Charlie Musselwhite - The Well (2010)

    mp3 320kbps | 104MB

"Rambler's Blues," the shuffling hip-shaker that opens Charlie Musselwhite's The Well, is the most autobiographical statement he's ever made — until you listen to the rest of the record. Despite his large catalogue, this is his first record of all original material. Musselwhite's back with Alligator after a sojourn of 14 years, during which he recorded some stellar material for various labels, including the stellar Delta Hardware for Real World in 2006. Musselwhite is accompanied here by a stellar band: guitarist Dave Gonzales, bassist John Bazz, and drummer Stephen Hodges. His own harmonica playing and vocals are everywhere and top-notch. The most compelling thing about The Well is its lack of pretension; Musselwhite has risen to the task of recording a completely autobiographical album that refuses easy clichés, or resting on laurels; its energy is infectious. This happens even on "Sad and Beautiful World," where he addresses the murder of his 93-year-old mother in her home during a burgluary. With duet help from Mavis Staples, he tells the story unwaveringly in an uptempo shuffling jump that evokes his lifetime obsession with the road, the blues, and his deep sadness over such a senseless and brutal loss. (His harmonica solo, punctuated by Staples' sung gospel-like responses, expresses volumes.) The jazz-blues of "Dig the Pain," addressing his willing participation in the misery of alcoholism, is a dirty love song without irony. The title track is a strutter about the inspiration he gained from Jessica McClure, a young girl trapped in a Texas well who sang nursery rhymes to herself as consolation until she was rescued. He gets down deep inside his brand of roadhouse blues to make sure nobody feels anything but admiration for Ms. McClure while revealing what he learned from the experience. (Impressed by her courage and ashamed at his lack of it, Musselwhite quit drinking that day, 22 years ago.) Other tracks, such as "Cadillac Women," "Good Times," "Cook County Blues," and "Just You, Just Blues," address different aspects of a bluesman's life — perhaps all bluesmen's lives — in fingerpopping, ass-shaking manner. "Hoodoo Queen," and "Sorcerer's Dream," are obsessive sense impressions from Musselwhite's personal and roiling, brooding blues language. Other knockouts are "Sonny Payne Special" and "Clarksdale Getaway," instrumental harmonica strutters that simply stomp. The Well is different from any recording Musselwhite's done before, but it also represents him and his experience of the blues in a singular and profound way. It's damn near perfect. <AMG>

Charlie Musselwhite - Delta Hardware (2006)

    mp3 192kbps | 58MB

While Charlie Musselwhite has always been an adventurous musician -- take into consideration his fine Cuban inflected Continental Drifter, the Americana drenched One Night In America, and the rollicking rock and soul on Sanctuary -- the Delta of his upbringing has never been left out of the mix entirely. Musselwhite may have had a reason to dig so deeply into the hard-edged roots of Delta by way of Chicago blues on this set: he lost both his parents in 2005. The CD booklet is filled with pictures of the sites of his life in Mississippi. Delta Hardware was recorded with Musselwhite's road band, and it has the feeling of motion along with its looking into the past. Guitarist Chris "Kid" Andersen, bassist Randy Bermudes, and drummer June Core hop into the heart of the electric trancelike blues that have been a part of Musselwhite's backbone his entire performing career. The question is, why didn't he record with these guys before? Delta Hardware is a raw, squalling album heavy on brittle guitars, trancelike rhythms, and of course, Musselwhite's harmonica filling the gaps where his world-weary voice shouts, hollers, and bellows. Musselwhite and band dig deep here. The set opens with the strolling minor-key rock & roll blues of "Church Is Out," where Musselwhite offers an autobiographical sketch with boasts worthy of Jay Z. This shimmy shaking electric blues is merely a portent of things to come. On the track that follows, "One of These Mornings," all hell breaks loose. A call and response between Musselwhite and Andersen shuffles like a train off the track to Core's triple-time drums. When he sings, it's more like a roar; unfettered, full of power and the grit necessary to wail above a band playing their asses off. His harp solo is just a scorcher, and it all happens in two-minutes-and-thirty-seconds. "Sundown" is a classic one-four-five shuffle, but with dueling slide guitars popping over the top of Musselwhite's voice. The blunt edge of the blade comes home to roost on "Black Water," where Musselwhite, his harp, and Andersen's guitars are a wandering band of prophets from the old testament warning of the perils of the present age; Musselwhite sounds sad but determined; he's unflinching in his terror-vision and it is bleak. The music is sad as well; it's trancelike, Junior Kimbrough-styled -- repetitive, percussive, snaky -- and when it's time for his brief harp solo, the instrument sounds like it's weeping. Little Walter's "Just a Feeling" is just plain slow and mean. It's a swampy moaner and Andersen's guitars are like fine forged steel with a serrated edge. When Musselwhite digs into his spoken word bag over the tough-assed blues as on the opener and "Invisible Ones," there's not a second that doesn't work. His jeremiad is pure working-class poetry. There is proof in the pudding too, where the crowd expresses its appreciation for the hip-shaking "Clarksdale Boogie," recorded at Red's Juke Joint in that very town. Delta Hardware is the kind of record only a veteran could make, full of backbone, spit and vinegar; it is an early candidate for blues record of the year.

In My Time places the 50-year-old harmonica whiz and blues veteran in a variety of settings: there are
two unaccompanied songs, two songs with gospel harmonies from the Blind Boys of Alabama, seven songs with an
L.A. blues band led by Mike "Junior" Watson, and five songs with Musselwhite's road trio. Holding the session
together is Musselwhite's imposing personality, dignified and all business. Musselwhite's collaboration with
the Five Blind Boys on a slow, minimalist version of the Dixie Hummingbirds' "Bedside of a Neighbor" is a
stunning reminder of where blues and gospel overlap. The album's highlights, though, come on the songs with
Watson's quartet, especially when ex-Blaster pianist Gene Taylor creates a boogie-woogie beat under Roosevelt
Sykes's "Casual Friend" or a Latin bounce under Musselwhite's "When It Rains It Pours" for the
singer to fall into. --Geoffrey Himes

Charlie Musselwhite - Stand Back! Here Comes Charley Musselwhite's South Side Band

    256 kbps

Charlie Musselwhite (born January 31, 1944 in Kosciusko, Mississippi) is an American blues-harp player and bandleader, one of the non-black bluesmen who came to prominence in the early 1960s, along with Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield. Though he has often been identified as a "white bluesman",[1][2] he claims Native American heritage. Musselwhite was reportedly the inspiration for Dan Aykroyd's Blues Brothers.

    Charlie Musselwhite - Rough Dried, Live At The Triple Door / 2008 / 320kbps / 164 MB / 1:11:44

    11. Drop Down Baby
    12. Cristo Redentor

    From RockTheBlues dot com
When it comes to stomping, lowdown blues harmonica it just doesn't get any better
than Charlie Musselwhite, and what could be better than a live recording
right from Seattle's own Triple Door?

The 12 tracks contain only three covers, one being Charlie's main stay since his first release,
"Cristo Redentor" (aka Cristo Redemptor) as an encore.
Charlie's supporting cast on Rough Dried-Live at the Triple Door features the same band
that performed on Charlie's '07 Real World Records CD Delta Hardware with
Chris "Kid" Anderson-guitar (Terry Hank, Rick Estrin & the Nightcats)
whois also in the credits as the mixer and one of the recorders along with Glenn Dennler.

I could easily expound at length about each track; but there isn't room for that here.
The set is jump started wit the opening cut "River Hip Mama,"
the barnburner from Charlie's '09 Alligator set Ace of Harps (one of the three cuts included off that CD).
Charlie describes "Feel It In Your Heart" as Brazilian blues,
which appropriately features an infectious Latin beat.
It is off the '97 Point Blank release Rough Edges as is the triple track "Rough Dried Woman."

Rough Dried-Live at the Triple Door absolutely cooks from start to finish
and will go down as one of my favorite CD's in quite some time.

Continental Drifter was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
What makes this recording unique in Musselwhite's catalogue though,
is the incorporation of pronounced Cuban and Brazilian influences.
"Little Star" is a bright Barney Kessel tune given a jazzy bossa nova treatment.
"Que Te Parece, Cholita?" is one of several songs recorded with Cuban musicians
in the traditional folk style of that country. Bringing things full circle,
the two sparse tunes that close out the album have a Delta blues flavor,
though Musselwhite is accompanied by Cuban musicians here as well.
Continental Drifter is proof that there are still some new places to take the blues.

Charlie Musselwhite - vocal & harmonica
    Robben Ford - guitar
    Clay Cotton - piano
    Steve Ehrman - bass
    Patrick Ford - drums

    Recorded in San Francisco, 1983 & 84;
    Produced by Patrick Ford

Drummer/label head Patrick Ford reunited with Charlie and brought along brother Robben Ford on guitar,
producing this return to form. Charlie is up to the task in all departments --
singing, playing (great tone), and especially songwriting
(the title tune and "Seemed Like the Whole World Was Crying," and inspired by Muddy Waters's death) --
but it had been a while since Robben had played lowdown blues (touring with Joni Mitchell,
putting in countless hours in L.A. studios).
Pianist Clay Cotten is in fine form, and it may have been wiser to give the guitar chair to Tim Kaihatsu,
who by this time had seniority (in terms of hours on the bandstand with Musselwhite)
    over any of Charlie's alumni.
The to-be-expected-by-now deviations this time out: Don & Dewey's "Stretchin' Out,"
an impressive chromatic harp rendering of "Exodus," and Charlie's solo guitar outing, "Baby-O."
Easily Charlie's best-engineered album (nice job, Greg Goodwin). (from AMG)
