This live set, recorded at New York's Village Vanguard in the summer of 1997, presents pianist Brad Mehldau with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy, the same personnel as on The Art of the Trio, Volume One. This is hardcore jazz, with tunes by Cole Porter, Thelonious Monk, Jerome Kern, Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer, and John Coltrane. Mehldau hasn't yet earned a place in the highest rank of the jazz pantheon, but if he keeps making recordings of this caliber, he'll blow away a lot of the opposition. He doesn't wear his influences on his sleeve but, with the support of Grenadier and Rossy, executes harmonic reconstructions of standard texts.

New Age-leaning guitarist Pat Metheny and melancholic pianist Brad Mehldau have such distinctive, even rarified, sensibilities (each an acquired taste for some listeners), that their teaming may have looked like a one-time commercial ploy in the beginning. But having found rewarding common ground and a receptive audience through their shared love of pop, Brazilian music and Americana, they likely will work together again. Recorded at the same time as their first album, a duo effort, Quartet takes a satisfying step forward in featuring the Mehldau trio's first-rate bass and drum team, Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, on most of the tracks. Ranging from rhapsodic reflections to full-tilt fusion fare to loping, Wes Montgomery-inspired tunes--and let's not overlook that Asian-tinged song featuring Metheny on 42-string guitar--the music is sometimes a bit soft at the core. But when the stars are aligned, as on the effortlessly flowing, co-written opener, "A Night Away," and Metheny's charming "En La Tierra Que No Olvida," their partnership glows. It will be interesting to hear where they go from here.

Simply put, Brad Mehldau can flat-out play. Beyond his phenomenal skills is an uncanny ability to wring new sentiment out of old tunes ("I'll Be Seeing You") while also recontextualizing interesting contemporary pop as jazz composition (Radiohead's "Exit Music for a Film). On this, his fourth Art of the Trio recording, Mehldau again finds himself in the friendly confines of the Village Vanguard for an evening of his mood-swept melodies and tangled bop knots. Starting with an uptempo "All the Things You Are," the pianist concentrates on blistering right-hand solo work, taking only the slightest detours to wonder over the delicate soul of the tune. But this diversion is so subtle, so whispered that it threatens to go unnoticed if Mehldau were not meticulous with every melody he presses into the keys. Mehldau is often thought of as an "impressionistic" player, and on volume 4 he gives every song both the time and the permission to explore, change, and mutate. One minute, Mehldau is roaring up and down the keys on "Sehnsucht," the next he's turning the tune into a Brahms-like suite. With skills like that, we can only hope there's no end to Mehldau's Art of the Trio series.

Brad Mehldau has had quite a load on his shoulders since he burst on the scene in 1994. He is the latest pianist—and perhaps the most fit—to wear the title "next Bill Evans." And in light of Mehldau's work with rhythm section Jorge Rossi and Larry Grenadier on the acclaimed Art of the Trio series, the comparison could be argued as valid.
But, all things must change, and on his latest studio album Largo, Mehldau abandons the trio format that has served him so well over the past 8 years. Mehldau teams with producer Jon Brion utilizing horns, different rhythm sections, and the studio format itself to create an interesting, moving, and for Mehldau, unusual record.
Brion used different microphone techniques to change the sound of the piano. Mehldau does much less "blowing" on this record and plays more songs. There is very much a conscious effort to evoke an emotional response from the listener by the "sound" of the record rather than the actual playing. In this respect, Largo is a refreshing break from so many other jazz albums that whizz by, solo after solo.
Mehldau combines inspiring originals and some unusual covers to keep the record interesting and grounded. The opening track "When It Rains," as well as "Dusty McNugget," feature particularly crisp and effective horn arrangements that serve as a pad for Mehldau to state and restate themes. Mehldau's take of Radiohead's "Paranoid Android," while a valiant effort and a fun listen, falls short of the original's intensity. On the other hand, his medley between Jobim's "Wave" and the Beatles' "Mother Nature's Son" is a success, as is a second Beatles cover on the album, "Dear Prudence."
Overall, this album is a must for Jazz fans that are interested in a break from the norm. Certainly an intriguing and gratifying listen, and one of the year's best albums so far.

On Anything Goes, pianist Brad Mehldau sounds looser in the pocket than he has done in a long time in returning to the ruminative piano trio format with which he made his reputation. This comes after his so-so excursion into atmospheric pop production (Largo). In applying some of his quirkiest personal touches to jazz and pop standards, he also sounds--no offence intended--more awake. Hooking up with his longstanding rhythm mates, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy, Mehldau offsets his patented lyrical touches with antic minimalist strokes, bold vamps, and high-stepping two-hand strategies.
Alternately spiky and seductive, his unaccompanied playing on an initially languid "Get Happy" is a winning case of the left hand pretending not to know what the right hand is doing. Reharmonising Charles Chaplin's "Smile" with dense harmonic clouds, he obliterates that hoary melody. There's another sighing Radiohead treatment, "Everything in its Right Place" and an attempt at enlivening Paul Simon's "Still Crazy (After All These Years)" but it's his happy time with Thelonious Monk's "Skippy" that tells us that his best may be yet to come.

Brad Mehldau - Progression: The Art of the Trio (Volume 5)

Jazz | 2001 | 2 CD | MP3 CBR 320Kbps => 184MB-177MB | Time 1:09:25-1:06:34 | Covers
Progression was recorded in September of 2000 at the Village Vanguard. It is a double CD set of the trio with Mehldau, Grenadier and Rossy, and spans a wide range of material. There are the ballads: ‘The Folks Who Live on the Hill,’ and ‘Secret Love’ build on the lyrical approach that the trio has taken so far, while ‘Cry Me A River,’ and ‘How Long Has This Been Going On’ have a torch-like, slow-swinging quality, with more of a focus on the blues feeling in the interpretation.
About the latter two ballads, Mehldau comments, “I love to play that sort of ‘walking ballad,’ where you really sit in that tempo and stay there. That’s something we started to get to around the time we recorded ‘Progression,’: a ballad approach that’s a little less rhapsodic, a little more grounded in the pulse itself.” The opening two tunes of the album are the standard, ‘The More I See You,’ and Mehldau’s own ‘Dream’s Monk,’. Although they are indexed separately, they are actually a medley from one performance.
Taken as a whole, they build on the ‘epic’ formal approach Mehldau initiated on ‘Nice Pass’ on ‘Art of the Trio, Vol. IV’, by using metric modulation as a rhythmic device again, and stretching the harmonic and thematic material of the arrangement of the standard into the following original. ‘Dream’s Monk’ nods to the great jazz pianist and composer, Thelonious Monk, and along with ‘Sublation,’ another Mehldau original, shows how Monk’s music has impacted Mehldau. Nick Drake’s ‘River Man’ is an emotional high point to the set, steadily building towards a passionate climax.

The Highway Rider is pianist and composer Brad Mehldau's second collaboration with enigmatic pop producer Jon Brion. The first was 2002's ambitious but tentative Largo. As a collaboration, The Highway Rider is much more confident by contrast. Mehldau's most ambitious work to date, its 15 compositions are spread over two discs and 100 minutes. His trio --bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard -- is augmented by saxophonist Joshua Redman, drummer Matt Chamberlain, and a chamber orchestra conducted by Dan Coleman. The album is a narrative jazz suite, orchestrated and arranged by Mehldau, though it has much in common with classical and pop music, as well.

Brad Mehldau has followed his musical inclinations into some surprise territories. First gaining attention as a member of Joshua Redman's quartet in the early 1990s, he could have easily been expected to unfold a new traditionalist's approach to jazz. Instead he's taken that formidable grounding and attached it to a wide range of compositional explorations. The solo piano Live in Tokyo is framed by a pair of Nick Drake compositions, and in between are pieces by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Thelonious Monk, and Radiohead, along with one original. The material is all linked by Mehldau's focus on melodic identity and harmonic invention. He succeeds in finding the stately heart of each number, with Radiohead's "Paranoid Android" sounding perfectly natural alongside Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On?"
