Unquestionably, the best album under Cannonball's name. The quintet/sextet albums are mostly geared to a more pop market and contain much "packaged" soul and funk, while the dates Cannonball shared with Miles, Bags, Bill Evans, Coltrane, and Gil Evans often find him deferring to or competing against musical temperaments not wholly sympathetic with his own. But with no other horn to share the solo space and a grooving accompanist like Wynton Kelley, Cannonball indeed "takes charge," having his ebullient, inventive way with a varied program of show tunes ("If This Isn't Love)," soul tunes ("Barefoot Sunday Blues"), jazz standards ("I Remember You") and sentimental old favorites ("Poor Butterfly"). And the photo of Cannonball on the front cover of this Riverside classic is as good as any I've seen of this masterful musician. For the sake of jazz fans, saxophonists, and collectors everywhere, let's hope this one remains in circulation, digitally remastered or not (Cannonball's musical mastery is sufficient in itself).

One of the great alto saxophonists, Cannonball Adderley had an exuberant and happy sound that communicated immediately to listeners. His intelligent presentation of his music (often explaining what he and his musicians were going to play) helped make him one of the most popular of all jazzmen.
Adderley already had an established career as a high school band director in Florida when, during a 1955 visit to New York, he was persuaded to sit in with Oscar Pettiford's group at the Cafe Bohemia. His playing created such a sensation that he was soon signed to Savoy and persuaded to play jazz full-time in New York. With his younger brother, cornetist Nat, Cannonball formed a quintet that struggled until its breakup in 1957. Adderley then joined Miles Davis, forming part of his super sextet with John Coltrane and participating on such classic recordings as Milestones and Kind of Blue. Adderley's second attempt to form a quintet with his brother was much more successful for, in 1959, with pianist Bobby Timmons, he had a hit recording of "This Here." From then on, Cannonball always was able to work steadily with his band.
During its Riverside years (1959-1963), the Adderley Quintet primarily played soulful renditions of hard bop and Cannonball really excelled in the straight-ahead settings. During 1962-1963, Yusef Lateef made the group a sextet and pianist Joe Zawinul was an important new member. The collapse of Riverside resulted in Adderley signing with Capitol and his recordings became gradually more commercial. Charles Lloyd was in Lateef's place for a year (with less success) and then with his departure the group went back to being a quintet. Zawinul's 1966 composition "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" was a huge hit for the group, Adderley started doubling on soprano, and the quintet's later recordings emphasized long melody statements, funky rhythms, and electronics. However, during his last year, Cannonball Adderley was revisiting the past a bit and on Phenix he recorded new versions of many of his earlier numbers. But before he could evolve his music any further, Cannonball Adderley died suddenly from a stroke.

1973's INSIDE STRAIGHT is one of Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's last studio recordings--he was dead within two years of its release. But unlike some recordings made toward the end of a jazz innovator's career, it's as exciting and impassioned as most of the albums that precede it. Despite a somewhat suite-like structure--the first and last tracks are called "Introduction" and "The End," and themes recur throughout the eight tracks--this is a relaxed, swinging album.
INSIDE STRAIGHT features some outstanding solos, not only from Adderley and his cornetist brother Nat, but also from every member of the quintet. The title track and "Five of a Kind" are particular highlights of the group's improvisation, but the more structured, Brazilian-tinged "Saudade" is the album's highest point. This gentle, groove-oriented tune recalls the best work of Antonio Carlos Jobim--no small praise.

Compiled by pianist Joe Zawinul, this Capitol collection features 10 songs composed by Zawinul himself and performed by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. Both one-time members of Miles Davis's groups, Adderley and Zawinul began their association in the early 1960s when Zawinul joined the sax man's ensemble. In addition to writing some of Adderley's most memorable and popular material, Zawinul proved instrumental in pushing the quintet toward a more soulful, commercially viable sound.
Zawinul's compositions are characterized by a synthesis of traditional bop, the open structures of Davis's and Coltrane's more modal albums, and the funk-inflected rhythms of BITCHES BREW and late-'60s soul music. CANNONBALL PLAYS ZAWINUL's opener, "74 Miles Away," is an extended shape-shifting piece that flirts with Indian scales and features spectacular solos by Cannonball, Zawinul, and cornetist Nat Adderley (Cannonball's brother). The set runs the gamut of styles, from the sprawling melody line of "Hippodelphia," which recalls MILESTONES-era hard bop, to the surging soul riff of "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," which became a hit for Cannonball. Zawinul's excellent tunes and Cannonball's dexterous alto work, at once blues-drenched and progressive, make this disc a winner.

Cannonball Adderley Sextet - Lugano (1963)

Looking for hidden treasures? The Swiss banks vaults conceal some mighty ones, but, alas, they are unavailable for most of us. Whereas hidden treasures in Swiss radio vaults are becoming available. Like this groovy tape found at the Italian speaking Swiss radio in Lugano: Cannonball's sextet from the early sixties (1963). A funky and churchy and soulful tape, too. Dig six very swinging cats cookin' it up and around and about. Let's forget all the jazz jive from way back and concentrate on the music. Live jazz on record is the best substitute for live music.
The happenings in this Lugano concert are outstanding: Cannonball's alto sax, itself an invitation to jazz wonderland and Nat Adderley's cornet, with its persistent warmth and ebullience. Yusef Lateef's tenorsax, flute and oboe: he's one of those musicians who have captured the sound of jazz, a considerable achievement - furthermore, no matter how you look at Lateef's work, you have the feeling that he has never been awarded the recognition he deserves. Joe Zawinul's piano of the time sounds like a cross section of many bop and hard bop pianists and, at one and the same time, he's so convincing, solid and always willing that you can't escape the feeling there must be a lot of Zawinuls that never got a chance to develop! Sam Jones' bass swings so hard you could certainly listen to him just keep time and be happy. Last but not least, Louis Hayes' drumming is meant to keep everybody busy at giving the best of themselves. This is a recording you'll enjoy time and again. Both because it's live and so very much alive.

Cannonball Adderley With Bill Evans - Know What I Mean? (1961)

Jazz, Classic Jazz
Despite being overshadowed by the musical reputation of John Coltrane, Cannonball never needs apologies or justification, and this is a superb example of his playing. On this recording, Adderly's lyrical sound and masterful technique are at their best. His music is lightly lyrical and it swings hard, but it always seems to have (dare I say it?) joy at its base. This fine jazz album was created by two musicians who participated with Coltrane in the sessions for Miles Davis' famous "Kind of Blue" album. Cannonball Adderly is the alto saxophone player on that album and Bill Evans is the pianist. Reunited here, it's obvious that they respect and enjoy one another's music, and the album--recorded over a three month period in 1961--reflects their mutual comfort. The songs include Evans' "Waltz for Debbie," now a 3/4 time jazz standard, and the title track "Know What I Mean?" Evans is joined by half of the Modern Jazz Quartet--Percy Heath on bass and the always-appropriate Connie Kay on drums to complete the rhythm trio. They provide solid support for Cannonball throughout the album. As I noted, Cannonball is ebullient throughout, and Evans' superb solos and his prescient interplay with Adderly make this album a must have jazz recording.
Possibly the best of Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's many releases, 1961's Know What I Mean? finds the alto saxophonist in a different setting. Usually found fronting hard-bop combos featuring his brother Nat on cornet, Adderley is here accompanied by pianist Bill Evans, bassist Percy Heath, and Modern Jazz Quartet drummer Connie Kay. In these more placid surroundings, Adderley showcases an entirely different side to his playing.

Cannonball Adderley - Nippon Soul (1963)

Recorded live in Tokyo on July 14th and 15th, 1963, Nippon Soul is not the Asian-jazz fusion suggested by the title (check out Cal Tjader's Several Shades of Jade and Breeze From the East for that), but a solid live set that showcases one of Cannonball Adderley's finest groups, featuring himself, brother Nat Adderley on cornet, bassist Sam Jones, drummer Louis Hayes, and most notably pianist Joe Zawinul and reedsman Yusef Lateef. Both near the beginnings of their careers, Zawinul and Lateef nonetheless dominate this set; two of the original tracks are by Lateef, including the centerpiece "Brother John," for John Coltrane and featuring an astonishing extended Lateef solo on oboe, an instrument not normally associated with jazz, but which takes on an almost Middle Eastern fluidity and grace in its approximation of Coltrane's "sheets of sound" technique. Zawinul arranged the standards for the group, reinterpreting Cole Porter's warm "Easy to Love" as a fleet bebop vehicle for a wicked Adderley solo and working the "Come Sunday" section of Duke Ellington's "Black, Brown and Beige" into a full gospel-style call and response between himself and Jones. Often overlooked, this is one of Adderley's finest albums. The CD reissue includes an extra track, an extended take on "Work Song."

A pleasant date recorded in late 1962 with South American musicians the Bossa Rio Sextet of Brazil. Cannonball is heard alongside Sergio Mendes on piano, future Weather Report percussionist Dom Um Romao, and featured on five cuts is Paulo Moura on alto saxophone with Pedro Paulo on trumpet. Unfortunately this release contains little fire, as Adderley didn't get much rehearsal time with these musicians. Combined with the repetitious nature of the Bossa Nova these proceedings can get tedious. This session was originally released on Riverside, but Adderley took several master tapes (including this one) when he made his move to Capitol.

Three years after having a surprise hit ("This Here") recorded live at The Jazz Workshop in San Francisco, Cannonball Adderley and his sextet (featuring cornetist Nat Adderley and Yusef Latef on tenor, flute and oboe) returned to the club and recorded this particularly rewarding LP,
reissued by Orrin Keepnews on his Landmark label. The material was challenging but hard-swinging, including "Primitivo," "Jessica's Days," "Mellow Buno" and Nat Adderley's new composition "The Jive Samba." A previously unknown version of the classic "Unit 7" was substituted for the Sam Jones ballad "Lillie" with this issue. Every recording by this particular unit is well worth acquiring.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson gives an inspiring brief speech to open the festivities, and the Quintet begins with "Walk Tall," a lively jazz/R&B number. Named in honor of Jackson "Country Preacher" and written by keyboardist Joe Zawinul, the changing tempo tribute has two contrasting grooves: one's sad and reflective, the other happy and boisterous. The album tributes Jacksons' Operation Breadbasket program in Chicago, IL. Nat Adderley composed "Hummin'," a masterfully executed piece; the Adderley brothers' stinging solo's are complemented by Zawinul's sparkling piano play. Bassist Walter Booker shines on "Oh Babe," a vamp that owes more to blues than jazz, and Cannonball sings the bluesy lyrics like he had too much to drink. "Afro Spanish Omelet" has four parts: "Umbakwen" written by Nat finds Cannoball's sax at it's inquisitive best. Booker solos the entire 3:03 seconds of "Soli Tomba." "Oiga" is Zawinul's best solo, and drummer Roy McCurdy plays like a disturbed man surrounding Zawinul's probing electric piano with some imaginative percussioning. Cannonball displays well-trained chops on "Marabi" as he battles with brother Nat's coronet. Jesse Jackson kicks off "The Scene" while Cannoball gives thanks and group introductions over a roadhouse groove.

An album of Broadway hits could easily become a lackluster commercial concession, but Adderley’s Fiddler on the Roof is far from boring. Recorded less than a month after the show opened on Broadway, the title tune fits surprisingly well into the group’s hard-bop style. Cannonball eloquently embellishes the theme and Zawinul weaves a clever countermelody behind the altoist’s lead. The brothers exhibit that exuberant and soulful Adderley bounce, Lloyd ventures into Coltrane-like territory, and Zawinul shows he had something to say on the acoustic piano years before he famously went electric. Brown and Hayes’s engine churns and their persistent prodding moves things along nicely.

For this CD reissue of a Riverside date, altoist Cannonball Adderley's 1961 Quintet (which includes cornetist Nat Adderley, pianist Victor Feldman, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes) is joined by guest pianist Wynton Kelly on five of the eight selections, during which Feldman switches quite effectively to vibes. The music falls between funky soul-jazz and hard bop, and each of the performances (particularly "Star Eyes" and "Well You Needn't") is enjoyable. The CD adds a new alternate take of "Lisa" and the previously unissued "O.P." to the original program.

Just a glance at the list of musicians participating in the recording session in June 1956 is enough to send the blood racing through your veins. But what is more, this recording fulfils all expectations and offers undiluted, swinging jazz of the very best order, the very best of its day! And yes, this disc would probably have a lot to offer even without the participation of Julian “Cannonball” Adderley – then right at the very beginning of his career – since all the musicians offer brilliant performances, and the arrangements are more than perfect, tailor-made as they were by Ernie Wilkens for the ten-man ensemble. Quite apart from the fact that the glorious music-making of this “condensed” big band offers an ideal background for “Cannonball’s” on the whole carefree, racy solo passages, the solo contributions from Jimmy Cleveland on the trombone, Jerome Richardson on the flute and of course Junior Mance on the piano are sheer joy. Not to forget “Cannonball’s” brother Nat Adderley – often left somewhat in the shadows – whose brilliance on the cornet is heard loud and clear on this recording.
Even before the time when “Cannonball” stood alongside Miles Davis at the beginning of the Sixties, all the musicians obviously had tremendous fun at the recording session. Be warned: such fun is infectious!

For an altoist to be dubbed “the new Bird”, following the death of the great or perhaps even supreme Charlie Parker, is certainly more than flattering. But it is not so easy to be dispose of such a tag.
Julian Edwin Adderly, better known as “Cannonball”, certainly did not need such labelling – he was great in every sense of the word and admired for being what he was – and that was in no way insignificant! Just as imposing as his stature was his art of playing – snappy, racy and incredibly rhythmical. So it was really no wonder that Miles Davis recognized in him the perfect counterpart to John Coltrane and augmented his quintet to a sextet in 1958, recording his now legendary album Kind of Blue in March and April 1959.
The present album, recorded by the Cannonball Adderly Quintet in February of that year, is also possessed with the very same genius. The common factor is Davis, for all musicians at the recording session played with the Miles Davis Group. There is an intimacy here that is clearly recognizable in Cannonball’s solos, where one can already hear the influence of Davis.
This recording represents a jazz happening of the highest order, with breath-taking solo dialogues between two giants of the saxophone at the very height of their art.

The music on this CD reissue is better than it should be. Cannonball Adderley had a fluke hit with "African Waltz" so a full album was recorded with the hope of coming up with additional hits. These 11 selections (which include "African Waltz") feature altoist Adderley backed by an 18-piece big band with arrangements provided by Ernie Wilkins and Bob Brookmeyer. The tunes clock in between two and five minutes and leave little room for much improvising by anyone other than Cannonball, his brother Nat on cornet, and pianist Wynton Kelly. There is some strong material on the set (including "West Coast Blues," "Stockholm Sweetnin'" and a remake of "This Here") but the results are not too substantial and this was not that big a seller; it is still a reasonably enjoyable effort.

Cannonball Adderly - Ballads

Ballads is a lovely collection of Cannonball Adderley's work on Blue Note from the late '50s to the mid-'60s. Since the nine selections have been taken from nine different albums, the personnel varies widely. The overall mood and approach, however, remain uniform. On "Now I Have Everything" flutist Charles Lloyd, pianist Joe Zawinul, and cornet player Nat Adderley join in for a short, impressionistic lullaby; on "Easy Living" pianist Barry Harris, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes lend their talents to a soulful take on a favorite standard. Adderley's alto paints in broad, expressionistic colors, wringing just a little more feeling from each note of "I Worship You" and "I Can't Get Started." The mood of pieces like "Dancing in the Dark" reminds one of a rainy night in a film noir classic, with the lights reflecting against the wet city streets at three a.m. The last cut, the 15-minute "The Song My Lady Sings," caps off 55 minutes of quiet, reflective jazz. This low-key exit quietly ebbs and flows as the band fills it with atmosphere to spare. For the unfamiliar, Ballads will serve as relaxed introduction into Adderley's stunning work; for all others, Ballads will serve as the perfect disc for late-night listening.

Cannonball Adderley - 1966 Cannonball In Japan
Japanese live albums are almost always a delight. Respectful audiences and high-fidelity recording equipment usually combine to make terrific-sounding records of strong, intense performances. Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's fantastic live document IN JAPAN is no exception. Recorded in August of 1966, in Tokyo, IN JAPAN features the alto saxophonist at the peak of his career. Backed by his best band--cornet player Nat Adderley, electric pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Victor Gaskin, and drummer Roy McCurdy--Adderley runs through a fairly standard set but does so in anything but a workmanlike way. The extended take on "Mercy Mercy Mercy" is perhaps even fierier than the one that would soon become a Top-20 pop hit. "Work Song" and a swinging "Jive Samba" open and close the show in style, but less familiar tunes like "The Sticks" and "Money in the Pocket" are nearly as memorable.
One can't keep up with this session. I once had a party where people were unfamiliar wiht both jazz and Cannonball totally freaked out, because this is to funky. The playing of Cannonball himself, and Nat especially, is so intense that it is no surprice that they put the audience on fire. And Zawinul just keeps on building up solos. Every time you think it's over, he starts all over again, making it even more funky. Cannonball made so many wonderfull live-recordings, each with different qualities. If you are looking for the uncompromising funky cannonball, this is it.
