Multi-instrumentalist and composer Harry Manx has been described as an essential link between the music of the East and the music of the West. He fuses traditional blues with classic Indian ragas to create a distinctive sound. Manx, primarily a guitarist, who also plays harmonica and banjo, was born on the Isle of Mann and moved with his family to Canada.

This is Manx's first CD and is full of great deeply felt and played blues. He is a wonderful musician playing equally well on Lap Slide, Mohan Veena (the 20 stringed Indian slide), and Harmonica while singing in a mellow expressive way (a bit like Van Morrison on ASTRAL WEEKS). It is hard to believe he is playing alone sometimes (the liner notes say he is with only the occational overdub). I love this stuff and highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates great slide playing, especially for its transformative/meditiative quality.

Dog My Cat is Harry's first CD. Released in 2000 and recorded on Salt Spring Island, it features Harry playing Lap Slide Guitar, Mohan Veena (a 20-string Indian slide guitar), Harmonica, and Vocals. Recorded in a single 11-hour studio session with only harmonica and occasional guitar solo overdubs, Dog My Cat captured the attention of music peers, fans and reviewers. The Canadian Independent Music Awards voted it as the Best Blues Album of the Year in 2002 while the same year the Toronto Blues Society nominated it as Blues Album of the Year.

Harry himself says, “This CD is about ...the depth and truth of the blues, the transcendence of the raga. Some of the songs hint at the unspeakable, the rest are deep-rooted in the earth."

Harry Manx - Wise and Otherwise (2002)



"After 20 years of touring the world as a blues musician, Harry Manx finally reached India, where he studied with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and learned to play mohan vina, a guitar/sitar hybrid with eight plucked strings and 12 sympathetic strings. Now, after the promising debut of last year's Dog My Cat, he's back with the solo acoustic Wise and Otherwise, mixing ragas with blues as he shifts between vina, banjo, six-string lap guitar, and harmonica. It's a meditative, quietly spirited approach that's much more relaxed and fully integrated than Dog My Cat, as Manx finds new shadings to Appalachian balladry ("Death Have Mercy"), Jimi Hendrix ("Foxy Lady"), and B.B. King ("The Thrill Is Gone"). His own songs have grown smarter and subtler, and his playing has grown deeper and more soulful."

Harry Manx & Kevin Breit - Jubilee (2003)



Manx and Breit met at a festival in Canada in 2001 and immediately struck up a musical understanding with an inspired improvised live set. A year later, they got together to record Jubilee, which embraces the spontaneity and freshness of a live performance.

The CD compromises a range tracks written by Manx, a couple in partnership with Breit, and notable innovative covers: Danny O'Keefe wrote the laid back "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues"; "Take This Hammer" (Working on a Railroad) is traditional song - also part of the Tom Topping Band repertoire; there's a disarming instrumental version of the Doobie Brothers classic, "Taking It To The Streets"; and an energised reworking of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child".

Harry Manx: Mantras for Madmen - 2005



Harry Manx has been working on his personal mix of blues and Indian music for some time now, and he's reached a virtually seamless match with this release, Mantras for Madmen -- as well as climbing to a new plateau in his songwriting. There's a soulful tinge to pieces like "It Makes No Difference" and "Never the Twain" that fills out his music, and he gets and holds a groove as laid-back as J.J. Cale. The only overtly Eastern pieces on the disc are "Afghani Raga," a short dip in the water, and the solo "Talkin Turban," but you can hear it in the mohan veena (a resonant Indian slide guitar) of "San Diego . Tijuana," where India meets Mexico, or "Your Sweet Name." Manx's voice seems to have taken on a new maturity, too, clearly evident on the duet "It Takes a Tear," which verges into gospel. This is, without a doubt, among his best.

Harry Manx & Kevin Breit - In Good We Trust (2007)



The follow-up to this pair's Jubilee album finds them basically starting where they left off. And fans should be thankful for that. The instrumentation is top-notch and the selections seem to suit the record perfectly. A great example of this is the haunting but folksy reworking of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire," which is still dark but has a certain hint of brightness thanks to the use of bazouki and tamboura. However, the original material definitely measures up to the covers, especially the smooth and tender "Sometimes," which glides along effortlessly. Meanwhile, Manx and Breit weave more magic with the strolling, ambling "Bottom of the Hill," which is quite catchy. Think of a song by Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch and it's a fair comparison. This is definitely truer during the rootsy and looser "Steal," as Manx and Breit mix roots, folk, and blues impressively. The album is offset, though, by pretty instrumentals, the first being "Better Man Blues," which has an airy yet dark quality running through it, resembling a piece of a soundtrack score thatMark Knopfler hasn't gotten around to yet. However, a rather heady, psychedelic-era tune called "Death Have Mercy" brings to mind Jeff Beck's work circa Frankie's House. Meanwhile, the title track is the Delta blues personified, even if there are flourishes of guitar strumming over the standard slow-creeping blues chords. For the homestretch, Manx and Breit create the gorgeous and cozy "Hang On," which sounds like it was recorded in one take as the sun was coming up. The album, as it states on its cover, is indeed supreme quality.

This album was my first exposure to Harry Manx - well actually my second. I bought this after seeing him play live about 5 years ago. Great concert - and the album is a good representation of where he was at in 2004. I've seen him about 4-5 times since and never been disappointed. If you get a chance to see him live, cancel everything else - you won't regret it.

Harry Manx has been gently courting his audience with his Indian-inspired take on the blues, a marriage of Eastern music to Western, creating a niche that has more to do with world music than anything else more limiting. His success has been built on the back of his instrumental prowess on his weapon of choice: the 20-string mohan veena, which subtly blends Eastern sounds to blues-friendly turf. On his eighth release, Harry ups the ante with the addition of two members of Toronto-based world music ensemble Tasa. You can almost hear the audience buying some time, clapping politely between songs as they acclimatise themselves to this new balance. It doesn't take long to win them over, as the hyper-simpatico league of support players (notably guitarist Kevin Breit and harmonica-player Steve Mariner) weave in and around Harry's leads with deft skill. If Samidha Joglekar's vocals contrast too starkly with Harry s croon on Point of Purchase, all is forgiven by Single Spark, and Joglekar's contribution at the tail end of the jam-friendly Voodoo Chile earns its just rewards. Of special note is Mariner's wailing harp solo on the ten-minute jam that was Muddy Waters' Can t Be Satisfied, which will more than satisfy. Live pays significant dividends across its 60-minute length. The faithful are well served while the casual Manx fan will benefit from a closer look into the very core of Harry's muse. --Eric Thom, Exclaim!
