    Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker Op. 71, is a fairy tale-ballet in two acts, three scenes, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composed in 1891–92. Alexandre Dumas père's adaptation of the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann was set to music by Tchaikovsky (written by Marius Petipa and commissioned by the director of the Imperial Theatres Ivan Vsevolozhsky in 1891). In Western countries, this ballet has become perhaps the most popular ballet performed, primarily around Christmas time.

Mariss Jansons's outstanding Tchaikovsky series with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra makes a welcome appearance in this boxed set, confirming all I have said about the individual issues over the last three years, It may still seem odd to those who have not sampled these consistently refreshing, beautifully paced and structured performances that the Oslo Philharmonic can so successfully match itself against the world's greatest orchestras, but the evidence here seems clearer to me every time I hear them and make comparisons.
Jansons in Tchaikovsky has the gift of conveying the full power and poetry of these works, naturally without indulging in wilful distortions or exaggerations. The whole set provides a bench-mark in this area, not only for interpretation but for brilliant and atmospheric recording quality too, against which others now have to be judged.

The Manfred Symphony in B minor, Op. 58 is a programmatic symphony composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky between May and September 1885. It is based on the poem Manfred written by Lord Byron in 1817. It is the only one of Tchaikovsky's symphonies he completed which is not numbered (the Symphony in E flat is a conjectural work left unfinished by the composer) and was written between the Fourth and Fifth Symphonies.

This recording was made two years after Chailly made his debut with the RCO and one year before he became chief conductor of the RCO. Enjoy!

    Pjotr Illych Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos. 1, 2 & 3

Tchaikovsky wrote his Symphony No. 1 in G minor, "Winter Daydreams", Op. 13, in 1866, just after he accepted a professorship at the Moscow Conservatory. The composer's brother Modest claimed this work cost Tchaikovsky more labor and suffering than any of his other works. Even so, he remained fond of it, writing his patroness Nadezhda von Meck in 1883 that "although it is in many ways very immature, yet fundamentally it has more substance and is better than any of my other more mature works." He dedicated the symphony to Nikolai Rubinstein.

Tchaikovsky composed his Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op. 17 in 1872. One of Tchaikovsky's very joyous compositions, it was successful upon its premiere; it also won the favor of the group of nationalistic Russian composers known as "The Five", led by Mili Balakirev. Because Tchaikovsky used three Ukrainian folk songs to great effect in this work, it was nicknamed the "Little Russian" by Nikolay Kashkin, a friend of the composer as well as a well-known musical critic of Moscow.

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 3 in D major, Op. 29, was written in 1875. He began it at Vladimir Shilovsky's estate at Ussovo on 5 June and finished it on 1 August at Verbovka. It is dedicated to Shilovsky. The Symphony No. 3 is unique in Tchaikovsky's symphonic output in two ways: it is the only one of his seven symphonies (including the unnumbered Manfred Symphony) in a major key; and it is the only one to contain five movements (an additional Alla tedesca movement occurs between the opening movement and the slow movement). Like its two predecessors, it carries a nickname, "Polish". This name is in reference to the recurring Polish dance rhythms prominent in the symphony's final movement. It was premiered in Moscow on 19 November 1875, under the baton of Nikolai Rubinstein, at the first concert of the Russian Music Society's season.

These recordings by Bernard Haitink with the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam date back from the seventies. At the time of release they won both Haitink and the orchestra critical acclaim and re-affirmed Haitink's position as on of the notable conductors of the symphonic repertoire. The set was re-issued in the 80's in a 2CD-set and even later in a commemorative box-set containing all of the Tchaikovsky Symphonies as well as the overtures. These are the first CD-releases from the 80's with the original cover-art. Needless to say that these recordings should be part of any classical collection. Enjoy!

    Pjotr Illych Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos. 4, 5 & 6

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, was written between 1877 and 1878. The symphony's first performance was at a Russian Musical Society concert in Saint Petersburg in February 1878, with Nikolai Rubinstein as conductor. The symphony has become a staple of the orchestral repertoire, and remains one of the most frequently performed symphonies of the late 19th century.

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64 was composed between May and August 1888 and was first performed in St Petersburg on November 6 of that year with Tchaikovsky conducting. Some critics, including Tchaikovsky himself, have considered the ending insincere or even crude. After the second performance, Tchaikovsky wrote, "I have come to the conclusion that it is a failure". Despite this, the symphony has gone on to become one of the composer's most popular works. The second movement, in particular, is considered to be classic Tchaikovsky: well crafted, colorfully orchestrated, and with a memorable melody for solo horn.

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Pathétique, Op. 74 was his final symphony, written between February and the end of August 1893. The composer led the first performance in St. Petersburg on October 28 of that year, nine days before his death. The second performance, under Eduard Nápravník, took place 20 days later at a memorial concert. It included some minor corrections that Tchaikovsky had made after the premiere, and was thus the first performance of the work in the form in which it is known today.
