Der Rosenkavalier (Op. 59) (The Knight of the Rose) is a comic opera in three acts by Richard Strauss to an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It is loosely adapted from the novel Les amours du chevalier de Faublas by Louvet de Couvrai and Molière’s comedy Monsieur de Pourceaugnac. It was first performed at the Königliches Opernhaus in Dresden on 26 January 1911 under the direction of Max Reinhardt. Until the premiere, the working title was Ochs von Lerchenau. (The choice of the name Ochs is not accidental, for in German Ochs is translated as ox, which depicts the character of the Baron throughout the opera.) The opera has four main characters: the aristocratic Marschallin, her very young lover Octavian Rofrano, her coarse, skirt-chasing country cousin Baron Ochs, and his young prospective fiancée Sophie, the lovely daughter of a rich Viennese bourgeois. Baron Ochs, having arranged with Sophie's father Faninal to combine his noble rank with Faninal's money by marrying Sophie, asks the Marschallin to suggest an appropriate young man to be his Knight of the Rose, who will present a silver rose to Sophie on his behalf as a traditional symbol of courtship. She recommends Octavian. When Octavian delivers the rose, he and Sophie fall in love on sight, and must figure out how to prevent Baron Ochs from marrying Sophie. They accomplish this in a comedy of errors that is smoothed over with the help of the Marschallin.

Richard Strauss: Don Quixote

Don Quixote, op. 35, is a composition for cello, viola and large orchestra. Subtitled "Phantastische Variationen über ein Thema ritterlichen Charakters" ("Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character"), the work is based on the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. Strauss composed this work in Munich in 1897. The premiere took place in Cologne on 8 March 1898, with Friedrich Grützmacher as the cello soloist and Franz Wüllner as the conductor. The score is of 758 measures duration and is written in Sinfonia concertante form, with the solo cello representing Don Quixote, and the solo viola and tenor tuba depicting the comic Sancho Panza. The second variation depicts an episode where Don Quixote encounters a herd of sheep and perceives them as an approaching army. Strauss uses dissonant fluttertonguing in the brass to emulate the bleating of the sheep, an early instance of this extended technique. Strauss later quoted this passage in his music for Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, at the moment a servant announces the dish of "leg of mutton in the Italian style".
Whenever Karajan and Rostropovich teamed up, great things happened. In 1975, they recorded what many still consider the consummate Don Quixote, a richly characterized, brilliantly played account of what is probably Strauss's best tone poem. Rostropovich's command of the solo part is overwhelming, but even more impressive is the imagination he brings to the reading, in particular his identification with the poignant, crazed side of the old knight's character. The Berliners produce a veritable rainbow of orchestral color behind him, and Karajan, as usual, is firmly in control of pacing and balance.

The Romanze in F major for cello and orchestra (or piano) was composed in 1883.
Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks (German: Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, 1894-95), Op. 28, is a tone poem by Richard Strauss, chronicling the misadventures and pranks of the German peasant folk hero, Till Eulenspiegel. The two themes representing Till are played respectively by the horn and the clarinet. The horn theme is a lilting melody that reaches a peak, falls downward, and ends in three long, loud notes, each progressively lower. The clarinet theme is crafty and wheedling, suggesting a trickster doing what he does best.

Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40, (literally A Heroic Life, but usually more loosely translated as A Hero's Life) is a tone poem by Richard Strauss. The work was completed in 1898, and heralds the composer’s more mature period in this genre. Strauss dedicated the piece to the 27-year old Willem Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, although it was premiered by the Frankfurter Museumsorchester.
Variations on an Original Theme for orchestra, Op. 36 ("Enigma"), commonly referred to as the Enigma Variations, is a set of a theme and its fourteen variations written for orchestra by Edward Elgar in 1898–1899. It is Elgar's best-known large-scale composition, for both the music itself and the enigmas behind it. Elgar dedicated the piece to "my friends pictured within", each variation being an affectionate portrayal of one of his circle of close acquaintances.

Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman without a Shadow; written: 1914-1918; Germany) is an opera in three acts by Richard Strauss with a libretto by his long-time collaborator, the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal. When the work premiered in Vienna on 10 October 1919, critics and audiences were unenthusiastic; many cited problems with Hofmannsthal's complicated and heavily symbolic libretto. Today, the opera is considered by many to be Strauss's finest work in the genre, although less frequently produced than some of the others.
Between 1989 and 1991 Decca took on this complex piece in one of the most expensive recording projects in history, with maestro Solti, the unsurpassed Wiener Philharmoniker and an all-star cast. In the Heldentenor role of the Emperor, Placido Domingo, the superstar tenor, gives a performance that is not only beautiful to the ear beyond previous recordings but which has an extra feeling for expressive detail, deeper than that which was previously recorded. Hildegard Behrens as the Dyer's wife is also a huge success. Her very feminine vulnerability is here a positive strength, and the voice has rarely sounded so beautiful on record. Julia Varady as the Empress is equally imaginative, with a beautiful voice, and Jose van Dam with his clean, dark voice brings a warmth and depth of expression to the role of Barak, the Dyer, which goes with a satisfyingly firm focus…this recording is unlikely to be matched, let alone surpassed for many years. Solti himself is inspired throughout.

These recordings from 1973 were re-issued on CD in the 80's shortly after the digital recordings of Strauss' Op.64, Op.24, Op. 28 and Op.20 (new recording!) in Philips's Silver Line Classics series. The CD was later on combined in an issue in the budget Duo-series. Although the newer recording of Don Juan is probably to preferred over the older 1973-recording, it still is top-notch. The Zarathustra however makes this recording worthwhile by itself as it is up to par with the best recordings around: beautiful orchestral balance (as a very well balanced, blended - though audible - organ) and gorgeous sound-quality. Moreover a superb reading of the solo-violin part by Herman Krebbers. Enjoy!

Released as a premium CD. This is not the same as the 2-disk-release in the Philips Budgetseries, which featured some older recordings (i.e. Don Juan) from the Philips Silver Line series. This recording features the Concertgebouw Orchestra and Haitink in their prime during the 80's; up to par with their later recording of 'Eine Alpensinfonie'.

Eine Alpensinfonie (An Alpine Symphony), Op. 64, is a tone poem written by German composer Richard Strauss in 1915. Though labeled as a symphony by the composer, this piece forgoes the conventions of the traditional multi-movement symphony and consists of twenty-two continuous sections of music. The story of An Alpine Symphony depicts the experiences of eleven hours (from eventide just before dawn to the following nightfall) spent climbing an Alpine mountain. An Alpine Symphony is one of Strauss’s largest non-operatic works in terms of performing forces: the score calls for about 125 players in total.
This recording dates back from 1985 and is one of the finest around. Expect glorious and opulent orchestral sound, as well as refined and detailed structure of the layering of instruments. It surpasses Karajan's recording of 1981 with the Berlin Philharmonic, as it does with many other recordings of later date.
