Arvo Pärt (born 1935) was a prolific modern composer whose works were noted for their minimalism and deep spirituality. He composed works for full orchestra and chamber groups as well as choral and keyboard pieces. His work was performed in concert halls and incorporated into religious observances.

The “Canon of Repentance” (Kanon Pokajanen) by Arvo Pärt utilizes a prayer book text in use since the earliest times in the Russian church. By using this text, Pärt’s composition connects itself to the tradition of the canon (Greek ‘rule, law’), a specific kind of ecclesiastical literature. The Eastern Church knows a large number of canons, each of which serves different purposes. The Canon of Repentance is one of them. The tradition of the canon began in Byzantium and blossomed in the 7th and 8th centuries through the works of St. Andrew of Create, St. John of Damascus and St. Cosmas the Great. Arvo Pärt’s Kanon Pokajanen is one may differentiate several points between the traditional canon form, with all its strict structural features, and this particular setting of a Canon by Arvo Pärt.

This is an exquisite recording for all those who like Arvo Pärt's compositions.

Arvo Part is a living national treasure to Estonia, and this album reveals such intimate access to his faith, sadness, and humility. Structured in five parts, Alina is a simple, chilling invocation of heartfelt desire comprised of only two movements that alternate with subtle variation. The opening lullaby of "Spiegel im Spiegel" is a gentle and melancholy embrace between Sergej Bezrodny on piano and Vladimir Spivakov on violin, where every note steps gracefully forward, as if ascending a fragile staircase. In contrast, the two movements of "Fur Alina" leave a little room for structured improvisation, as the top note in each chord is left for the performer to, as Part puts it, "explore within themselves." Thus, Alexander Malter deserves special recognition for breathing such mournful sweetness into these passages through every fingertip; every delicate cluster of notes shines like a distant star through a wintery black night. Malter stays on for the middle section of "Spiegel im Spiegel" and, with violoncello from Dietmar Schwalke, adds a more somber deliberateness to the piece that pianist Bezrodny shies away from in his performances (tracks one and five), instead opting for restrained tenderness. The disc closes much in the same way it opens: as if a prayer of deepest longing were just whispered into the still air. Frequent ECM producer Manfred Eicher calls upon his usual strengths, by letting the instruments speak for themselves in the right acoustical settings -- less is certainly more, and the stark beauty of Alina comes partly from what we hear between the notes: such a rich and gorgeous silence. This is perhaps one of Part's finest releases on compact disc, though one of his quietest. These are the tears of ghosts.

Premiere recordings of Arvo Pärt’s music belong on ECM New Series. This recording of the 4th Symphony – Pärt’s first symphonic work in more than 30 years - documents also the premiere concert performance at L.A.’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. Before Pärt started work on the composition, his thoughts had been circling around texts related to guardian angels. Then he received the commission from Los Angeles, a city whose very name means 'the angels'. His decision to make the Canon of the Guardian Angel the foundation of the new piece was a foregone conclusion. The 4th Symphony is augmented on disc by a new montage of “fragments” of Kanon Pokajanen, a piece which Pärt feels is closely related to the symphony. “To my mind, the two works belong together and form a stylistic unity."

"Marx and Lenin probably would not have appreciated the irony, but after decades of Communist repression of religion, the former Soviet bloc is the source of a profound outpouring of explicitly Christian expression. This is manifested in the music of such composers as Henryk Gorecki, a Pole, and Arvo Pärt, an Estonian. Part, a refugee from serialism, here writes in a quasi-minimalist style that he calls "tintinnabuli," a sound that echoes medieval composition. A fan of vocal music ("The human voice is the most perfect instrument of all"), he uses choruses to superb effect. This disc includes some of his best work, including the popular Magnificat, beautifully rendered by the Theatre of Voices under Paul Hillier."

"Anyone who has followed choral music during the past 30 years--and especially the last couple of decades--knows at least some of the works of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. This compilation features a fair selection of his more recent (primarily a cappella) pieces from the 1990s--but if you already own the earlier recordings from which these are drawn, you'll find a nice bonus here: the newly recorded Dopo la vittoria (Following the victory). This substantial (11-minute) "picola cantata", premiered in 1997, tells of St. Ambrose and his famous hymn Te Deum. No doubt this lively (some parts sound like folk-dance) and dramatically varied work--another masterpiece of text-explication and expressive use of vocal color and texture--will gain many performances and enthusiastic audiences, joining Pärt favorites such as Bogoroditse Djevo, Magnificat, and the Berliner Messe.

Although it's these latter two works that perhaps are most closely identified with Pärt's unique "tintinnabuli" style--the endlessly resonating triads and undulating, register-shifting consonances and dissonances--The woman with the alabaster box and I am the true vine may be his most purely, fundamentally beautiful compositions, melodically, harmonically, and from the standpoint of choral sound and texture. Whatever your preference, this is important and profoundly moving music in which almost anyone can find meaning, even spiritual resonance. The performances are uniformly excellent, even essential, and the recordings couldn't be better. This tribute to Pärt on his 70th birthday is an absolute joy."
