'til we outnumber 'em - The Songs of Woody Guthrie

More than 30 years ago, shortly after the death of Woody Guthrie in the fall of 1967, a number of folk heavies like Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger assembled in Carnegie Hall to pay tribute to the folk patriarch. That Tribute to Woody Guthrie serves as something of a precursor to this 2000 record spearheaded by Ani DiFranco, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Guthrie Archives. It is a testimony to the incredible staying power of Guthrie's songs and his legacy that successive generations of musicians continue to be touched by what DiFranco calls his "rail-riding, rambling, story-gathering, political, acoustic-balladeer model." Like the first tribute, this one includes readings of Guthrie's prose along with interpretations of his music, but it also adds personal reflections from Fred Hellerman and Arlo Guthrie, among others. Highlights from this 1996 gathering include a pair of Bruce Springsteen performances (the playful "Riding in My Car" and the solemn "Deportee"), David Pirner's urgent "Pretty Boy Floyd," and "Ramblin' Round," invested with the right amount of weariness by the Indigo Girls with DiFranco. Also of note is DiFranco's dramatic reworking of "Do Re Mi," which highlights the song's often overlooked dark theme, and Billy Bragg's "Against the Law," which reappears on Mermaid Avenue Volume II, a second set of Guthrie lyrics set to Bragg's music. It's telling that Arlo Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, two participants from the first tribute, return here, and it's more than likely that many of these artists will appear on the future Guthrie celebrations that surely are to come. --Marc Greilsamer

Woody Guthrie - My Dusty Road

    Releases information
There are umpteen collections of the music of legendary folkie storyteller, agitator and Dylan role model Woody Guthrie, and almost all of them sound like they were recorded in a refrigerator box. But this one qualifies as genuine news. The back story is a crate-digger's wet dream: cardboard drums filled with pristine 78-rpm metal masters, given up for lost long ago, were found in the basement storage bin of a Brooklyn apartment belonging to an Italian lady who inherited them from the daughter-in-law of a business partner of Folkways Records guru Moses Asch.

The 54 songs on My Dusty Road, most of them familiar, are part of roughly 250 tracks — many featuring second guitarist Cisco Houston and harmonica man Sonny Terry — recorded over a six-day marathon in New York in 1944, during the thick of World War II. The sound quality is astonishing. On songs such as "This Land Is Your Land," "Stackolee" and "Pretty Boy Floyd," fingerpicked melodic fills emerge from surface noise, vocals step up to shake your hand. It's the sound of Guthrie as a man, not a ghost. In addition to extravagant packaging (four discs and a couple of archival postcard repros in a hobo-style cardboard valise), there are a half-dozen unreleased tracks. The most impressive are "Tear the Fascists Down," a no-shit bit of wartime cheerleading, and "Bad Repetation" [sic], a nudge-winker about romantic problems — one of the occupational hazards for a trouble-courting troubadour never afraid to sing exactly what was on his mind

Is there such a thing as required listening in popular music? And is it possible that the music of a man who single handedly changed the course of pop culture with his songs can come alive again with a clarity and sound that feels like it was recorded TODAY? One cannot say enough about Woody Guthrie and his position in the world of great American music. I intend to invite my friend Bobby D over to review some of these songs for that there radio show he does. And then there's my seven year old son, a railroad song fanatic beyond reproach. He needs a track or two. Folkies? Welcome. Country? Thank you. Alt. ditto. A great man named Gram Parsons once set out on a quest to build on the tradition of Cosmic American Music. The songs and voice of Woody, especially as witnessed on this (slightly too preciously packaged but what the heck) boxed set is a key ingredient to that journey.

    Disc One: Woody’s “Greatest” Hits
    Disc 1 (Rounder)

All the songs on these four discs were recorded on April 16, 19, 20, 24, and 25, 1944, plus an unreported later date that month, in the cramped New York City studio of Asch Records. Woody Guthrie and Cisco Houston were between merchant marine voyages; their friend, blind Sonny Terry, was living on a meager Social Security check and what he could pick up playing harmonica around town. Over those five days, they recorded approximately 250 tracks, some songs with multiple takes. Those discs were apparently divided equally between partners Moe Asch and Herbert Harris, when they dissolved the company. Asch would make extensive use of his 125 tracks when he launched Folkways Records. Harris later issued a handful of his cache on his Stinson label.

    12. My Daddy

    Disc Two: Woody’s Roots
    Disc 2 (Rounder)

In the face of so many, many songs and ballads Guthrie wrote – estimates range from 1200 to 1500 and higher – it is easy to forget that he was also a folk singer, that he learned traditional songs aurally most of his life. Steeped in the so-called “roots music” of the Southwest, Guthrie infused those qualities in much of what he wrote later, and thus assured the success of songs such as those on Disc I.

Guthrie learned some songs and stories from his mother, from Uncle Jeff Guthrie, from his father who regularly sang in the church choir, from the man who shined shoes at Jigg’s barbershop in Pampa. Later he picked up fiddle tunes from his best friend, Matt Jennings, and from the pickup square dance bands he played with around Pampa and Amarillo, Texas. He learned songs from 78 rpm records and over the radio, many of them traditional songs reworked, if at all, to secure a copyright, songs by the Carter Family, by Vernon Dalhart, by Fiddlin’ John Carson, and half a hundred others. He learned songs from traveling medicine shows and touring country bands. All of these he fused in a style uniquely his own. As a youngster in Okemah, Oklahoma, a young man in Pampa, Texas, even as an adult playing with his good friend Huddie Ledbetter in New York City or listening to Library of Congress field records at Alan Lomax’s insistence in Washington, Guthrie absorbed an uniquely American tradition.

    Disc Three: Woody the Agitator
    Disc 3 (Rounder)

In New York City, Guthrie fell in, or was snatched up by The Almanac Singers, an ever-shifting amalgamation of pro-Union, anti-Jim Crow singers. The central figures were a lanky five-string banjo player, Pete Seeger; a portly, folksy Arkansan who sang bass, Lee Hays; and Millard Lampell, a facile and clever songwriter who tended to sing the melody line. For the last ten years, they had seen “oppressed people and therefore oppressors,” as Hays argued; now they lifted their voices in protest and defiance.

Disc Four: Woody, Cisco and Sonny Jam the Blues, Hollers, and Dances
    Disc 4 (Rounder)

After their second voyage in the merchant marine, Guthrie persuaded Moses Asch to record as many songs as he could get down on the scarce aluminum masters. Asch was taking a big gamble based on a hunch; Guthrie was important as a songwriter, and Guthrie would sell enough records to make the gamble worthwhile.

Guthrie, being Guthrie, offhandedly invited his shipmate, Gilbert “Cisco” Houston, and Sanders “Blind Sonny” Terry to join him in what would be an impromptu jam session in the Asch studio during the last weeks of April, 1944. On many tracks, Terry, a true virtuoso on the harmonica, shone brightly. As Guthrie later wrote:

Sonny Terry blew and whipped, beat, fanned and petted his harmonica, cooed to it like a weed hill turtle dove, cried to it like some worried woman come to ease his worried mind…. He put the tobacco sheds of North and South Carolina in it and all of the blistered and hurt and hardened hands cheated and left empty, hurt and left crying, robbed and left hungry, pilfered and left starving, beaten and left dreaming. He rolled down the trains that the colored cannot drive, only clean and wash down. He blew into the wood holes and the brassy reeds the tale and the wails of Lost John running away from the dogs of the chain gang guards, and the chain gang is the landlord that is never around anywhere. (American Folksong [New York: Oak Publications, 1961], p. 7.)

A disk with a variety of Woody Guthrie songs. It is full of fabulous stuff, but unfortunately I didn’t have any kind of information about it. I tried to input the setlist as best I could before I uploaded it but some songs are mislabeled. A little more digging and I think I have all the proper notations now, but again the MP3s are mislabeled. Sorry about that.

Its a brilliant set though. Some of the best Woody stuff I’ve ever heard. There’s lots of additional players as well including Pete Seeger. And its all just tons of fun to listen to.

*From Guy Logsdon’s Discography, reprinted in Santelli, Robert & Davidson, Emily (eds.),
Hard Travelin’ — The Life and Legacy of Woody Guthrie, Hanover and London, 1999, p. 196:

“7 JULY 1944. Woody was a Merchant Marine, “washing dishes on a Liberty Ship,” the troop ship Sea Porpoise which carried troops to the Normandy beach in early July 1944. After the troops were sent ashore, the ship hit a mine but made its way back to England; Woody was routed through London toward Glasgow, Scotland, toward the United States. On a song manuscript dated “July 13th, 1944″, Woody wrote, “this train is carrying me outside from London now; on up towards Belfast, and Glasgow.”

While in London, he went to the offices of the BBC where he introduced himself as a member of The Martins and the Coys [produced by Alan Lomax for the BBC in late March 1944, broadcast by the BBC on 26 June 1944] and was given the opportunity to sing on the Children’s Hour. After an autobiographical statement, he was recorded singing with his guitar accompaniment two railroad songs.

900 Miles is the minor-key melody that Cisco made popular.

**New York City, CBS Radio Forecast Series #10: This series was an attempt to try out new radio ideas; each program was
an introduction to a proposed new radio series. Hosted by Clifton Fadiman, written by Alan Lomax and Nicholas Ray,
featuring Woody Guthrie, The Golden Gate Quartet, Len Doyle, Burl Ives, Josh White and Willie Johnson

    Woody Guthrie - Troubadour

Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie (July 14, 1912 – October 3, 1967) is best known as an American singer-songwriter and folk musician, whose musical legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional and children's songs, ballads and improvised works. He frequently performed with the slogan This Machine Kills Fascists displayed on his guitar. His best-known song is "This Land Is Your Land", which is regularly sung in American schools. Many of his recorded songs are archived in the Library of Congress. Such songwriters as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton have acknowledged their debt to Guthrie as an influence.
Guthrie traveled with migrant workers from Oklahoma to California and learned traditional folk and blues songs. Many of his songs are about his experiences in the Dust Bowl era during the Great Depression, earning him the nickname the "Dust Bowl Troubadour". Throughout his life Guthrie was associated with United States communist groups, though he was never an actual member of any.
Guthrie was married three times and fathered eight children, including American folk musician Arlo Guthrie. He is the grandfather of musician Sarah Lee Guthrie. Guthrie died from complications of Huntington's disease, a progressive genetic neurological disorder. During his later years, in spite of his illness, Guthrie served as a figurehead in the folk movement, providing inspiration to a generation of new folk musicians, including mentor relationships with Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Bob Dylan.

Woody Guthrie was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 1997.

Woody Guthrie - Library Of Congress Recordings, Vols. 1-3 CD

Made by Alan Lomax over a three day period in 1940, LIBRARY OF CONGRESS RECORDINGS includes many of Woody Guthrie's best-loved songs, coupled with his commentary and observations of America in the 30's.

Throughout the '30s and '40s, folklorist and historian Alan Lomax traveled the country seeking out traditional folk and blues performers. His field recordings brought the world dozens of treasured performers, some of whom never recorded again after his initial visit. One of his most important finds was the Oklahoma newspaper reporter, social activist, and folk balladeer Woody Guthrie.

Lomax's recordings of Guthrie, made over a three-day period in March 1940, are collected in full on the three-disc LIBRARY OF CONGRESS RECORDINGS box set. The sessions were loose, unscripted affairs in the Lomax tradition. Between songs, Guthrie extemporizes on a variety of topics and provides a loose autobiography. But it's the songs, including magnificent performances of originals and standards like the gangster ballad "Pretty Boy Floyd," the topical "Dust Bowl Blues," and the spirited singalong "So Long, It's Been Good to Know Ya," that make this collection indispensable.

Personnel: Woody Guthrie (vocals, guitar, harmonica).

Not so much an album as a historical aural document, this nearly three-hour, three-CD set chronicles three days of interviews and songs featuring a 27-year-old Woody Guthrie on March 21, 22 and 27, 1940. Alan Lomax and his wife, Elizbeth, take Guthrie through his autobiography and his reflections on the Dust Bowl, and he proves a witty, rustic raconteur who is even more impressive when he picks up the guitar and performs such original songs as "So Long, It's Been Good to Know You," "Talking Dust Bowl Blues," "Do-Re-Mi," and "Pretty Boy Floyd," as well as traditional material. Guthrie did not make his first studio recordings until later in 1940, but his repertoire and performance style were clearly long-established by this time. It is easy to hear why he was such a revelation to the folk world of the '40s, especially because his influence has been so pervasive: much of the next 20 years in folk music derives from these sessions, even though they were not commercially released until 1964, as a box set on Elektra Records. Rounder reissued the album on LP in the 1988 and on CD in the 1997. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Woody Guthrie - Woody Guthrie Sings Folk Songs

In April 1944, 31-year-old Woody Guthrie discovered a recording outlet when he hooked up with record company owner Moses Asch, who agreed to let him cut a virtually unlimited number of masters informally. Guthrie simply would turn up at Asch's studios alone or with such friends as Cisco Houston, Sonny Terry, Leadbelly, and Bess Lomax Hawes, and record his repertoire of original and traditional songs. The repository soon grew to hundreds of titles, far more than even a major label, much less a tiny independent, could release contemporaneously. Over the decades, Asch did release many of the tracks, but by 1962, when he assembled the LP Woody Guthrie Sings Folk Songs, he still had a significant caché of unissued material like that found on this disc. In the ensuing 18 years, the folk revival had kicked in, and such artists as Joan Baez were taking folk music into the upper reaches of the charts. Guthrie was considered the godfather of the movement, and Woody Guthrie Sings Folk Songs played right into that, as he could be heard singing songs like "The Rising Sun Blues" (aka "The House of the Rising Sun") and "The Boll Weevil," the same songs that the new generation of folk singers were performing in coffee houses. In truth, with the combination of guitars, mandolin, harmonica, and fiddle, plus Houston's rough high harmonies, the arrangements often were more evocative of the old-timey country string bands of the '30s, such as the Monroe Brothers, than early-'60s urban folk. Then, too, although some of the songs were credited to Guthrie as a songwriter, this was not the Guthrie of "This Land Is Your Land," but rather Guthrie the traditional folk singer. Still, Woody Guthrie Sings Folk Songs was an excellent representation of rural folk music that consolidated Guthrie's position as the newly fashionable genre's main progenitor.

In the spring of 1944, fresh off a torpedoed merchant marine ship, Woody Guthrie began showing up at the offices of Moses Asch's Asch Records, where the record company owner let him make recordings informally; Guthrie would show up either alone or with a friend, usually his merchant marine partner Cisco Houston, but also Sonny Terry, Bess Lomax Hawes, and/or... more Leadbelly, and they would cut dozens of old folk songs, some with newly written lyrics by Guthrie, plus some of Guthrie's outright originals. The masters quickly piled up into the hundreds, far more than even a major label could release, and Asch had only issued a fraction of them by 1947, when he went bankrupt. That had ominous implications for Guthrie's discography, since some of the masters were retained by Asch's creditors, including his former partner, Herbert Harris of Stinson Records. The two disputed ownership of the material, but neither seems to have had the money for a legal battle. Asch, returning to solvency, put his Guthrie tracks out on his newly formed Folkways Records, while Harris released his on Stinson. (Other recordings were acquired by Pickwick Records and later appeared on such labels as Everest.)

The Very Best of Woody Guthrie: Legend of American Folk Blues

The Woody Guthrie album Worried Man Blues: The Best Of, released by Master Classics in 2005, is identical in contents and annotations to the Woody Guthrie album The Very Best Of released by Purple Pyramid in 2001. Ever since 1947, when record company owner Moses Asch declared bankruptcy and his former partner and creditor, Herbert Harris of Stinson Records, held onto a batch of Asch's Woody Guthrie masters in lieu of payment, those tracks, a small part of a cache of hundreds of casually recorded songs Guthrie and such friends as Cisco Houston and Sonny Terry made starting in April 1944, have been issued over and over on albums that, while unauthorized, are -- strictly speaking -- not illegal. (Asch disputed Harris' ownership of the tracks, but neither had the wherewithal to pursue claims in court.) The first of these albums were on Stinson Records, of course, but they have appeared on many labels since.

Here is another collection of a baker's dozen of them, licensed from San Juan Music Group. These old folk songs sometimes boast new lyrics from Guthrie, and the collection also includes the occasional Guthrie original, such as "Pretty Boy Floyd." With Houston chiming in on tenor vocals here and there, plus Sonny Terry's harmonica added to the guitar and/or mandolin accompaniment, the style is somewhat akin to the old-timey country music of such 1930s artists as the Monroe Brothers, and for the most part, this is not the Woody Guthrie of "This Land Is Your Land." Master Classics has taken some actions to separate its release from the pack of similar competitors, and bringing in Dave Thompson to write liner notes on each individual song was a good idea, along with listing recording dates and personnel. ~ William Ruhlmann

This CD is an open window on the simple recordings of Woody's raw folk music. Accompanied only by himself on guitar and harmonica the sounds feel very intimate. This is music which reflects the simple and restrained emotions of the poor of America. Aspirations, fears and feelings of pride all feature in the works. Highlights include 'Dust Pneumonia Blues', 'Put My Little Shoes Away' and 'Do Re Mi'. Music Club.

    Recorded in 1944.h

Personnel: Woody Guthrie (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Cisco Houston (vocals, guitar); Sonny Terry (harmonica).

    A Tribute to Woody Guthrie (1968 & 1970)

This is a various-artists set recorded at a charity fund raising concert at Carnegie Hall, January 20, 1968, held in memory of Woody Guthrie's then-recent death after years of illness.
The Part 1 recording from 1968, was originally released on LP in 1972 by Columbia. A Part 2 LP, from a Guthrie memorial concert at the Hollywood Bowl in 1970, was released by Warner Brothers. Warner Brothers later released both LP performances on a single CD.
The CD entitled A Tribute to Woody Guthrie (Warner Bros. 9 26036-2), subtitled "Highlights from Concerts at Carnegie Hall, [January 20,] 1968 [and] Hollywood Bowl, [September 12,] 1970", is further described as "A 2-record set on 1 Specially Priced Compact Disc"; the back jewel box insert also contains the following statement:
"Three tracks, "So Long (It's Been Good to Know Yuh)" by Judy Collins, "Vigilante Man" by Richie Havens and "Why Oh Why" by Odetta, which appear on the LP have been omitted so as to facilitate a single, specially-priced compact disc..."

In between the songs you can hear actors Robert Ryan, Peter "Easy Rider" Fonda and Will "Grandpa Walton" Geer recite narrations on Woody' life.

Woody Guthrie - Muleskinner Blues: The Asch Recordings, Vol.2

    Code:
    Download Link
Moses Asch was not only the founder of Folkways Records, but also a tireless preserver of traditional folk idioms and performers. Like John and Alan Lomax, he often traveled the country making field recordings of traditional folk songs, often along with reminiscences and anecdotes by the performers. By the time these recordings were made in a New York studio in the mid-'40s, Woody Guthrie was not only already a well-known performer and songwriter, he was nearing the end of his public career due to failing health. However, Asch treated these sessions just as he did his field recordings, neither adding to or taking from these classic songs as Guthrie chose to record them. Sometimes solo, sometimes with the backing of folks like Brownie McGhee, Sorry Terry, Pete Seeger, and Cisco Houston, Guthrie performs folk and blues standards with his characteristic dry wit and unerring gift for interpretation. This collection is essential.

Woody Guthrie - The Asch Recordings, Vol. 4; Buffalo Skinners (1999)

Recorded in New York, New York between 1944 and 1949. Includes liner notes by Jeff Place and Guy Logsdon.

All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.

Moses Asch, founder of Folkways Records and a tireless preserver of traditional folk idioms and performers, treated even his studio sessions like field recordings, neither adding to nor taking from the songs as his performers chose to play them. Performed mostly solo (though Cisco Houston occasionally appears on guitar and backing vocals), these tracks range from the allegorical kiddie song "Froggie Went a-Courtin'," complete with the bloody conclusion often removed from sanitized versions, to work songs and cowboy tunes, with special emphasis placed on biographical tunes like "Billy the Kid" and Guthrie's own gangster saga "Pretty Boy Floyd." By the time these recordings were made in a New York studio in the late '40s, Woody Guthrie was nearing the end of his public career due to failing health, but he performs these 26 traditional folk and blues ballads and story songs with his characteristic dry wit and unerring gift for interpretation.

Compilation producers: Jeff Place, Guy Logsdon.
Liner Note Authors: Guy Logsdon; Jeff Place.
    Recording information: 1944-1949.
Personnel: Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston (vocals, guitar).
    Producer: Moses Asch.

Woody's kids and grandkids sing along with his early recordings adding their voices and instruments to the originals where they exist and creating new music when needed. Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Burl Ives and others - The Ballad Operas - The Martins and The Coys

    Code:
    Download Link

This "ballad opera" is perhaps the most unlikely of all Alan Lomax projects. Recorded in 1944 for the BBC and reissued as part of the "Lomax Collection's Concert and Radio Series", "The Martins and the Coys" was based on a 1936 "imitation hillbilly" novelty hit by bandleader Ted Weems about feuding families similar to the Hatfields and the McCoys. The two families are eventually united by their love for America and mountain life, and by their hatred of fascism.

Lomax blended together narration, instrumentals, and traditional and topical songs, performed by urban and rural folk artists such as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger (both then unknown outside Manhattan folk circles), Burl Ives, and Grand Ole Opry great, Fiddlin' Arthur Smith. "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair" (Ives) and "Nine Hundred Miles" (Guthrie) are stunning. For collectors only, but it's that rarest of period pieces, one with style and substance. Listening to the unabashed patriotism of these performers, it's incomprehensible that within a decade, many would be blacklisted as un-American.

Woody Guthrie - Hard Luck Blues (2001)

Collections like 'Til We Outnumber 'Em and Mermaid Avenue, Vol. 1 and 2 attest to how the spirit of Woody Guthrie continues to influence folk music. In the first case, the influence is primarily political, in the latter, more poetic. While it's clear that a number of artists look to Guthrie for inspiration, it is also clear that many of their fans are less than intimate with this prominent folk forefather. Hard Luck Blues offers 21 classic Guthrie songs, a perfect introduction for fans of Billy Bragg and Ani DiFranco who only know the Dust Bowl balladeer secondhand. Several great numbers recount 1930s America, from outlaws ("Pretty Boy Floyd") to the Dust Bowl ("Ain't Got No Home") to the Depression ("Do Re Mi"). The inclusion of "Dust Pneumonia Blues," "Blowing Down That Old Dusty Road," and "Talking Dust Bowl Blues," all from Guthrie's monumental Dust Bowl Ballads, also make this a strong collection. Many listeners, unfamiliar with Guthrie, may find his stripped-down approach somewhat plain. His voice is untrained and he seldom uses a backup band. But what he lacks in pizzazz he more than makes up for in straightforward honesty and righteousness. Name a singer of the last 20 years who has written a folk song that equals "This Land Is Your Land" or "Pretty Boy Floyd." Hard Luck Blues offers folk fans a good place to dig a little deeper at their roots and discover why Wilco and so many others highly prize the elegant Okie from America's heartland.

Woody Guthrie - Worried Man Blues (1994)

Not to be confused with similarly titled Woody Guthrie albums (such as Collectables Records' Worried Man Blues: Golden Classics) the Special Music Company's Worried Man Blues is a ten-track, budget-priced release collecting some familiar songs that have appeared previously many times. They date from Guthrie's informal sessions for Moses Asch in the '40s, when he would turn up with such pals as Cisco Houston and harmonica player Sonny Terry in tow for off-the-cuff performances of their favorite old folk songs and some of Guthrie's originals. Terry in particular makes his presence felt on several of these tracks, notably "Lost John," which is a vocal-and-harmonica duet. The only one of Guthrie's major original compositions to appear is "Pretty Boy Floyd." The packaging is skimpy and in some cases inaccurate (the fourth track is "Gypsy Davy," not "Black Jack Davis [sic]"), and there are better representations of this material on disc. ~ William Ruhlmann

The Greatest Songs Of Woody Guthrie (1988)

    [IMG]http://i53.*******.com/o5p15s.jpg[/IMG]

A two-record set released on one CD, this collection of great Woody Guthrie songs performed by some of Guthrie's apostles, as well as by Guthrie himself, serves as a nice overview of his music. From the opening notes of "This Land Is Your Land" and a composite arrangement that starts with Guthrie and his guitar, then folds into the Weavers completing the song, this is very special music. With the mix of performers, it's like a hootenanny featuring some of the top American folk music artists who had fallen under Guthrie's spell. In addition to Pete Seeger's Weavers, longtime Guthrie cronies Cisco Houston and Ramblin' Jack Elliot are featured, along with the next generation's Joan Baez and Country Joe McDonald.

Deep-throated Odetta delivers the definitive version of "Pastures of Plenty," and Guthrie is spotlighted solo and with pals Sonny Terry and Houston. A folk-music delight from beginning to end.
