    Chet Baker - Live From the Moonlight (1985)

    MP3 ~ 128kbps ~ RS.com ~ 87mb ~ Cover
    Genre: Jazz / cool, West Coast
    Original Recording Date: November 24, 1985
    Venue: Moonlight Club, Mancerta, Italy
    Tracks: 7
    Time: 93:37
    Label: Philology 214W

    Chetbakertribute.com:
    Live Italian gig with Chet is great shape. An intimate setting with long tunes, flawless solos and decent recording quality. Easily one of Chet's best recordings from 1985. The long tunes never tire on the listener, as each of Chet's solos offer (pleasant) surprise after surprise. Grailler (piano) and Moriconi (bass) contribute some great solos, but that night belonged to Chet. Highlights include a sad, pretty "Polka Dots", followed by the dreamy ''Estate". That song was always a great fit for Chet, with that lovely low note that starts the melody. It's like it was written just for him. On a bluesy "Valentine", Chet plays a powerful solo, hitting some powerful high notes before closing the tune with his whispering vocals.

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (trumpet); Michel Graillier (piano); Ricardo Del Fra (bass)

    Tracks:
    01. Polka Dots and Moonbeams (13:31)
    02. Nightbird (11:34)
    03. Estate (17:26)

    Chet Baker - Smokin' with the Chet Baker Quintet (1965)

    MP3 ~ 192kbps ~ Cover ~ RS.com ~ 56mb
    Genre: Jazz / cool, West Coast, bop
    Audio CD: 31 August, 1999
    Recording Date: Aug 23, 1965-Aug 25, 1956
    Label: Prestige PRLP 7449

    AMG:
    One of five albums Baker recorded with the same hard-driving quintet (tenor-saxophonist George Coleman, pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Herman Wright and drummer Roy Brooks) for Prestige within a short period of time, these sessions let one know he could break through his "cool" image by playing heated bop when he wanted to. It also finds him debuting on fluegelhorn and the softer tone of the horn fit his introverted sound well.

    Chetbakertribute.com:
    For 3 amazing days in August, 1965, Chet laid down 32 tracks for Prestige. He's backed by an experienced band featuring George Coleman (who played in Miles Davis' band) on Tenor Sax. Baker does surprising well, considering he's working with unfamiliar musicians and mostly original material -- lots of hard-bop tunes penned by Richard Carpenter and Tadd Dameron. The LP titles and art work were a blatant rip-off of similarly-packaged Miles Davis recordings, such as Walkin' and Workin'. This would Chet's last great studio work until his 1974 comeback. (The sessions were released on 3 CD's in 1996: On A Misty Night, Stairway to the Stars, and Lonely Star.)

    Personnel: Chet Baker - Flugelhorn; George Coleman - Tenor Sax; Kirk Lightsey - Piano; Herman Wright - Bass; Roy Brooks - Drums

    Tracks:
    01. Grade A Gravy - 6:24
    02. Serenity - 5:20
    03. Fine and Dandy - 7:22
    04. Have You Met Miss Jones? - 6:38

    Time: 51:10
    Label: Enja (G) (ENJ 5005-1)

    Chet Baker's European trio recorded live, at the "7th Jazz Festival", Munster, West Germany, June 21, 1985.

    On this 1985 concert recording, charismatic trumpet player/vocalist Chet Baker performs with guitarist Philip Catherine and bassist Jean Louis Rassinfosse. Baker performs such trademark tunes as Cole Porter's "Love for Sale" and Gershwin's "But Not For Me," but the settings are unique. On the former, Baker employs a distinctly funky approach. It's rare to hear Baker soloing over what amounts to a one-chord jam. Rassinfosse develops an ostinato purposely devoid of harmonic progression. Seizing the moment, Catherine and Baker develop their respective solos with great confidence and poise.

    At times, Catherine's sound is more akin to rock than it is to jazz. He goes so far as to use slight distortion on "Sad Walk" and "Love for Sale." Rassinfosse performs on what sounds like an electric, upright bass sans a wooden body. This musical approach is incongruent with the other Baker settings. A pioneer of the so-called West Coast cool sound, Baker seems to be in stylistic opposition to music that hints at "rock" in any way. Despite such disparities, this trio demonstrates great musical empathy and confluence.

    AMG:
    Baker always sounded at his best when performing in a trio with guitar and bass. Guitarist Philip Catherine and bassist Jean Louis Rassinfosse (both of whom had recorded with the trumpeter previously) are major assets to the subtle but swinging session. Each of the performances (Bob Zieff's "Sad Walk," Horace Silver's "Strollin'," "Love for Sale," "But Not for Me" and a 15-minute version of Richard Beirach's "Leaving") are extended versions but there are no rambling or wandering moments during this set of lyrical jazz.

    Personnel: Chet Baker, trumpet, vocal; Philip Catherine, guitar; Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, bass

    Tracks:
    01. Sad Walk (9:58)
    02. Strollin' (9:10)
    03. Love For Sale (9:20)

    Genre: Jazz / cool, West Coast
    Label: Frances Concert FDC 128
    Recorded November 10, 1978, Chataeauvallon, France

    This is Chet Baker’s superlative "Chateauvallon Concert", recorded live in France in a quartet setting. In addition to a strong supporting cast, the performance features two vocal numbers which showcase Chet’s gift at scat-singing.

    Personnel: Chet Baker, trumpet, vocals; Phil Markowitz, piano; Scott Lee, bass;
    Jeff Brillinger, drums

    Tracks:
    01. Oh, You Crazy Moon (12:40)
    02. Love For Sale (15:00)

    04. There Will Never Be Another You (9:50)

    Recording Date: Oct 25, 1985, Zagreb, Yugoslavia
    Time: 58:50
    Label: Timeless

    AMG:
    There may never be another Chet Baker, but on this particular night in Zagreb, poor Baker was not playing his best: His chops are weak, and his voice is strained and shallow. Still, these four duos, with longtime collaborator, guitarist Philip Catherine, have their rewards, such as the lengthy, substantial, and melodic solos by the guitarist. There is also the opportunity to hear Baker's piano playing at length. On piano, Chet Baker was even sparser than on trumpet, perhaps due to his weaker technique on the former. As with the trumpet, though, his choice of notes was always immaculate, and Baker fans will want this disc for the novelty of his piano playing. As far as his trumpet playing goes, there are much better examples of these tunes elsewhere, particularly of "My Foolish Heart" and "There'll Never Be Another You."

    Chetbakertribute.com:
    A clumsy recording of a Yugoslavian date where the bassist didn't show up. That left Baker and Catherine to stumble through over-long, meandering songs. Chet noodles around on the piano on a few cuts and Catherine is superb, as he usually is. Baker's vocal work on "My Foolish Heart" is pretty, and the sax gives the duo a fuller sound missing earlier. But that cut, like many others, overstays it welcome after about 6 minutes. Chet also plays drums on that track.

    Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet, vocals, piano, drums); Philip Catherine (guitar); Allan Praskin (alto sax)

    Tracks:
    01. Beatrice (14:57)
    02. There' ll Never Be Another You (10:19)

    Original Release Date: August 1958
    Label: Riverside/OJC

    Cduniverse.com:
    Few musicians were such a double threat as Chet Baker; he could blow a cool trumpet, and croon a lazy ballad or a bouncing standard with the best of them. His butter-smooth voice is featured here on his first session for Riverside, CHET BAKER SINGS IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU. Of course, the great old chestnut in the title is not the only gem contained herein--Baker also swings and sings such great Rogers and Hart songs as "Do It the Hard Way," My Heart Stood Still," and "Dancing on the Ceiling."

    Hearing the combination of Baker's lazy West Coast swing and the driving push of his East Coast sidemen on uptempo numbers like "You're Driving Me Crazy" or "My Heart Stood Still" is an undoubted treat, but it's smoky ballads such as "I'm Old Fashioned" and the swaying title track that win the most points. For lovers of great old songs sung with feeling, CHET BAKER SINGS IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU is hard to beat.

    Amazon reviewer:
    This CD showcases Chet Baker's vocal abilities at their peak. His trumpet solos are also exquisite. Kenny Drew's piano work is a textbook example of how to support a vocalist, adding instrumental spice without obstructing the singer, on par with Teddy Wilson's work with Billie Holiday. Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones function similarly, swinging solidly in support without disturbing the mood of each tune. They are replaced by George Morrow and Dannie Richmond on a few tracks without incident. The marriage of great performance with a selection of great jazz standards guarantees a tasty listening experience, seasoned with a touch of Chet's bittersweet wistfulness.

    Allaboutjazz.com:
    Chet Baker had a distinctive trumpet style that even Miles admired, but many may not know he was also quite accomplished as a singer. Judging by the cover (Baker’s good looks were always prominently featured on his releases), the A&R people at Riverside saw an opportunity to market Baker as a romantic crooner along the lines of Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole. This is surprising, considering his fragile, colorless vocals certainly don’t immediately call to mind someone who could sing at all. Nevertheless, Baker’s haunting vocal delivery remains one of the most underrated pleasures in jazz.

    Unlike the earlier Pacific releases, which featured Baker’s vocals and trumpet playing in equal measures, the 1958 record It Could Happen To You focuses mainly on vocals. Backed by a stellar East Coast rhythm section that glides over the changes like figure skaters (Drew in particular responds with delicate accompaniment), Baker delivers deeply moving renditions of standards. The best songs are ballads like “Everything Happens To Me” and “While My Lady Sleeps”, which are perfectly suited to Baker’s vulnerable delivery and are achingly beautiful, a soundtrack to rainy nights at home alone with a bottle of Scotch. The uptempo numbers feature more trumpet soloing and are charged with mellow phrasing and a keen sense of melody, demonstrating why Baker was admired by so many of his peers.

    Few singers also double on a horn, but Baker shows how successfully it could be done, blowing and singing both complementing each other as part of a compelling conception. Newly remastered, It Could Happen To You is clearly a vocal jazz classic.

    Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Kenny Drew (piano); George Morrow, Sam Jones (bass); Philly Joe Jones, Dannie Richmond (drums)

    Chetbakertribute.com:
    Perhaps this is Chet Baker's greatest recording. The fact that it was recorded less than one year before his death fuels the "what if" scenarios. Could Chet have continued to make great music like this on into the '90's? We'll never know, but we do know that Chet was in great shape that night in 1987. Chet plays wonderful, long solos on "My Funny Valentine" and "Arborway". The ballads are so moving and sincere, they'll send chills down your spine. But most of the album is upbeat and lively. You'll also hear some great piano work by the great, underrated Harold Danko. The concert was filmed for Japanese television and is available on DVD.

    Cduniverse.com:
    While Chet Baker was not known as an extraordinary technician (his best solos were memorable for their lyricism and melodic organization, not their speed or use of high range on the trumpet), he was a consummate improviser, capable of besting many of his contemporaries. This said, it's extraordinary how spry and technically proficient Baker's playing is here.

    Only one year before his death, the trumpeter plays with great confidence and poise. On tunes such as "For Minors Only," "Four," and "Seven Steps to Heaven," Baker proves that he--despite his drug addiction--can still play uptempo tunes as well as any of his generation. He also performs haunting versions of "My Funny Valentine" and the Elvis Costello ballad, "Almost Blue"; both compositions became trademarks for Baker, representing respectively the beginning and the end of his career. Most of all, though, his playing on this double CD makes this Chet Baker's best recorded live performance of the '80s.

    MP3 ~ 256kbps ~ Covers ~ RS.com ~ 85mb
    Recording Date: July 2, 1980
    Time: 48:24
    Format: Bootleg

    The Estival Jazz in Lugano was once called the "biggest" of Europe's small jazz festivals and is on the circuit of major international jazz festivals. The Estival Jazz unites world-famous names in Lugano (on the well-known Piazza Riforma) and its surroundings every year. There are more than 100 hours of the best there is in all fields of jazz - in the open-air and for free! This superbly recorded bootleg features Chet Baker in good form in his July 1980 appearance at the Estival, in a quintet of European jazz musicians. The highlight of the album is an excellent 16-minute rendition of 'Night Bird'.

    Chetbakertribute.com:
    Appropriately titled, as Chet was hot that night. The recording quality is average, you hear many hoots and hollers from the enthusiastic crowd, Chet's microphone doesn't work on the last tune, and he has to abandon his vocals mid-song, and the band can be heard bickering through a few tunes. But when Chet plays... Rarely have you heard him play with such fire and intensity. He blows loud, high and fast. The excitement of these performances overcome any flaws this recording may have.

    Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Drew Salperto (piano); Mike Formanek (bass); Artt Frank (drums)

    This one is a bit unusual since the trumpeter is accompanied by David Friedman (on vibes and marimba), bassist Buster Williams and drummer Joe Chambers. The music (which includes two takes of "Syzgies/3+1=5" on the re- issue Enja ENJ 1021) is somewhat challenging ("The Song Is You" is the only standard) and it inspires Baker to come up with some lyrical statements. There are many Chet Baker recordings from his final decade and his true fans will want to pick up this one.

    Allmusic.com:
    Chet Baker recorded many albums in Europe during his final decade. This hard-to-find LP matches his trumpet with pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Jean-Francois Jenny Clark and drummer Jeff Brillinger for a date in Paris. Chet sings on "Oh You Crazy Moon" and stretches out on trumpet during a fresh repertoire that includes "Broken Wing," Wayne Shorter's "Black Eyes," "How Deep Is the Ocean?" and Baker's own "Blue Gilles." Even with his chaotic lifestyle, most of Chet Baker's recordings are worth acquiring and Broken Wing is better than average.

    Trumpeter Chet Baker, accompanied by pianist Michel Graillier and bassist Jean Louis Rassinfosse, covers a lot of emotional ground on this European date. MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Cover, LP covers ~ RS.com ~ 88mb
    Recording Date: December 1953
    Release Date: September 2004
    Label: Blue Note

    AMG:
    Chet Baker Ensemble collects all the tracks recorded by trumpeter Chet Baker and his group on a session for Pacific Jazz in late December of 1953. Having been released piecemeal on various albums over the years, this represents the first complete gathering of this material. Recorded less than two months before the legendary Chet Baker Sings sessions, these tracks showcase the young Baker as a hardcore jazz trumpeter before the public became overwhelmingly infatuated with his unique vocal abilities. Featuring first-rate "West Coast"-style arrangements by tenor saxophonist Jack Montrose - who also composed many of the songs - the septet seems to combine the jocular interplay of Baker's work with saxophonist Gerry Mulligan with the hip, swinging work popularized by the large ensembles of trumpeter Shorty Rogers. Besides Montrose, backing Baker here are saxophonists Herb Geller and Bob Gordon, bassist Joe Mondragon, drummer Shelly Manne, and pianist Russ Freeman. Rating alongside the best of Baker's catalog, Chet Baker Ensemble is a must-hear for both longtime fans and neophytes of the iconic trumpeter/vocalist's work.

    Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Herb Geller (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Jack Montrose (tenor saxophone); Bob Gordon (baritone saxophone); Russ Freeman (piano); Joe Mondragon (double bass); Shelly Manne (drums)

    01. Bockhanal - Montrose (3:00)

    Chet Baker - Grey December (1953)

    MP3 ~ 192kbps ~ RS.com ~ 79mb ~ 5% File Recovery

    AMG:
    Two stray Chet Baker 10" titles and a few associated alternate takes are gathered on this single disc. Grey December is one of the better CD reissues featuring Baker's early-'50s recordings on Pacific Jazz, the purveyors of West Coast Cool. The instrumental sides feature two septet sessions in December of 1953 and the vocal sextet session dates to February of 1955 - all three of which feature Baker and pianist Russ Freeman. Rather than present these sides chronologically, the four vocal tracks precede the decidedly lengthier 1953 instrumental sessions - a programming decision that works remarkably well. Enthusiasts of Baker's laid-back vocals should consider the February 1955 sessions as essential.

    The combination of Bud Shank's ethereal flute work when married to Baker's muted vocals create an intense burst of melancholy. The uneven tempo and minor chord progressions featured on the title track as well as "I Wish I Knew" are irresistible in their appeal to fans of the enre. Baker's soft- toned trumpet solos match his vocals in spirit and passion. Even the hapless optimism of "Someone to Watch Over Me" is tinged in noir pathos. A much more traditional setting for Baker can be heard on the septet sides. Although the instinctual interaction between Baker and Freeman shines throughout, "Headline," "Moonlight Becomes You," and the up-tempo swinger "A Dandy Line" best exemplify everything positive about that musical relationship. The pair intertwine their melodies so closely and carefully it can be difficult to separate them. On the CD pressing, alternate takes of "Bockhanal," "A Dandy Line," "Little Old Lady," "Moonlight Becomes You," and "Goodbye" are also included.

    Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet and vocals); Russ Freeman (piano); Herb Geller (alto sax, tenor sax); Bob Gordon baritone sax); Corky Hale (harp); Shelly Manne (drums); Red Mitchell (bass); Joe Mondragon (bass); Jack Montrose (arranger, tenor sax); Bob Neel (drums); Bud Shank (flute)

    Tracks:

    Chet Baker - Live in New York (1958)

    Chet Baker could hang just as well as the cats back East, as he proves on the classic CHET BAKER IN NEW YORK. To quell the East vs. West debate, Baker joined New York all-stars like Johnny Griffin, Al Haig, and the Miles Davis rhythm team of Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones for a rousing session that is one for the history books. Listening to these seven standards, there's little doubt that this cross-pollination was a successful experiment.

    Baker, sticking to trumpet, sounds just as smooth and laid back as usual. From brisk numbers such as "Hotel 49" to blue ballads such as "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," the trumpeter always projects his cool image, only now with a subtle urging from his East Coast sidemen. Griffin is complimentary to the leader, and shines on tasty solo spots such as Benny Golson's swinging opener "Fair Weather." Chambers and Jones get a chance to record a very different take of Davis' classic "Solar," here featuring Baker's velvety wanderings at a mid-tempo lope. Other choice cuts in this experiment include the bouncing "When Lights Are Low" and Benny Goodman's lazily swinging "Soft Winds."

    Chet Baker's 1983 Swedish tour captures the trumpeter going through the motions -- extraordinary motions. The groove he got into in the 1980s in Europe found him performing excellent concert after excellent concert in places like Paris, Bologna and here in Gothenburg. Chet sings on My Ideal and But Not for Me and cooks up some compelling understated solos, too. To the casual fan this will sound like any old Chet Baker live record. For the aficionado it will reveal another facet of his sound and evolution, the tragic and the sublime.

    AMG:
    This CD features the trumpeter with his good friend tenor-saxophonist Phil Urso and pianist Dave MacKay in a quintet performing live in his hometown. The playing is excellent but the recording quality is a bit disappointing, making this potentially valuable set (a straight-ahead session performed at a time when Baker's studio recordings were very commercial) of greatest interest to Chet Baker completists.

    This is arguably Chet Baker's best recording for SteepleChase, and it's also one of the hardest to find. This recording is great because it is unlike most other Baker recordings. There are no standards here, only seven great Duke Jordan compositions. Also, Chet plays a rarely-heard muted trumpet on several cuts. It sounds like he had fun making this one, it's too bad Baker and Jordan didn't record together more often. It is strange that one of Chet's greatest albums has one of the worst pictures of him on the cover!

    AMG:
    Pianist Duke Jordan's presence adds some punch and spark to this quartet session, which is further helped along by bassist Niels Henning-Orsted Pedersen and selections that are suited for Baker's increasingly mellow and wavering playing.

    Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet, vocal); Norman Fearrington (drums); Duke Jordan (piano); Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass)

    Artists House, a classy if short-lived label, released this attractive Chet Baker LP, a quintet date with tenor-saxophonist Gregory Herbert, pianist Harold Danko, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Mel Lewis. The challenging material ("The Song Is You" is the only one of the five songs that is a standard) inspires the musicians to play creative solos. It is particularly interesting to hear Baker interpret the Wayne Shorter tune "ESP." This set has been reissued on CD in the OJC series.

    Cduniverse.com:
    Chet Baker recorded a lot of excellent music over the course of his lengthy career, but his late 1950s dates for Riverside rank among his finest. Baker was one of the few artists to truly transcend the "cool" style, creating with his restrained and delicate approach to the trumpet (and to his singing) some of the most lyrical, delicate, and emotionally powerful work in jazz. This 11-track compilation shouldn't take the place of Baker's studio albums of the time, but it's a wonderfully assembled introduction to the artist. "Look for the Silver Lining," "September Song," and "Almost Like Being in Love" are highlights, but every tune here is a gem. Included is a bonus compilation disc of other Riverside artists from the period, including Wes Montgomery, Charlie Byrd, and Thelonious Monk.

    Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Wes Montgomery (guitar); Herbie Mann (flute); Kenny Burrell, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans (piano); Pepper Adams, Paul Chambers, Cannonball Adderley Quartet.

    More pairings with the great Duke Jordan. It has none of the magic of 1979's No Problem, but there are some good moments. On September Song, Chet's sings a lot, tunes that he didn't usually sing, such at "But Beautiful" and the title cut. Baker blows loud and high on "Barbados", but overall, it's a pretty laid-back session. Recorded November 24, 25 & 28, 1983, Paris, France; Lauwe, Belgium & Arnhem, Holland.

    Chet Baker - Stairway to the Stars (1965)

    MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ RS.com ~ 165mb ~ Covers & Scans ~ 5% File Recovery
    Audio CD: September 3, 1996
    Original Recording Date: August 23-25, 1965
    Tracks: 11
    Time: 66:26
    Label: Prestige

    Allmusic.com:
    During a three-day period in 1965, trumpeter Chet Baker (who during the era was exclusively playing flugelhorn) recorded five albums for Prestige that were soon forgotten, despite their quality. In 1997, the entire program was reissued on three CDs (which also include Lonely Star and On a Misty Night), showing that Baker was in excellent form at the time. Chet is teamed with tenor saxophonist George Coleman, pianist Kirk Lightsey (in top form), bassist Herman Wright and drummer Roy Brooks; the one-time gathering group on the whole sometimes recalls the Miles Davis Quintet of 1956. There are some occasional missteps (Baker gets a bit lost during the rapid rendition of "Cherokee" that opens this CD), but overall, the music (some light swingers and a few more heated tracks) is quite rewarding. Producer Richard Carpenter (Baker's manager at the time and best known for writing "Walkin'") contributed three songs to this set (and 13 others to the other two CDs), which also includes three jazz standards, a few obscurities, and three Tadd Dameron originals. Enjoyable straight-ahead music.

    Personnel: Chet Baker (flugelhorn); George Coleman (tenor saxophone); Kirk Lightsey (piano); Herman Wright (bass); Roy Brooks (drums)

    Tracks:
    01. Cherokee (Ray Noble) 6:56

    The minimalist setting is perfect for this collection of pretty tunes. Chet's playing is inspired and almost flawless, and Doug Raney adds some great solos. This same trio would later record the famous October 4, 1979 concert that spawned 3 great SteepleChase CD's. -- (the Montmartre set, posted elsewhere in the discography)...

    Amazon reviewer 'melodius' (Brussels, Belgium):
    I have to confess I never cared much for Chet Baker, mostly because I had an image of him doing the same thing over and over again. This 1979 recording, however, made me change my mind. Not that Chet does anything surprising, mind you: it's exactly the kind of quiet and romantic music you'd expect from him. But how well does he do it ! Although Chet never leaves the middle register of the trumpet, his improvisations are lyrical and well-built and his singing, well, let's say it's a perfect complement to his trumpet playing! The sidemen, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (bass) and Doug Raney (guitar) serve Chet perfectly and contribute some very tasteful solos of their own. Finally, the recording quality and the mix are perfect, at least to my ears. My conclusion: I guess Chet Baker wasn't so boring after all...

    Time: 56:29

    EnjaRecords.com:
    This disc documents a ten-year-long musical friendship between Chet Baker (1929-1988), the legendary American trumpet player, and Wolfgang Lackerschmid, a German vibraphone player and composer. They met for the first time in 1978 and went into the studio to do a duet recording the following year. Another studio date followed in late 1979, this time with a quintet including Larry Coryell, Buster Williams and Tony Williams. Over the years, Chet and Lacky were touring all over Europe and recorded again in 1987, only a few months before Chet's death.

    Musically, it was a very special cooperation. Chet was fond of Lacky's compositions such as Five Years Ago, Balzwaltz or Why Shouldn't You Cry, and loved to perform them in concert. "Chet was the best interpreter of my tunes," Lacky remembers, "and even asked me for new material. Without needing any instructions, he always played my tunes as I wanted them to be played. I had often listened to his records before, so maybe I had his sound in mind when I wrote these tunes." Not only the tunes but also the original combination of trumpet and vibes helped to create a context for Chet's trumpet that will be new and surprising for many of his fans. Needless to say, Chet marvellously answered the challenge and had some of his most brilliant moments when recording with Lacky.

    This CD ends with Chet's Ballad, a vocal version of Why Shouldn't You Cry recorded five years after Chet's death by a New York all-star band. It features alto sax player Lee Konitz and singer Lillias White in a moving homage to Chet Baker's musical spirit. This is the third volume of the successful THE CHET BAKER LEGACY co-produced by CCB (Chet & Carol Baker Productions) and ENJA RECORDS.

    Allmusic.com:
    Due to the loss of his teeth in a fight and health difficulties from heroin addiction, Chet Baker's later career recordings are often rough rehashings of his earlier successes. Many of the trumpeter/vocalist's posthumous releases merely restate his unique gift for lyricism and, as such, probably don't garner him any new fans. Not so here. Of the myriad recordings printed after his death, few color Baker's career as vividly and deeply as Why Shouldn't You Cry. Detailing a musical relationship with vibraphonist Wolfgang Lackerschmid between 1978 and 1988, the album is a haunting, ambient collection of original compositions by Lackerschmid - barring an arresting version of Baker's signature standard "You Don't Know What Love Is." Originally envisioned as a duet project, this collection includes performances and songs by guitarist Larry Coryell and bassist Buster Williams with accompaniment by guitarist Nicola Stilo and drummer Tony Williams. The spare group setting and unusual combination of trumpet and vibes allows Baker to free up his often conservative playing. Lackerschmid, no stranger to the atonal mayhem of free jazz, plays with a soft, deft harmonic touch. Together, the duo creates vast clouds of harmony. This is particularly true on the ballad "Five Years Ago," where Lackerschmid utilizes ghostly volume swells to backlight Baker's pointillist trumpet lines. Another standout track is "Chet's Ballad," a vocal version of "Why Shouldn't You Cry" recorded after the artist's death with vocalist Lillias White featuring Baker's old cool jazz buddy alto saxophonist Lee Konitz A fitting tribute on an album that truly showcases Baker's sanguine musical genius.

    Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet, vocal); Wolfgang Lackerschmid (vibes, marimba)
    Guests: Larry Coryell, guitar; Tony Williams, drums; Nicola Stilo, guitar; Lillias White, vocal; Donald Johnston, piano; Ron McClure, bass; Buster Williams, bass; Günter Lenz, bass; Jeff Hirshfield, drums; Lee Konitz, alto sax

    Cduniverse.com:
    This 1995 release brings some Chet Baker rarities to CD for the first time while commemorating photographer William Claxton's eponymous book. Representing the jazz legend in his early years, the selections heard on YOUNG CHET are taken from two recording dates, the first in 1954, and the second two years later. Baker was 25 and 27 years old respectively. This reissue is testament to Chet Baker's innate talent for music, including his ability to play trumpet with great lyrical insight and conceptual maturity. Always dedicated to reviving obscure tunes, he breathes new life into Kai Winding's 1949 composition, "A Night on Bop Mountain," employing the talents of Bill Loughborough on a percussion instrument known alternatively as the chromatic tympani or boobams. Baker also performs a light and airy version of Miles Davis' 1951 blues, "Down." An especially lively piano solo from Bobby Timmons marks the latter, while the trumpeter himself plays with an unerring melodic shrewdness.

    AMG:
    This 45-minute disc of primordial Chet Baker rarities shares its name with a companion volume of William Claxton's timeless photographs. The book visually preserves Baker and company during many of the same recording sessions heard on this release. The two presented here - produced by Dick Bock in Los Angeles during the early to mid-'50s - are the subject of some debate. The first date was originally recorded with the intent for Baker to add lead vocals, which he ultimately did. However, to get the most mileage out of the tapes, producer Bock re-released the same recordings three years later on the Pretty/Groovy album as instrumentals by substituting Baker's vocals with a lead tenor sax, performed by Bill Perkins. The recordings did retain Baker's irreplaceable trumpet licks in a somewhat feeble attempt to create the sense of interaction between the two. "But Not for Me," "Time After Time," and "Look for the Silver Lining" are among the titles given this unusual treatment, which is ultimately pulled off and works far better than one might imagine. The second session contains tracks from the July 1956 L.A. Forum Theater sessions that would yield the landmark Chet Baker and Crew album. Although a majority of the material from those three dates was issued in various formats, the seven tracks featured on Young Chet remained shelved for nearly half a century because no stereo masters could be located. They are presented here in monophonic no worse for wear. Highlights featuring Baker include "A Night on Bop Mountain" and "Taboo." However, as was Bock's methodology at the time, he would often cut additional sides using only the backing band. "It's Only a Paper Moon" and "Autumn in New York" are among the tracks included on this Chet Baker title which do not feature Baker at all. Young Chet is a great recording, but recommended only for consumers actively searching every shred of music that is in any way connected to Chet Baker.

    Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Bill Perkins, Phil Urso (tenor saxophone); Jimmy Giuffre (clarinet); Russ Freeman, Bobby Timmons (piano); Jimmy Bond, Carson Smith (bass); Bob Neel, Peter Littman (drums); Bill Loughborough (chromatic tympani)

    Chet Baker & Art Pepper - Picture of Heath

    [aka Playboys] (1956)

    Recording Date: Oct 31, 1956

    Picture of Heath - recorded in 1956 as Playboys, then forced into a title change (Hugh Hefner threatened to sue) - finds Pepper teamed with trumpeter Chet Baker, and it's one of those 'West Coast' jazz recordings that you sit back and let hit you like an ocean wave; up-tempo, fleet- fingered, straight-ahead, and swinging-till-you-drop. The artists make an appealing pair. Baker blows his trumpet with a piercing zest that will startle those who know only his warmed-over Miles-styled balladry. Pepper drapes a smooth, gorgeous tone over a jagged cadence and rhythm - holding a note for a bit too long, then jumping and zigzagging to catch up - and the tension practically crackles. -- Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, March 2006

    Review by Lindsay Planer:
    These Halloween 1956 sides originally appeared as Playboys in 1961 on Pacific Jazz. Myth and rumor persist that, under legal advice from the publisher of a similarly named magazine, the collection would have to be retitled. When the CD version of the same material was issued in the early '90s, it had been accurately christened Picture of Heath - as more than half of the tracks are Jimmy Heath compositions. Since then, a CD version sporting the original provocative '50s pinup cover and the name Playboys has also surfaced. Regardless of title, however, the music is the absolute same. These are the third sessions to feature the dynamic duo of Art Pepper (alto sax) and Chet Baker (trumpet). Their other two meetings had produced unequivocal successes. The first was during a brief July 1956 session at the Forum Theater in L.A. Baker joined forces with Pepper's sextet, ultimately netting material for the disc Route. Exactly three months to the day later, Pepper and Baker reconvened to record tracks for the Chet Baker Big Band album. The quartet supporting Baker and Pepper on Playboys includes Curtis Counce (bass), Phil Urso (tenor sax), Carl Perkins (piano), and Larance Marable (drums). Baker and Pepper have an instinctual rapport that yields outstanding interplay. The harmony constant throughout the practically inseparable lines that Baker weaves with Pepper drives the bop throughout the slinky "For Minors Only." The soloists take subtle cues directly off each other, with considerable contributions from Perkins, Counce, and Marable. With the notorious track record both Baker and Pepper had regarding other decidedly less successful duets, it is unfortunate that more recordings do not exist that captured their special bond. These thoroughly enjoyable and often high- energy sides are perfect for bop connoisseurs as well as mainstream jazz listeners.

    In mid-1955 Chet Baker seemed poised for stardom, with his movie-star looks and highly accessible style. He was winning jazz polls (which embarrassed him a bit since Dizzy Gillespie was at the peak of his powers) and attracting large audiences. Even Hollywood was interested, and Baker appeared in the low-budget film 'Hell's Horizon', with more major roles promised in the future. But things would not turn out quite as expected.

    Baker sailed for Europe in September 1955, staying till the following April. His quartet for the tour started out featuring pianist Richard Twardzik, bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Peter Littman. Twardzik was a talented bop-based pianist with a potentially bright future. In 1951, he had played in Boston with Charlie Parker. He worked along the way with Charlie Mariano and Lionel Hampton, and recorded half a Pacific Jazz album, which he shared with Russ Freeman, 'Russ Freeman/Richard Twardzik Trio' (Capitol 46861). That enjoyable bop set contrasts the two complementary Baker-associated pianists, both of whom were making their debuts as leaders.

    Chet Baker in Paris Vol. 1 (EmArcy 837474) has the trumpeter's quartet featured on nine numbers on October 11 and includes some of the best examples of Twardzik on record. It was also his last recordings for, on October 21, the pianist died of an overdose of heroin at the age of 24. One would think that Baker would learn from the tragedy (along with the example of Gerry Mulligan), but unfortunately it had no effect on the decisions he would soon make with his life. The remainder of this CD has four selections with a sextet on October 25, including a song called "In Memory of Dick".

    Chet Baker in Paris Vol. 2 (EmArcy 837475) teams Baker with two mostly French rhythm sections. Chet Baker in Paris Vol. 3 (EmArcy 837476) reaches up to March 15, 1956, and has Baker sharing the spotlight with the superb Belgian tenor saxophonist Bobby Jaspar in a quintet, jamming with tenorman Jean-Louis Chautemps and pianist Francy Boland in another group, and concluding his European trip with an excellent octet date. Chet Baker in Paris Vol. 4 (EmArcy 837477) is mostly for completists as it consists of alternate takes from four of the sessions. Throughout the discs, Baker is heard at his playing prime (there are no vocals) and he shows why he was rated so high during the period. And with 13 CDs of material recorded as a leader during 1953-early 1956, Baker was (next to Louis Armstrong) clearly the most popular trumpeter in jazz.

    All 4 of these volumes are currently out of print, but an 8-disc set has just been released in 2008 with even more alternate takes.

    Chet Baker & Paul Desmond - Together - The Complete Studio Recordings (1977)

    Audio CD: 1992
    Original Recording Date: Jul 17, 1974-Feb 1977
    Time: 56:13
    Label: Epic/Sony

    AMG:
    This lovely compilation taken from dates recorded in the mid-1970s presents two of jazzdom's great lyricists - the incomparable trumpeter, Chet Baker and the equally incomparable alto saxophonist, Paul Desmond. Both of the principals play superbly. Each note counts. For Desmond, the 1977 tracks - "You Can't Go Home Again," "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You," "You've Changed" and "How Deep Is The Ocean?" - were, with the exception of a cameo on an Art Garfunkel date, his last recordings. Along with "Tangerine" and "Autumn Leaves," there's also the impressive Don Sebesky arrangement of Joaguin Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjueza," with guitarist Jim Hall, pianist Roland Hanna, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Steve Gadd.

    Amazon:
    By the time the two men came together in 1977, Che Baker was prematurely aged by the hard life he'd lived in the underworld of narcotics. He was badly beaten by gangsters in 1968 and lost most of his teeth. He had to give up the trumpet for some time and worked as a petrol station attendant. The delightful Paul Desmond was a gifted and humorous man whose only apparent failing was his inability to stay in one place for more than one night because he believed that a jealous husband was pursuing him around the world to kill him while he was on tour. The tracks here were recorded at two sessions in 1974 and 1977: "You Can't Come Home Again" is Desmond's last ever recording. It's interesting to hear the two men responding so well to the disciplined settings provided for them by CTI, the original record company. Both play with poise and relaxation and each produces some of his best work. This is essentially a poignant album full of good improvising on imaginatively chosen themes ("Concierto de Aranjuez"!) and despite the tendency of Bob James's electronic piano to tinkle, it doesn't interfere. James is only on two tracks, being replaced on the other five by Kenny Barron and Roland Hanna. Anyone who has this album will play it often.

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (trumpet);
    Paul Desmond (alto sax);
    Jim Hall (guitar);
    Roland Hanna (piano);
    Bob James (piano - electronic);
    Ron Carter (bass);
    Steve Gadd & Tony Williams (drums)

    03. How Deep Is The Ocean (5:41)
    04. You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To (7:03)

    Chet Baker - She Was Too Good To Me (1974)

    MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers & Scans ~ RS.com ~ 90mb
    Audio CD: October 25, 1990
    Recording Date: July 17 - Nov 1, 1974
    Time: 30:28
    Label: Columbia / CTI

    AMG:
    Baker began his comeback after five years of musical inactivity with this excellent CTI date. Highlights include "Autumn Leaves," "Tangerine," and "With a Song in My Heart." Altoist Paul Desmond is a major asset on two songs and the occasional strings give variety to this fine session.

    Cduniverse.com:
    The 1960's saw Chet Baker living in Europe, in the shadows of the American jazz scene. By 1970, he had stopped making music altogether. Coping with a terrible heroin addiction, Baker found himself in a slump that almost cost him his life. However, by 1974, he had made a comeback with SHE WAS TOO GOOD TO ME, an album that speaks volumes for his ability to fight the odds. Here he sings and plays trumpet with the musical sagacity of a jazz elder, and while his technical abilities fall short of his 1950's recordings, his lyricism is thoughtful and refined.

    Truly one of Baker's finest efforts, SHE WAS TOO GOOD TO ME features a large ensemble including smart string arrangements on the title track and "What'll I Do." "She Was Too Good to Me" is arguably Baker's greatest vocal performance on record. His lush, boyish voice is laced with deep sorrow as he contemplates his bittersweet past. "It's only natural I'm so blue," he croons in an almost whisper; this song truly makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet);
    Paul Desmond (alto saxophone);

    Chet Baker - The Best of Chet Baker Sings (1989)

    MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ RS.com ~ 158mb
    Recording Date: Oct 27, 1953-Jul 30, 1956
    Release: 1989
    Time: 64:16
    Label: Capitol

    AMG:
    To much of the pop (as opposed to the jazz) audience, Chet Baker was known not as an able cool jazz trumpeter, but as a romantic balladeer. The two classifications were not mutually exclusive; Baker's vocal numbers would also feature his trumpet playing, as well as fine instrumental support from West Coast cool jazzers. For those who prefer the vocal side of the Baker canon, this is an excellent compilation of his best vintage material in that mode. The 20 tracks draw from sessions covering the era when he was generally conceded to be at his vocal peak (1953-1956), and are dominated by standards from the likes of Rodgers & Hart, Carmichael, Gershwin, and Kern. Baker's singing was white and naïve in the best senses, with a quavering, uncertain earnestness that embodied a certain (safe) strain of mid-'50s bohemianism. That's the Baker heard on this collection, which contains some his most famous interpretations, including "My Funny Valentine," "Time After Time," "There Will Never Be Another You," and "Let's Get Lost."

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet);
    Russ Freeman (piano);

    Stan Getz & Chet Baker - Line For Lyons (1983)

    MP3 ~ 256kbps ~ Covers ~ RS.com ~ 93mb
    Audio CD: November 18, 1995
    Recording Date: February 18, 1983 - Stockholm, Sweden
    Label: Sonet / Gazell Records

    AMG:
    This album found trumpeter Chet Baker guesting with Stan Getz's 1983 quartet (which also included pianist Jim McNeely, bassist George Mraz and drummer Victor Lewis). Although Getz and Baker ended up not getting along very well personally, their cool-toned musical personalities fit together perfectly as can be heard on a brief duet version of "Line for Lyons." The remainder of the set finds them successfully revisiting six standards from the 1950s, making one wish it had not been 25 years since their last collaboration.

    (According to promoter Wim Wigt, from the start of the tour Getz made no secret of his disdain for Baker, especially his singing. "[He] was like a spoiled child and he was very insecure," Wigt told British jazz writer Mike Hennessey. "He was jealous of the success that Chet was enjoying." And as Hennessey adds, the relationship was aggravated by "what might be described as a conflict of addictions. Getz at this time was drinking heavily and Baker was using heroin. Says McNeeley, 'Stan had a real attitude about Chet's using drugs. Perhaps if they had both been doing the same substance they might have got along better together'." Stan, he added, tried to turn the rhythm section against Baker. When that failed, the tenorman gave Wigt a he-goes-or-I-go ultimatum. "So I paid Chet off, which was a great shame because he had been playing superbly every night," Wigt remembers with regret.)

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (trumpet);
    Stan Getz (tenor sax);
    Jim McNeely (piano);
    George Mraz (bass);
    Victor Lewis (drums)

    Chet Baker And The Lighthouse All-Stars - Witch Doctor [Live] (1953)

    MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers & Scans ~ RS.com ~ 97mb
    Total Time: 42:00
    Label: Contemporary

    Allmusic.com:
    Recorded live at the famous ~Lighthouse club in Hermosa Beach, CA, and reissued on CD in 1991, this disc finds Baker playing well, if not very consistently, and features a shifting group behind him that includes, on various tracks, saxophonists Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, and Jimmy Giuffre; pianists Russ Freeman and the underrated Claude Williamson; Lighthouse fixture Howard Rumsey on bass; and drummers Max Roach and Shelly Manne. The sound quality is fair and the playing occasionally gets a little bit sloppy -- Baker's solo work on "Pirouette" is especially dodgy -- but there are some moments of real inspiration, including the band' s boppish up-tempo reading of "Winter Wonderland" and Manne's inventive percussion on the Latin-flavored Cooper composition "Witch Doctor." There are better introductions to the Lighthouse sound, but this album is sure to please Chet Baker fans.

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (trumpet);
    Bud Shank (alto & baritone saxophones);
    Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Cooper (tenor saxophone);
    Rolf Ericson (trumpet);
    Russ Freeman, Claude Williamson (piano);
    Howard Rumsey (bass);
    Max Roach, Shelly Manne (drums).

    Chet Baker Trio - Live In Montmartre Vol.1 - Daybreak (1979)

    MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ RS.com ~ 107mb ~ Covers
    Audio CD: March 28, 1995
    Recording Date: October 4, 1979
    Time: 48:01
    Label: Steeplechase

    AMG:
    This follow-up to The Touch of Your Lips also has the trumpeter/vocalist joined by guitarist Doug Raney and bassist Niels Pedersen but differs in that the repertoire (Jimmy Heath's "For Minor's Only," Hoagy Carmichael's "Daybreak," Richard Beirach's "Broken Wing" and Miles Davis's "Down") avoids standards in favor of lesser-known pieces. Baker is in fine form stretching out on these six- to eleven-minute performances.

    Chetbakertribute.com:
    On October 4, 1979 Chet Baker played an excellent gig in Copenhagen. From that concert, Steeplechase issued these 3 CD's of over 2 1/2 hours of music. The tunes are somewhat livelier than The Touch of Your Lips recorded by the same group months earlier. Volume 1 opens with "For Minor's Only", and you know you in for a good show when Chet makes those first few notes that he so often cracked. There are a few moments where Chet seems to loose a little steam, and he has trouble hitting a few notes (a lot of notes on "You Can't Go Home Again"). However, overall, these recordings are some of Chet's finest work

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (trumpet, vocals);
    Doug Raney (guitar);
    Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass)

    Tracks:

    01. For Minors Only (J.Heath) 6:28

    Chet Baker Trio Live in Montmartre, Vol. 2: This Is Always (1979)

    Audio CD: July 29, 1994
    Original Release Date: October 4, 1979
    Time: 48:49
    Format: Live
    Label: Steeplechase

    Much of his final decade was spent in Europe, often working with a trio completed by guitar and bass. Always in need of money to support his addictions, and still widely popular, Baker became one of the most voluminously documented jazz artists in history during the 1980s. This Is Always is yet another of the important Steeplechase-label recordings from Chet Baker's time on the Continent.

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (trumpet, vocals);
    Doug Raney (guitar);
    Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass)

However, overall, these recordings are some of Chet's finest work. Highlights include a cool, breezy "How Deep is the Ocean" and "House of Jade", a Wayne Shorter tune that Chet recorded only a few times. Volume 3 has an unusual piece called "Love Vibrations". Chet blows some rapid-fire solos on that one. The gig also includes the usual all-to-familiar tunes, "Love for Sale" and "This is Always". The latter is highlighted by Chet's sweet solo in the middle that sets it apart from his many other renditions of this song.

    Chet Baker Quartet - Live at the Subway Club - Vol. 1 (In Your Own Sweet Way) (1980)

    MP3 ~ 224kbps VBR ~ Covers ~ RS.com ~ 100mb
    Recorded March 22nd 1980 at The Subway Club, Cologne (Köln, Germany)
    Time: 59:35
    Label : Circle Records [Circle (G) RK 22380/26)]

    AMG:
    Trumpeter Chet Baker often played quite well during his final decade, and he was in good form for a gig in Cologne, Germany, on March 22, 1980, which resulted in three LPs. However, the length of the three selections on this CD reissue does result in some coasting along the way. Baker, who is joined by pianist Dennis Luxion, bassist Ricard del Fra, and flutist Nicola Stilo (whatever happened to her?), performs versions of "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "Old Devil Moon" that clock in around 16 minutes apiece, plus a 27-minute rendition of Russ Freeman's "No Ties." The playing is good, but, considering how many Baker CDs are currently in print, the results fall short of essential.

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (trumpet, vocals);
    Dennis Luxion (piano);
    Nicola Stilo (flute);
    Riccardo del Fra (bass)

    Tracks:

    01. Intro By Chet Baker (0:34)
    02. No Ties (27:02)

    AMG:
    The second of three albums that Chet Baker recorded one night at the Subway club in Cologne, Germany, has the original two numbers from the LP (a 22-and-a-half-minute version of Horace Silver's "Doodlin'" and a 24- and-a-half-minute run-through on "Just Friends") with a 15-minute "Night Bird" that was previously unreleased before the CD reissue. As with volume one, Baker is assisted by flutist Nicola Stilo, pianist Dennis Luxion, and bassist Ricardo del Fra, fine local musicians. The playing is solid even if the performances sometimes go on a bit too long; Baker is in good form throughout.

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (trumpet, vocals);
    Dennis Luxion (piano);
    Nicola Stilo (flute);

    The third CD released from the set recorded by Chet Baker that night at the Subway club in Cologne, Germany, is referred to as 'The Lost Tracks', as these two long numbers were not included on the "official" two-CD release. Here we have the extended Russ Freeman composition 'An Afternoon at Home', and a twenty-minute 'Down'.

    Stan Getz & Chet Baker - Stan Meets Chet (1958)

    Vervemusicgroup.com:
    The pairing of Stan Getz and Chet Baker in 1958 in Chicago for an LP seemed like such a natural thing - both being golden boys enjoying their heydays with lyrically clean, brilliant solo styles. So it is odd that they teamed up in the studio only one other time, twenty-five years later, in their long careers. Which makes this a summit meeting to savor - and a long out-of-print LP to welcome back.

    Their playing on "I'll Remember April" is a study in contrasts: Getz's long lines against Baker's shorter phrases. Baker delivers his best solo here, keeping to a medium tempo, while Getz gives his all on his curiously named adaptation of "Cherokee", which he cranks up to a furious tempo. The proceedings are fueled throughout by a solid Chicago rhythm section rarely heard on Verve.

    Personnel:
    Stan Getz (tenor saxophone);
    Chet Baker (trumpet);
    Jodie Christian (piano);
    Victor Sproles (bass);
    Marshall Thompson (drums)

    Chet Baker - Boppin' with the Chet Baker Quintet (1965)

    MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ RS.com ~ 82mb ~ Cover
    Audio CD: August 13, 2002
    Recording Date: Aug 23, 1965-Aug 25, 1965
    Label: Prestige

    In 1964, trumpeter Chet Baker returned to the United States after five sometimes-traumatic years spent overseas (which included a long stay in an Italian jail for drug abuse). Baker recorded prolifically during his first 14 months back in the States, including a set for Colpix, two records for Limelight, and, in a busy three-day period, five albums for Prestige titled Groovin' , Comin' On, Cool Burnin', Smokin', and Boppin' With the Chet Baker Quintet. The Prestige sets have been long overlooked and only partially reissued in the past, but in 1997 they reappeared as three CDs. Teamed up with tenorman George Coleman (fresh from his notable period with Miles Davis), the young pianist Kirk Lightsey (who sometimes takes solo honors), and the supportive bass-drums team of Herman Wright and Roy Brooks, Baker (sticking exclusively to flugelhorn) is heard throughout in top form. Although his cool style was very much intact (sometimes hinting strongly at both Miles Davis and Shorty Rogers), Baker also plays with surprising fire in spots.

    Chetbakertribute.com:
    For 3 amazing days in August, 1965, Chet laid down 32 tracks for Prestige. He's backed by an experienced band featuring George Coleman (who played in Miles Davis' band) on Tenor Sax. Baker does surprising well, considering he's working with unfamiliar musicians and mostly original material, lots of hard-bop tunes penned by Richard Carpenter and Tadd Dameron. The LP titles and art work were a blatant rip-off of similarly-packaged Miles Davis recordings, such as Walkin' and Workin'. This would Chet's last great studio work until with 1974 comeback.

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (trumpet, flugelhorn);
    George Coleman (tenor sax);
    Kirk Lightsey (piano);
    Herman Wright (bass);
    Roy Brooks (drums)

    Gerry Mulligan Quartet - Reunion With Chet Baker (1957)

    Label: Pacific Jazz / EMI-Manhattan

    AMG:
    The Gerry Mulligan Quartet of 1952-53 was one of the best-loved jazz groups of the decade and it made stars out of both the leader and trumpeter Chet Baker. Mulligan and Baker had very few reunions after 1953 but this particular CD from 1957 is an exception. Although not quite possessing the magic of the earlier group, the music is quite enjoyable and the interplay between the two horns is still special. With expert backup by bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Dave Bailey, these 13 selections (plus two new alternate takes) should please fans of both Mulligan and Baker.

    Personnel:
    Gerry Mulligan (baritone sax);
    Chet Baker (trumpet);
    Henry Grimes (bass);
    Dave Bailey (drums)

    Chet Baker - Sings, Plays, Live At The Keystone Korner (1978)

    MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ RS.com ~ 118mb ~ Cover
    Audio CD: May 13, 2003
    Recording Date: February 12, 1978, The Keystone Korner, San Francisco
    Tracks: 4
    Time: 51:25
    Label: Highnote

    Chetbakertribute:
    This sub-par concert from 1978 was released commercially for the first time in 2003. Just as on The Rising Sun Collection, Roger Rosenberg's boisterous sax does nothing to complement Chet's style. "Broken Wing" starts as a duet with Chet (on Flugelhorn?!) and Rosenberg, and it looses the quiet, melancholy texture we associate with that tune. On "Blue n' Boogie", Chet disappears after the opening bars, only to reappear in the middle of the tune with nothing to contribute.

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (vocals, flugelhorn);
    Roger Rosenberg (soprano & baritone saxophones);
    Phil Markowitz (piano);
    Jeff Brillinger (drums);
    Jon Burr (bass);
    Unknown (tenor sax on 3, 4)

    Tracks:

    01. But Not For Me (9:59)
    02. Broken Wing (8:36)

    Chet Baker - Chet Baker Sextet (1957)

    MP3 ~ 224Kbps ~ RS.com ~ 76mb
    Genre: Jazz

    Allmusic.com:
    Chet Baker Sextet features tracks recorded by trumpeter Chet Baker in 1954 and 1957 for the Pacific Jazz label and released over the years on various albums, including the original Playboys date. These are stellar "West Coast"-style tracks reminiscent of the small group work Baker did with saxophonist Jerry Mulligan and featuring first class arrangements by Jack Montrose and Bob Zieff. However, the Zieff cuts feature an unusual for the period chamber-style group with French horn, bassoon, cello, bass clarinet, and bass. The result was softly angular and very modern for the time. Interestingly most of the tracks have remained largely unavailable until this collection. While there are far more influential Baker albums from the '50s, Sextet is a beautiful album and a must-hear for Baker aficionados.

    Cduniverse.com:
    One of the best non-vocal Chet Baker albums, this outing features the artist in two sextet settings. The first (tracks 1-8) augments the piano/bass/drums backing group with valve trombone and baritone sax, while the second (tracks 9-12) adds French horn, bass clarinet, bassoon, and cello to Baker's trumpet, dispensing with piano and drums. The first set moves along smoothly in a manner of the West Coast "cool" jazz of the time (which brought a detached, restrained air to the intensity of traditional bop). Fine arranging from Jack Montrose, Johnny Mandel, and Bill Holman keeps the ensemble parts clean and well balanced, and each player solos with poise and technical prowess. Baker's classic style is in ample evidence throughout--note the definitive rendition of "Stella by Starlight" here.

    However, the second sextet's tracks--culled from a session once believed lost--really surprise. Featuring tunes written and arranged by Bob Zieff, the swinging--but somehow stately--songs here are unique. The lack of drums gives the music a very distinctive chamber-music aspect that was quite unusual for the time in a jazz context. The results are intimate, atmospheric, startling, and quite beautiful; these tunes alone make the set worthy of attention.

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (trumpet);
    Seymour Barab (cello);
    Gene Allen (bass clarinet);
    Bob Tricarico (bassoon);
    Bud Shank (baritone saxophone);
    Jimmy Buffington (French horn);
    Bob Brookmeyer (valve trombone);
    Russ Freeman (piano);
    Russ Savakus, Carson Smith (double bass);

    Chet Baker - I Remember You (The Legacy, Volume 2) (1985)

    MP3 ~ 320Kbps ~ RS.com ~ 144mb
    Genre: Jazz / cool, West Coast
    Original Recording Date: February 28,1985
    Tracks: 5
    Time: 60:21
    Label: Enja (ENJ-9077 2)

    Enjarecords.com:
    Following the success of last year's release "The Legacy", the second volume of this series presents a previously unreleased live performance at one of Chet Baker's favorite venues, legendary Café Montmartre in Copenhagen. The club was crowded with enthusiastic jazz lovers when Baker's quartet entered the bandstand on February 28, 1985. A Danish jazz afficionado, William Dessau, got Baker's permission to record the concert which preserved this intimate and honest performance for CD release.

    That night in 1985 Chet Baker felt completely at ease with his versatile sidemen and reached the top of his artistry. Although he had played these tunes many times before, he still made them sound fresh and new, allowing the listeners to get very close to him. The recording catches Chet's unique lyricism not only on trumpet and as a singer, but is also one of the rare occasions on which he plays the piano. Just because he was not really a pianist, his piano playing gives you the essence of his artistic attitudes in its purest form - the way he was thinking musically. This extraordinary release is another co-production of CCB (Chet & Carol Baker Productions) and ENJA Records.

    Chet Baker - The Italian Sessions (1962)

    MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers ~ RS.com ~ 130mb
    Genre: Jazz / cool, West Coast
    Audio CD: October 15, 1996
    Recording Date: March, 1962
    Type: Compilation
    Time: 54:48
    Label: Bluebird/RCA

    Amazon reviewer:
    The 1960's are often considered the low point of Chet Baker's rocky career, but this album recorded in 1962 is undoubtedly one of the finest efforts of his early playing. Baker is aided and abetted by American tenorman and flutist Bobby Jaspar and propelled by the exhuberant Daniel Humair, Europe's answer to the sensational hard bop drummer Philly Joe Jones. Although Chet is primarily known as an interpreter of wispy ballads and standards, he stands out on this set as an advanced, aggressive be-bop improviser. His playing on the Thelonious Monk classic "Well, You Needn't" and high-speed romp through "Pent-Up House" are two of the best versions of these tunes ever recorded, and he excels on Charlie Parker's "Barbados". Also worth mentioning is "Blues In The Closet", unusual in the sense that Chet did not record many good interpretations of tunes based on blues changes.

    Although there is no singing here, Chet's unusually focused command and skilled playing make this album a must-have for fans of Chet's trumpet playing. If you are a traditional be-bop/hard bop fan who has never approached Chet Baker, give this album a try.

    AMG:
    Throughout the 1950s Chet Baker gained fame as a quiet, low-register trumpeter with a cool tone and a relaxed style. This CD should therefore be a major surprise to listeners who believe he was incapable of playing heated material, or of utilizing the upper register of his horn. Assisted by a fine European sextet (including Bobby Jaspar on tenor and flute and guitarist Rene Thomas), Baker is heard in peak form throughout this memorable and frequently exciting bop date. [Originally issued as Chet Is Back!.]

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker (trumpet)
    Bobby Jaspar (flute, tenor sax)
    Amadeo Tommasi (piano)
    Rene Thomas (guitar)
    Daniel Humair (drums)

    Chet Baker - Blues For A Reason (1984)

    MP3 ~ 192kbps ~ Cover ~ RS.com ~ 82mb
    Genre: Jazz / cool, West Coast
    Audio CD: 1 Oct 1999
    Recorded September 30, 1984
    Time: 57:33
    Label: Criss Cross Jazz 1010 CD

    Chetbakertribute.com:
    The meeting of these two greats produces some magical moments. Baker and Marsh burn through "Well Spoken" with some smoking-hot solos. Chet then plays one of the prettiest versions of "If You Could See Me Now" that he has ever laid down. "We Know It's Love", "Looking Good Tonight" and the title piece are three fun little swinging tunes penned by Chet.

    Amazon reviewer:
    Late in the day for both these guys--this meeting between Chet Baker & Warne Marsh was recorded in 1984, a few years before both their untimely demises, & the photos inside of the two players show them both looking pretty worn & spindly. The music itself is excellent, despite the slightly odd match of players--Marsh's grey murmuring tone, elaborately calligraphic lines & microscopic attention to the beat & subdivisions of the beat (& subsubdivisions), vs Baker's minimalist, slighty hesitant improvisations, pursed, intimate sound, & tendency to skim over the tunes rhythmically. Most of the pieces are themeless improvs over familiar chord changes ("Well Spoken" = "Speak Low"; "We Know It's Love" = "What Is This Thing...."; "Looking Good Tonight" = "The Way You Look Tonight"); there are also ballad features for each horn--"If You Could See Me Now" for Chet, "Imagination" for Warne. A good rhythm section lends support--Hod O'Brien on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, Eddie Gladden on drums (best known for his work with Dexter Gordon). Good stuff, & fans of either of the principals will find this one well worth getting hold of.

    Personnel:
    Chet Baker, trumpet
    Warne Marsh, tenor sax
    Hod O'Brien, piano
    Cecil McBee, bass
    Eddie Gladden, drums

    Another pairing (see 'September Song')... with the great Duke Jordan. It has none of the magic of 1979's 'No Problem', but there are some good moments. The tracks on Star Eyes find Chet playing some long, burning solos. Both CD's offer mediocre sound quality.

    This is where you really start to hear Chet find his own sound. He starts branching out on the two My Funny Valentine's found here, and his recordings of Stella By Starlight sound like the one's he did in the 1980's. The recording quality is pretty average in Volume 1, but it improves in Volume 2 and 3, especially considering how noisy American Jazz clubs used to be. Zing Went The Strings of My Heart is amazing, and it's one the fastest tempo tune Baker ever recorded. On several cuts, he plays the "Boo-bams", a bongo-type instrument invented by his friend Bill Loughborough.

    AMG:
    This third and final Pacific Jazz volume of the Chet Baker Quartet in concert continues with more music from the August 1954 date at the Tiffany Club in Los Angeles (some of which was heard on Vol. 2 in this CD series). Baker is in great form on trumpet throughout this performance, accompanied by pianist Russ Freeman, bassist Carson Smith, and drummer Bob Neel. The group is well-rehearsed and in top form, beginning with a turbocharged run through Charlie Parker's "My Little Suede Shoes." There are some songs previously covered in different versions on the earlier volumes ("Line for Lyons," "My Old Flame," "Carson City Stage," as well as Freeman's "The Wind" and "Russ Job"), but these versions not only measure up to the earlier ones but in several cases improve upon them. Freeman's inventive bop solos are another highlight of this release, especially in up- tempo tracks such as "Zing Went the Strings of My Heart." For novelty, Baker also plays boo-bam (a series of small drums made of timber bamboo) between his trumpet solos on four tracks, though he generally remains in the background on the instrument. For a nightclub recording of this era, the audience is surprisingly quiet and one isn't distracted by clinking glasses, ringing cash registers, and the occasional drunk talking at the top of his lungs. Although all of the selections previously appeared on a Mosaic box set, that long out of print collector's item would command a hefty price tag, so this individual CD, along with the Pacific Jazz CDs which preceded it, is a highly recommended and much more affordable alternative.
