    Claude Bolling & Jean-Pierre Rampal

    Claude Bolling & Jean-Pierre Rampal
Suite for Flute & Jazz piano trio No.1 [1975]
    Jazz/Instrumental | APE | 192 Mb

    Beautiful album for Audiophiles

Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio on CBS Records (MK 33233) was on the Billboard list of classical best-sellers for over 530 weeks, a rare occurrence in the history of the charts.

This first suite and the second one by same artist pair never get old, and are like old friends every time you hear them, as they never fail to deliver. You'll find yourself repeatly play them all the time.

French composer and pianist Claude Bolling earned considerable acclaim for his 1970s series of semi-classical jazz suites of which the two flute pieces included here are probably the best known. Originally written for the flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal, they are performed admirably here by the Roselli Quartet, with Giovanni Roselli handling the flute duties. Bouncy and light, meditatively bright and interesting, but a bit too loose for classical, and yet not quite jazz, Bolling's suites occupy an intriguing middle ground, suggesting possibilities perhaps more than anything else.

Jean-Pierre Rampal may never get down and dirty on this album, considered "his first jazz recording," but the music is nonetheless infectious, breezy, playful, and crystal clear. The legendary flutist is so technically accomplished that anything too "swinging" from him seems a bit stiff, but this is where drummer Marcel Sabiani, bassist Mel Young, and legendary jazz pianist (and friend of Duke Ellington) Claude Bolling take over, all making these compositions seem jazzier than they are on paper.

As an example, both "Baroque and Blue" and "Sentimentale" flirt with the morning air, with themes that somewhat separate Rampal's fluttering passages from all the hipster riffs. Track for track, note for note, there is nothing substandard about these "clazzical" hybrids. "Fugace" is a great countermelody express elevator, delightful in its energy and polish. "Javanaise" takes it slow enough for Charlie Brown to waltz about on the ice-skating rink. "Versatile" is a bouncy little trapeze act on the bass flute, and "Véloce" is a fantastic race to the wedding altar, a fantastic balance of tension and release, a nail-biter, a Buster Keaton melodrama, a cream pie in the face, and a precise exclamation mark to close the album. Here and there, Bolling and company manage to get Rampal to loosen his tie. Slightly. It's not quite jazz, but it's still spellbinding music.

Suite for Flute & Jazz piano trio No.2

    Beautiful album for Audiophiles

The first suite and this second one by same artist pair never get old, and are like old friends every time you hear them, as they never fail to deliver. You'll find yourself repeatly play them all the time.

With this, the second in a series of jazz-classical fusion collections, Bolling has reached new heights. Every single piece is refreshingly original - no repeats are duds in this collection

I stand in awe of Claude Bolling's amazingly inventive musical talents. Not only does he compose the most astonishing music--a delicious cross of classical structure and jazz loosey-gooseyness--but he gets folks like flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal, guitarist Alexandre Lagoya, bassist Pierre-Yves Sorin, and many others to join him in recording these pieces. On "Suite for Flute & Jazz Piano Trio No. 2," Bolling is up to his usual high-jinks, which is to say he's in fine form.

"Amoureuse" is a lush ballad, opening with contemplative piano work by Bolling and gradually adding in Rampal's impeccable flute. It's a song you'd want to be kissed to if you were starring in a romantic film. "Entr'Amis" is a saucy, sassy prance of a song, flute and piano winking at each other throughout. "Vagabonde" opens with the most gorgeous fuguelike piano work--it sounds as though J. S. Bach might have composed it after a stein or two of good German beer. "Intime" is a pretty, quiet little song with an in-joke of a title (it means "intimate" in French, but you could also read it as a clue to the pace of it, as in the instruments staying "in time" with each other). "Jazzy" is a vigorous cartwheel of a song with a frenetic pace--it's positively dazzling. Highly recommended!

Claude Bolling & Pinchas Zukerman - Suite for Violin & Jazz piano
Suite for Violin & Jazz piano [1977]
    Jazz/Instrumental/Classical/Cross-over | APE & Covers & Booklets | 242 Mb

    Beautiful album for Audiophiles

Another well-known classical artist took part in Claude Bolling's great jazz Suite series. This album would defenitely enlighten your day.
Now besieged with requests for classical/jazz "suites" for himself and big-time classical performers, Claude Bolling took up violinist Pinchas Zukerman's commission, and out came another attractive confection that allows a classical cat to play quasi-jazzman for a day. This time, Bolling chooses mostly classical dance forms for his eight movements, still inserting mostly mainstream jazz segments (and a few vintage ones) around and under his soloist without getting him involved. Although he isn't asked to play jazz, Zukerman's warm, Romantic-era-grounded virtuosity doesn't betray even a hint of feeling for it; that makes Bolling's close-knit merger even more remarkable. On "Tango," the compulsively restless Zukerman switches to viola; elsewhere he sticks to the violin. Max Hediguer (bass) and Marcel Sabiani (drums) provide the propulsive rhythm in chosen spots, and Bolling still manages to swing hard even when playing underneath the square, heavy Zukerman tone. ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide
