Rodney Crowell - Rodney Crowell (1981)[FLAC+320]
Rodney Crowell is the title of the third, eponymous studio album by American country music artist Rodney Crowell. It was released in 1981 (see 1981 in country music) by Warner Bros. Records and was his last album on that label before switching to Columbia. It was the first album Crowell produced by himself. It reached #47 on the Top Country Albums chart and #105 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The songs, "Stars on the Water" and "Victim or a Fool" were released as singles. "Stars on the Water" reached #30 on the Hot Country Songs chart. His highest charting song up to that point. It peaked at #21 on the Canadian country charts. "Victim or a Fool" reached #34 in the U.S..
"She Ain't Goin' Nowhere" was written and recorded by Guy Clark in 1975 for his debut album Old No. 1. Later versions of the song change the "Goin'" to "going".
"Old Pipeliner" was first recorded in 1967 by Red Sovine on his album Dear John Letter.
The opening track, "Stars on the Water" was first covered in 1983 by Jimmy Buffett on his album One Particular Harbour. George Strait included a cover on his album The Road Less Traveled in 2001.
"Shame on the Moon" was covered in 1982 by Mac Davis and Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band. The latter released as a single from their album The Distance where it became a #2 hit. Tanya Tucker also covered the song in 1983 for her album Changes.
"'Til I Gain Control Again" became a number 1 hit for Crystal Gayle in late 1982. guitarist Albert Lee would record a version in 2002 for his album Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes.

Rodney Crowell - Sex and Gasoline [FLAC]
Americana literati Rodney Crowell continues down the path blazed by his previous three records with ''Sex & Gasoline''. Crowell bounded onto the music landscape in 1988 with the Top 40 crossover album ''Diamonds and Dirt'', which produced an astonishing five number one singles and a Grammy Award for the single 'After All This Time.' As part of Emmylou Harris' original Hot Band, Crowell's musical pedigree is unquestionable, at one time even earning him the right to remake Johnny Cash's singular 'Ring of Fire' with Cash himself singing Rodney's reworked melody. With his new album ''Sex &
Gasoline'', he continues to write about contemporary themes. ''Sex & Gasoline'' was produced by Joe Henry and contains what Crowell says are, ''some of the best performances I've given to date.'' For the new material Crowell and Henry brought in some of music's most skilled sidemen including
Doyle Bramhall II (acoustic and electric guitar), Greg Leisz (acoustic and electric guitar, pedal and lap steel, mandolin, mandocello and dobro), Patrick Warren (piano, pump organ and Chamberlin), David Piltch (upright and electric bass) and Jay Bellerose (drums and percussion).
How many male singer-songwriters have the guts to write, "If I could have just one wish/Maybe for an hour/I'd want to be a woman/And feel that phantom power"? That's what Rodney Crowell does in "The Rise and Fall of Intelligent Design," one of a number of captivating, autobiographical songs on Sex & Gasoline, all of which were inspired by women. If the cartoonish cover photo suggests that females frighten him, the songs bear out an opposite truth, as the album explores--and at times nearly worships--feminine strength. In what nearly amounts to an audio diary, he tracks intimate moments with his wife, daughters, friends, and the women he observes from afar (including a screen goddess in "Moving Work of Art"). Though the lyrical tone ranges from biting and Dylanesque (the title song, about the objectification of women in advertising and the media) to tender and confessional ("Forty Winters"), more often than not, Crowell finds empathy with his subjects, his aching tenor taking on a mellow resolve. (Producer Joe Henry keeps the backing sparse and uncluttered.) Returning from a six-year hiatus in 2001, Crowell pushes himself harder each time out, making his transition from Top 40 hitmaker to Americana god, a rich and powerful journey with no end in sight. -– Alanna Nash

Rodney Crowell - Fate's Right Hand (2003)[FLAC+mp3]
Fate's Right Hand finds Rodney Crowell eschewing the hands-on autobiographical narratives of The Houston Kid (one of his best ever) for songs about less concrete, but no less essential, concerns. As the self-helpers might say, this is an album about growth, about knowing the difference between what you can change and what you can't. It's about facing your mistakes--or wishing you wanted to anyway (on "The Man in Me")--and it includes a recitation about meditation ("Time to Go Inward") and a rousing anthem about wanting to stick around, problems and all ("Earthbound"). Crowell seems to be in a particularly introspective version of the middle-age crazies, one as brave as it is obvious in its pop-psych references to Jesus and Buddha (and Minnie Pearl, too). So Crowell may likely be "Preachin' to the Choir"--if you ain't ready to look inward, you may find Fate a tad cloying. Then again, the jangling riffs, irresistible choruses, funny rhymes, and supple pop and country-rock rhythms are for everyone. -- David Cantwell
