Jan Garbarek, The Hilliard Ensemble - Officium Novum

    FLAC (EAC rip) & mp3 @ 320 kbps | tracks | Log+CUE | cover scans | 265 MB (FLAC) & 145 MB (mp3) incl. 3% recovery
Genre: Classical, Jazz, Crossover | Label: ECM New Series (ecm 2125) | Year: 2010

“ Long-awaited third album from one of the most touching and magical sound combinations in music today: Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek with Britain's premier vocal group, The Hilliard Ensemble. The first album, Officium, has sold nearly 1.5 million copies, and it is still in the charts as one of the top 20 best-selling classical albums of the past decade, well after its 1994 release.

The spellbinding Officium album, with Garbarek's saxophone as a free-ranging 'fifth voice' with the Ensemble, gave the first indications of their immense combined musical scope and emotional power. Mnemosyne (1999) expanded the repertoire beyond 'early music' to embrace works both ancient and modern. Now Officium novum finds the collective at the crossroads of East and West.

A central focus is music of Armenia based on the adaptations of Komitas Vardapet, drawing upon both medieval sacred music and the bardic tradition of the Caucasus. The Hilliards studied these pieces during visits to Armenia, and the music's modes encourage some of Garbarek's most impassioned playing. Also included are Arvo Pärt's "Most Holy Mother of God" in an a cappella reading, Byzantine chant, two pieces by Jan Garbarek, including a new version of "We are the stars", plus Perotin's "Alleluia, Nativitas". ”

Apart from David Sanborn, probably no living saxophonist has a more instantly recognizable voice than Jan Garbarek; actually, given the fact that Sanborn's sound is so widely copied, Garbarek's may be easier to identify in a blindfold test. This album in particular puts that sound front and center. Garbarek's the show; he composed all of the music, and is essentially the only soloist. The music (much of which was composed as soundtrack material for film or video) is quintessential Garbarek, full of the world music influences that have characterized his work since the 1970s. Garbarek's resonant, carefully articulated tenor and soprano tone suits the spacious, minor/modal themes. He's as much a singer as instrumentalist. Garbarek also plays digital synthesizers, mostly as string or flute pads underneath the folkish melodies. The record's most notable secondary player is Garbarek's ECM labelmate, the bassist Eberhard Weber, whose lyric sensibility is a virtual mirror of Garbarek's. This is quiet, contemplative music for the most part -- attractive, but not superficially pretty. Its grooves are less celebratory than melancholic. There's an intensity here borne of deep concentration and commitment to beauty. Garbarek has come a long way since his early days as a quasi-free jazz experimentalist. This music is not jazz, nor is it experimental. But it is compelling in its way, representative of a first-rate creative musician, beyond category.

    Jan Garbarek - Rites (1998)

    MP3 320Kb | 182,4Mb

Since the late '70s, Jan Garbarek has been carving out a place within jazz for the folk and spiritual traditions of the indigenous peoples of Scandinavia, the Netherlands, and finally of those people all over the world. Rites, a double CD, is his attempt at forging a synthesis that takes improvisation into the heart of ritual music and creates a new form of spiritual from them both. Using a strategy for each of the discs, the first one digs deep into the spiritual and mystical side of his language. Garbarek plays soprano and tenor as well as synthesizers, drum machines, and samples — always understated, always elegant — and utilizes the talents of some of his running mates as well as new ones. Rainer Bruninghaus appears sporadically throughout, as does bassist Eberhard Weber, and drummer/percussion wizard Marilyn Mazur is ubiquitous. The music is slow, tenuous, and repetitive. It hardly matters — on disc one, anyway — which of the pieces are being played. All spacious ambience in which to enfold them both. Even Garbarek's trademark icy saxophone — usually made more so by Manfred Eicher's production — is warm, watery, and deeply entrenched in this warm mix that falls over listeners like a fine meditation blanket; like that blanket, it begins to stir emotions of them have spare, chant-like melodies that are lifted by myriad percussion instruments and keyboards, which provide a from deep within the heart of the listener. While these songs all segue into one another, it is worth noting that Garbarek recut "It's OK to Listen to the Grey Voice" for this collection, where it's performed with deeper conviction and fits better than it did on the album it was named for. Disc two of Rites is a bit of a different story. While the music is indeed intended for ritual, it comes from the celebratory side of the aisle rather than the contemplative one. Here are dances, Garbarek's versions of gospel shouts, processionals, festival waltzes, and all manner of joyful ceremonies completing the circle. On one collection, listeners get music for prayer, contemplation, and grief, as well as a funky European read of indigenous music for moving to and celebrating. Clearly this is what sets Rites above Garbarek's other recordings, him taking that balance he possessed so early in his career back again and putting it to work in a near-sacred setting.

Jan Garbarek Group - In Concert: Serenadenhof Nürnberg (2007)

Audience rec > FLAC | No Log, No CUE | cover art | ~680 MB (3% recovery)
Genre: Jazz, Modern Creative | Label: Bootleg (Audience recording) | Date: 28 June 2007

This is an audience recording that I received some time ago and I only now got around to fixing it up for posting. The Jan Garbarek Group plays for almost two hours. The recording consists of four long medleys with songs running into each other (as usually happens during Jan Garbarek's live performances) and an encore. There is enough material to burn 2 CDs if that's what you want to do. To a large extent, the group performs the songs that have been released on the In Concert: Dresden album in 2009.

Long before he became the standard-bearer for the "ECM sound," churning out discs with a mildly medieval or Scandinavian flavor spiced with enough new age fluff to guarantee sales, Jan Garbarek produced a string of superb albums, culminating in Witchi-Tai-To, his masterpiece. Intriguingly, with the exception of Palle Danielsson's "Kukka," all of the pieces here are cover versions, largely culled from the then burgeoning Jazz Composers Orchestra catalog or related musicians. It opens with Carla Bley's "A.I.R.," an incredibly infectious melody heard on her Escalator Over the Hill. Garbarek's soprano slithers sensuously around the theme, searching for and finding all manner of variations, while Stenson, a chameleon-like pianist who shows aspects of Jarrett, Tyner, and Alice Coltrane, makes all the right choices in support. Charlie Haden used the Carlos Puebla composition "Hasta Siempre" as a cornerstone for his Liberation Music Orchestra, and Garbarek rips into it with total romantic gusto; his tenor playing has never sounded more robust, muscular, or inspired. The title track by Jim Pepper is given a short but lovely reading, Garbarek withholding its gorgeous theme until the end of the piece, leaving the listener dying to hear more. Which is exactly what Don Cherry did on his Relativity Suite, where his supremely beautiful song "Desireless" lasted barely a minute. Here, it's stretched out over the 20-minute mark, Garbarek summoning the spirit of John Coltrane and offering a stunning amount of indefatigable creativity. He might never have reached similar heights since, but Witchi-Tai-To, along with Dave Holland's Conference of the Birds, is one of the two finest jazz albums that ECM ever released, and simply one of the very top jazz albums of the '70s.

Yet more musings from the ever-prosperous repertoire of Jan Garbarek, here in minimalist world music mode and accompanied by oud player Anouar Brahem and Ustad Shaukat Hussain on tabla. At times suggestive of a simplistic Oregon or some of the more sedate offerings of Rabih Abou-Khalil, MADAR is richly steeped in Middle Eastern authenticity and textural folklore. The album's rudimentary nature renders it fairly reflective of the indigenous cultures it takes delight in spotlighting. "Bahia" doesn't feature Garbarek at all but is a rhythmless lullaby dominated by Brahem's oud. Sands shift and parched winds blow when all three players merge on atmospheric, extended jams such as "Qaws," where Garbarek's rural air becomes a nomadic cry trapped within an intertwined mantra of percussion and strings. MADAR offers more signs of intelligent life beyond the traditional jazz diaspora.

    Jan Garbarek: Works

    Jazz | MP3 320k | 123 Mb | Year 1980 | ECM 1151 | Covers | Time 51:06

The Norwegian saxophon player, Jan Garbarek had an early breakthrough into the elite of modern jazz in the 60's, due to his extensive cooperation with Keith Jarrett. His name is listed next to the big names from the U.S. and is associated with the birth of an original european sound in jazz.
His tone is clear, indipendent, ascetic and pure. "The north and nature, song and mystery" are what Garbarek calls his origins and these are his unrefutable heritage. If it wasn't for his strong inner connection with Norwegian folklore, he wouldn't be able to integrate Brasilian and Asiatic influences as convincingly as he does. That the origin of all music lies in song, is to be felt in many of his compositions, and his greatest attention lies on melody and on the clear articulation of melodious-lines, that he plays with unmistakable impressive urgency. "In my best moments I hope to give meaning to every note".
Suddenly, out of an oscillating melody, Garbarek's horn emerges, keeping its sovereignty into the highest pitches, and without giving way to uncontrollable recklessness. His unisono playing with Eberhard Weber's singing bass gives his songs a hymnal luster. The breadth of peacefulness and maturity in his music eliminates all question of stylish fashionability.
Jan Garbarek's Chambermusic-Jazz might well be the most beautiful sound next to silence, and he, as sculptor of these sounds, is intrinsingly connected with the illustrative and folkloristic qualities and influences. He is an original stylist always searching for new realms for his intense and extremely visual music.

Agnes Buen Garnas & Jan Garbarek - Rosenfole (1989)

This 1988 recording may be Garbarek's most extended foray into the early music of his native Norway, crafting spacious settings for the voice of Agnes Buen Garnas, a Norwegian traditional singer who brings a rich drama to these songs based on medieval origins. Her voice is a stunning instrument, possessed of a thrilling vibrato and a subtle sense of pitch that are only enhanced by the electronic climate of the recording.

Though there are traces of his usual reeds, Garbarek uses synthesizers and a host of percussion overdubs to create a virtual orchestra with wind, string, and harmonium textures. It doesn't sound like mere mimicry of medieval music, but a heightened setting for the drama of Garnas's voice, from the undercurrent of soprano saxophone on "Signe Lita" to the anvil-like percussion of "Lillebroer." The 16-minute "Marjit" possesses both epic grandeur and hypnotic power with its pulsing, tablalike drumming, deep drones, and endlessly repeating melody. While it's a kind of precursor to Garbarek's later project with the Hilliard Ensemble, Rosenfole has a distinctive beauty all its own, and a stunning presence in Garnas's voice.

Jan Garbarek & The Hilliard Ensemble - Mnemosyne

It's been six years since these same performers got together to create one of the decade's more unusual experiments in musical alchemy. Beginning with the raw materials of early music and modern jazz, the four male voices of the Hilliard Ensemble joined with jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek to see what would happen when the proper measure of old music and new style were combined, shaped by the performers' considerable experience and collective aesthetic vision. The success of that recording, titled Officium, and subsequent concert performances paved the way for this second effort, continuing the performers' search for artistically meaningful, musically satisfying combinations of written music and improvisatory elements. The odd title of the new recording comes from a mystical poem by Friedrich Hölderlin, quoted in the liner notes and accompanied by pictures from Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal. Officium aficionados will notice that Mnemosyne is even more adventurous in its explorations, which range farther and farther from the printed page. Musical fragments and a general outline are the starting points for several pieces. Improvisation is more frequently and freely employed, but always adheres to an agreed stylistic framework. Alongside a Tallis hymn or a chant by Hildegard, we hear Iroquois and Peruvian song fragments, an ancient Greek tune, and a beautiful lullaby by Veljo Tormis. Garbarek's tasteful improvisations are appropriate additions, inspired commentaries. The Hilliards are even better than on Officium; their awareness and sensitivity brings everything together into a truly unified expression that shows the timelessness of music and reminds us that where rhythm, melody, and musical imagination join, different styles, centuries, and genres are not necessarily obstacles to compatibility.

Saxophonist Jan Garbarek, bassist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Peter Erskine have been making records for ECM for a long time, both as leaders and as sidemen. They know each other's styles well, they're familiar with ECM label head Manfred Eicher's echo-drenched production tendencies, and they know how to turn jazz formulas into hip, lyrical romanticism. On this leaderless trio album, as with most ECM releases, you get the feeling of music emerging from a vast and echoey space; Erskine's Morse-code drum accents, Vitous' thrumming basslines and the plaintive cry of Garbarek's soprano and alto saxophones are far removed from what some would consider "jazz," but that's not the point. The tunes may be somewhat interchangeable, but the music is virtuosic, thoughtful and thoroughly lovely, at times heart-tugging. Makes you wish these three would get together more often.

Jan Garbarek - Twelve Moons (1993)

This 1992 recording by the Garbarek Group has their customary blend of Norwegian folk themes and original compositions, with the leader's big-toned soprano and tenor saxophones at the heart of a music that combines cool lyricism and intense, if restrained, passion. It's the emotion that Garbarek can concentrate in a single note that distinguishes his work. His soprano is a keening wail in the unaccompanied introduction to "Brother Wind March," his high-register tenor an impassioned cry on "The Tall Tear Trees." Rainer Bruninghaus's piano provides a reflectively lyrical contrast, while the shifting rhythms of percussionists Manu Katche and Marilyn Mazur add variety to the reiterated themes. The CD is filled with distinctively Norwegian touches. Grieg's "Arietta" is a wistful vehicle for Garbarek's soprano, while the traditional "Gautes-Margjit" is the briefest of melodies. The haunting "Psalm" is sung by Agnes Buen Garnas with whom Garbarek recorded Rosenfole, while Mari Boine, singer and Laplander activist, performs her "Darvanam" with just Garbarek's tenor as accompaniment, invoking another world of musical possibilities. The CD concludes with a serenely beautiful version of Jim Pepper's "Witchi-Tai-To," first recorded by Garbarek almost two decades before, and touching on Pepper's Native American roots.

If you are a fan of Jan Garbarek you will love this CD. In many ways it is a different recording when compared with his others. Johnson's subdued organ is the drone that Garbarek solos over with his traditional cutting and piercing style of play. It is an ambient recording that has a gothic quality to it. Highly recommended.
