Tafelmusik, Canada's orchestra on period instruments, was founded in 1979. Since the arrival of its Music Director and concertmaster Jeanne Lamon in 1981, Tafelmusik has achieved international recognition for its concerts and recordings. The ensemble has eighteen core members and is expanded as the need arises. All members of the orchestra are specialists in historical performance practice and perform on original instruments or modern replicas faithful in design and construction to the originals. Tafelmusik's success has taken it around the world, with regular tours across North America, Europe, and Asia. Tafelmusik presents an annual 50-concert season at Trinity-St. Paul's Centre, an historic church in downtown Toronto. Tafelmusik has released over 70 CDs and has been awarded numerous international recording prizes, including nine Junos. Tafelmusik is baroque orchestra-in-residence at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, where it offers a post-graduate Advanced Certificate in Performance on period instruments. The Faculty of Music is also the home of the annual Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, an intensive workshop for advanced students and professional musicians in instruments and vocal performance practice.
The musical term "concerto" has its roots in the word concertare, which in Latin means "to contend, dispute, debate," and in Italian means "to agree, arrange, get together." In the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries the Italian definition prevailed, and the words concerto and concertante were used to describe music written for ensembles of voices and/or instruments. Gradually the word came to be associated primarily with instrumental music, and the Latin notion of contention crept in. The early concerti grossi were based on the popular chamber form of the trio sonata for two violins and continuo, to which were added four-part orchestral interjections. When the concertino trio played in alternation with the orchestra, a sort of contest or dialogue was created. Although composers such as Stradella had experimented with the idea of a concerto grosso as early as 1675, it is Arcangelo Corelli who both formalized and popularized the form in his landmark 1714 publication of twelve concerti grossi, Opus 6. Among his many imitators were Locatelli and Handel.
