Tinariwen (Tamashek: "empty places") is a musical band formed in 1982 in Muammar al-Gaddafi's camps of Tuareg rebels. They play in the Tishoumaren ("music of the unemployed") style, and sing mostly in the French and Tamashek languages. Their songs mostly cover the subject of independence for their people from the government of Mali. They are said to be the first Tuareg band to use electric guitars. -Wikipedia
Amassakoul (2004)
A polished album from the leading Touareg desert blues band, dominated by distinctively gentle rocking rhythms, call and response vocals, gnarled but simple guitar lines, ululations and handclaps.

A lot has happened since Tinariwen played their first ever UK concert at WOMAD in the summer of 2001. The Festival in the Desert, which they helped to create, has become an annual event of international repute. They have released two acclaimed albums, 'The Radio Tisdas Sessions' and this year's 'Amassakoul'. Both have reaped a bumper crop of rave reviews and eager praise.
This year the band have hardly set foot in their desert hometown of Kidal in northeastern Mali, a burg which feels like a strange outpost built of adobe lost in landscape that could rival the dark side of the moon for it's harsh, epic and lonely grandeur. Tours and gigs in the UK, France, Australia, Holland, Sweden and, later this year, the USA keep them moving, like their ancestors who roamed the parts of the southern Sahara in search of fresh pasture for their herds of camels, goats and cattle. This modern musical nomadism is turning Tinariwen into a wickedly effective live unit, capable of rousing the most contrary audience and bringing it to boiling point. But the soul of the music, which was forged during those long harsh years of exile in Libya and Algeria, as well as that thankfully brief nightmare of conflict and rebellion, remains the same.

Legendary poet guitarists and soul rebels Tinariwen release their long-awaited follow up to the award-winning 'Aman Iman' CD. 'IMIDIWAN: Companions' is a return to the source. The album was recorded last winter in the depths of the southern Sahara desert by engineer / producer Jean-Paul Romann. It features thirteen songs composed and sung by Ibrahim 'Abaraybone', Hassan 'Le Lion', Abdallah 'Catastrophe', Mohammed 'Japonais' and Abdallah 'Intidao'. The themes are as powerful as ever; homesickness, loss, the struggle for freedom and love of the desert. The mood is vintage Tinariwen; defiant, fragile, raw and uncompromisingly real. 'IMIDIWAN' is reaffirms Tinariwen's global status as one of the most popular and significant groups ever to have come out of West Africa. The CD is accompanied by a DVD of a short film shot on location in the Sahara by French film maker Jessy Nottola.
