Thelonious Monk was a brilliant improviser, using his incredible rhythmic sense and his harmonic ingenuity to find new possibilities in his own works or standards while touching on the wellsprings of the blues and early jazz piano styles. Those gifts were never more apparent than in his whimsical and inspired solo performances, like this one from 1959. In addition to the usual fare, Monk could always reach into a treasure trove of pop songs others had forgotten. Here he makes original music out of the ancient and ephemeral “There’s Danger in Your Eyes, Cherie,” and he manages to do it on two separate takes.

In 1998, Columbia/Legacy reissued Thelonious Monk’s 1964 album Live at the It Club as a double-disc set that contained all of his performances from that night. In many respects, the set was an entirely new album. Three songs — “Teo,” “Bright Mississippi,” “Just You, Just Me” — were previously unreleased, and nine others were restored to their full length after previously being released in edited forms (”Blue Monk,” “Well, You Needn’t,” “Rhythm-a-Ning,” “Blues Five Spot,” “Bemsha Swing,” “Evidence,” “Nutty,” “Epistrophy [Theme],” “Straight, No Chaser,” “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You,” “Ba-lue Bolivar Ba-lues-are”). Although the set isn’t exactly seminal, it nevertheless is highly enjoyable, capturing Monk in a relaxed small-group setting with Charlie Rouse, Larry Gales, and Ben Riley.//Thomas Erlewine

A smaller serving than the refurbished Live at the Jazz Workshop, Live in Tokyo is nevertheless a welcome meal for Monk fans. Previously an expensive Japan-only release, this excellently recorded 1963 visit finds the Monk/Charlie Rouse/Butch Warren/Frankie Dunlop quartet in enthusiastic fettle. On Monk's first visit to the country, he seems determined to offer as many sides of his art as possible. From "Just a Gigolo," given a solo reading that's sprightly even for this cherished favorite of the pianist, to extended takes on "Hackensack" and "Blue Monk" that provide dramatic climaxes to the show (Dunlop's interaction and interjections on the latter handily recall Art Blakey's explosive work on the 1954 Prestige version) this is one high-powered résumé. Listeners will understand why Monk was welcomed back lovingly to Japan several more times: judging from the audience response here, he made nothing but friends on this initial trip.

"Live in Tokyo" features an edition of the Monk Quartet (with Butch Warren- b, Frankie Dunlop- d) on display for the very first time in Japan. 1963 was in fact the first year Monk toured Japan, which of course has become a veritable motherlode of Monk devotees ever since. For whatever reason, Monk's music is extremely appealing to Japanese sensibilities; maybe they GET it a little more than the rest of us. Or maybe Monk was Japanese in a former lifetime. "Thelonious-san?"

In any event, this is fine live Monk that is on par with the fantastic Live at the It Club. Beginning on the first disc, there is a nearly 10-minute version of Monk's staple driving tune: "Straight, No Chaser". This gives way to his solo piano rendition of the popular song "Just A Gigolo", done stridingly and of course- with ample cheekiness. Lesser heard "Jackie-ing" is also in the fold on the first disc.

On the second disc (still Tokyo set), the tunes are "I'm Gettin' Sentimental Over You," "Hackensack, Blue Monk, and Epistrophy. There are fine and lengthy quartet outings on all three of the latter tunes.

All in all, this is Live Monk delivered with a true Monkian zest and it should be acquired by anybody who knows the power of the Monk one and wants a prime historical document (Monk coming to Japan for 1st time; now that was a revelation!)

And yet, because of the challenging nature of his music, his fabled personal eccentricities, and some trumped-up criminal charges which cost him his cabaret card (essentially denying him the opportunity to perform in any New York City establishment serving liquor, between 1951 and '57), recognition and success were a long time coming for this American original. The works contained on GENIUS OF MODERN MUSIC, VOL. 2 are some of the most remarkable performances and compositions in the history of American music, featuring some of Monk's greatest collaborations.

With its bluesy outline, classic rhythmic breaks and superb melodic contours, "Straight No Chaser" has been a jazz standard since Monk first introduced it with this recording. Art Blakey's animated 12-bar intro sets a perfect tempo with an implied triplet feeling, as Monk's solo proceeds directly from Al McKibbon's sturdy two-beat pulse and the drummer's polyrhythmic proddings. Monk's laid-back groove belies the fierce tension his rhythmic gamesmanship, percussive dissonances, pregnant pauses, horn-like phrases and bluesy bent tones impart.

All Monk tunes are full of teasing interactive themes and startling structural contrasts. As an accompanist, Monk doesn't simply feed vibraphone soloist Milt Jackson chordal backgrounds on the jagged "Criss Cross"--he enunciates a secondary theme of orchestral gravity. And few musicians are willing or able to take on the daunting melodic and rhythmic challenges of such abstract sculptures as the zig-zagging "Four In One," the skittering "Skippy," and the convoluted "Hornin' In" and "Sixteen.

When listening to these tracks, you should keep a couple of things in mind. First, recording technology wasn't too hot in 1947, and you can't expect the pristine, Rudy Van Gelder sound quality of 50s jazz. (Though compared to the 89 reissue, this Van Gelder edition sounds phenomenal.) Second, some of Monk's sidemen on this album didn't understand the new bop style very well, and were even more clueless on Monk's advanced ideas. (Even Art Blakey, one of Monk's best accompanists in the 50s, sounds a little confused here.) But these complaints aside, there's really phenomenal music here; tracks 7-16 (a trio with Blakey and bassist Gene Ramey) are especially marvelous, with classic recordings of Monk staples "Off Minor", "Ruby My Dear", "Well You Needn't" and "Introspection" as well as typically quirky takes on two standards ("April in Paris" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It"). The rest of the tracks are not quite up to the same standard due to the sidemen (Sahib Shihab provides the oddest alto saxophone sound ever on "Monk's Mood") but are still exciting. This set of 21 songs isn't quite as strong as Genius of Modern Music Volume 2, yet definitely essential for the Monk enthusiast.
