Sam Baker - Pretty World (2007)
Genre: Folk | MP3 320 kbps | 90.5 MB | 41:13
“Sam Baker is one of the most unlikely singers ever recorded. His vocals, more spoken than sung, make musicians like Bob Dylan and Tom Waits sound lyrical and melodic. However that's not always a bad thing. His voice never gets in the way of the music or the story he's telling. Add the sound of his voice to his singular odd pronunciation and you have a very original artist, an artist who does his work caressing songs with his mind while scraping them with his voice. The combination is genius, honest, compelling and beautiful. The truth is Sam Baker is in a class by himself. His music is simple and rather amazing. Each song on the disc makes you not only anticipate the next one, but also nostalgic for the one that came before. On the inside cover of Baker's latest CD, Pretty World, are the words "how beautiful are these days." It sets the mood perfectly as Baker and his band set off to create a series of sound-scapes that range from simple folk acoustic to eerie classic country. There isn't a single bad tune on the album and all live up to that simple saying. It's hard to say Baker is a musical force because everything he does is understated, which is what makes his music so inherently strong. Hardly anyone else is doing what he does and probably no one else should. Baker has locked up his odd little corner of the music world and Pretty World is a really good sophomore release.”
