Väsen (VEH-sen) is an acoustic trio which features an instrument unique to Sweden called the nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) along with viola and guitar. Väsen plays heavenly music based in the rural Swedish tradition with a contemporary flavor.
This is acoustic ensemble playing at its best, with sounds that can connote classical string quartets at one moment and upbeat folk/pop another. "Spirit" (one of the English translations of Väsen, which also include essence, being, nature, character, noise, sounds, fuss, ado, alien, and soul) compiles the band's work to date, from two Swedish and one French studio album, a live album, and 5 previously unreleased tracks (including one which features the trio imitating pigs in heat)

The key to the sound of this band is still in the nykleharpa, a keyed drone fiddle that Johansson is an acknowledged master of. It is this instrument that adds the mystery to the music, and his dark, rolling "Tärtulingen" exemplifies what Väsen is all about, a merging of times and styles that is singularly Swedish and uniquely their own

Live at the Nordic Roots Festival


Väsen has developed into possibly the most delightful and accomplished acoustic group to emerge from Sweden.
Since they became a quartet with the addition of magical percussionist André Ferrari, they've progressed by leaps and bounds, able, it seems, to play anything with a touch of brilliance. But their concerts have long been a thing apart, imbued with heavy touches of humor to go with the virtuosity, and that's captured here.
In guitarist Roger Tallroth, who keeps very much in the background, they have one of the stalwarts of Nordic music, while nyckelharpa player Olov Johansson has proved to be a leading light of his instrument, with an ideal foil in violist Mikael Marin.
Whether exploring the possibilities of a jazz-folk fusion on "Shapons Vindaloo" or sharing the stage with artists like Harv ("Polska After Mats Berglund/Sold or Sale") or Norwegian Annbjørg Lien ("The Phantom"), there's a marvelous sparkle to every phrase and note, and always a sense that the music could go anywhere — which it frequently does. It's not just folk music anymore.

On this CD we get to meet one of Sweden's top folk music bands on stage. This album was recorded at a concert in Västerås in 1995, and gives a good idea of what a concert with Väsen is like. Here they prove that they are not only one of the best Swedish folk music bands, but also one of the best live bands. One gets to hear not only their masterly playing, but also the improvisation which is a natural element of their concerts, and their wit when presentating tunes. They have a presence on stage which makes the audience feel they are part of what's happening
