Enrico Rava has been a major figure on the European jazz scene for more than four decades. His early association with the free jazz movement led to recordings and performances with the likes of Gato Barbieri, Don Cherry, Mal Waldron and Steve Lacy. Moving to New York he could be heard with Lee Konitz, Carla Bley (Escalator Over The Hill), Cecil Taylor and Charlie Haden. Three recordings for ECM Records in the 1970s linked him up with John Abercrombie and Roswell Rudd. Since then he has played with most of the leading jazz musicians from Europe and Europe in a wide variety of contexts.
On this live recording Rava's quintet performs five tunes composed by, or associated with Miles Davis. The unusual frontline of two trumpets, rather than trumpet and saxophone, results in fresh and stimulating interpretations of the familiar material by a group of outstanding musicians.

The noted Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava is back on ECM, where time likes to stand still in the studio, and his sturdy, burnished lyricism is on full display. But in tandem with his terrific young trombonist of recent years, Gianluca Petrella (whose Blue Note debut was one of last year's best albums), the 67-year-old Rava sets off his dreamy reflections with looser, freer, rhythmically active pieces animated by both modern screech tones and genial borrowings from early jazz. Songs such as Rava's "Echoes of Duke," a jibbing and jabbing updating of Duke Ellington's "Echoes of Harlem," are so lively, you may find yourself wishing the whole album were like that. But there's no denying the rewards of more muted material like Rava's labyrinthine "Secrets." His excellent, all-Italian working quintet includes a new pianist in Andrea Pozza, whose clean, flowing style neatly ties up the songs, as well as returnees Rosario Bonaccorso on bass and Roberto Gatto on drums.

Italian trumpeter Rava's last release on ECM was Volver, way back in 1986. His return to the Manfred Eicher stable follows a recent run on France's Label Bleu. These sessions were recorded in Udine, not far from Rava's birthplace, and were produced by Eicher himself. Nowadays, Enrico appears to have settled down when compared to the work he did with Roswell Rudd, Tony Oxley, the Jazz Composer's Orchestra or, more recently, the Italian Instabile Orchestra; on the cover, he reclines restfully, bathed in lambent light, evoking the musical mood within.
There's a clear preference for ballads, although as the album develops, the material gathers pace and intensity. The compositions are Enrico's own, apart from the title track standard, a tune which is brushed over lightly, almost like a melodic sketch. The opening "Cromosomi" is very relaxed, wafting its theme as Rosario Bonaccorso sings along to his bass solo. "Drops" consolidates the romantic mood, as Rava exchanges pristine lines with trombonist Gianluca Petrella, a former student of the leader's who now qualifies as a hot new discovery. Petrella also makes a mark on "Sand", spreading his tone widely, burbling and buzzing with an enquiring pair of lips. His friendly outburst helps rouse Rava into a peppery display, restlessly moving up, down and around before quietening down for Stefano Bollani's piano solo.

It's at this halfway point that the direction changes, with "Algir Dalbughi" coming on as an old-fashioned swinger, complete with ensemble singalongs and muted-trombone theatricality. Rava races off in a trilling hurry, alternating with a garrulous Petrella. Bonaccorso provides another talking bass solo on "Blancasnow", where the leader opens up his tubes for some forceful soloing. Petrella is always able to match his mentor's vigour and expressiveness. "Hornette And The Drums Thing" is an Ornette Coleman pastiche, providing a closely-twinned horn chase and a tumbling drum spotlight for Roberto Gatto.

This quintet was formed at the turn of the century, and has forged a strong group identity that becomes even more evident during live performance. The album operates on a thoughtful level, restraining the full extrovert power of Rava's recent gigging form. Nevertheless, the trumpeter himself believes this to be his best recorded work so far.

Trumpeter Enrico Rava and his quartet (with guitarist Harry Pepl, bassist Furio Di Castri and drummer Bruce Ditmas) meet the Argentinian bandoneon player Dino Saluzzi on six group originals. Rava's introverted yet inwardly passionate playing matches well with Saluzzi's modern tangos, and the results are fairly accessible yet still exploratory. An intriguing set.

Trumpeter Enrico Rava has proven himself adept at virtually every style of jazz, from bop through the avant-garde. For this short recording, he teams up with third-stream pianist Ran Blake in a series of 12 emotionally drenched tunes emphasizing the kind of dark, foreboding atmosphere for which Blake is well-known. Highlights include wonderful interpretations of "Tea for Two," "I Should Care," "Let's Stay Together," a pairing of "Vertigo" and "Laura," and "Nature Boy." Rava does his best to adapt his usually brighter playing to the overall noir atmosphere, and he generally succeeds, making this a must-have for followers of both Blake's and Rava's work. A strong lyrical element permeates, as the two explore all of the nooks and crannies of each tune, often in slow motion. The results speak for themselves, and the enthusiastic live audience was clearly touched.

On this CD, the lyrical trumpeter Enrico Rava performs themes from Fellini movies, operas and classical music, along with three originals by band members. Despite its title, not all of the selections are taken at slower tempos, but there is an emphasis on memorable and haunting melodies. The results, which do not quite fit in as avant-garde or world music, are certainly jazz. Rava, guitarists Domenico Carliri and Roberto Cecchetto, and guest Richard Galliano on accordion get some individual improvisations, generally remaining within the mood of each piece while stretching its boundaries a bit. Barbara Casini's occasional vocals in Italian are a strong asset, and she comes across much closer to a bossa nova singer than to an opera star. Definitely an intriguing set.
