Tony Bennett's first hits collection chronicles his initial seven years as a recording artist, during which he frequently was found in the singles charts. Among this album's 12 selections, nine are chart songs: "Because of You" (number one for ten weeks, 1951), "Cold, Cold Heart" (number one for six weeks, 1951), "Rags to Riches" (number one for eight weeks, 1953), "Stranger in Paradise" (number two in 1954), "There'll Be No Teardrops Tonight" (number seven, 1954), "Just in Time" (number 46, 1956), "In the Middle of an Island" (number nine, 1957), "Ca, C'est L'amour" (number 22, 1957), and "Young and Warm and Wonderful" (number 23, 1958). Also featured is Bennett's non-charting debut single, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," a tango complete with castanets that first gained him notice. In retrospect, early Bennett is not Bennett at his best -- the song selection and arrangements are often so idiosyncratic and gimmicky they border on being novelty material, and the artist often over-sings in a mock-operatic style. But his intonation is always clear, his confidence always apparent. And there remains a historical interest -- this is Tony Bennett as pop idol, and he carries it off.

This CD is a quite unknown Christmas album by Tony Bennett and the London Symphony Orchestra. "With his warmth and upbeat attitude, Tony Bennett makes an excellent interpreter of Irving Berlin, whose songs share exactly those qualities. This was Bennett's second newly recorded album in his return to recording and to Columbia Records, and it's a classy collection, with Bennett breathing life into songs like "Isn't This a Lovely Day" and "Cheek to Cheek." He stuck to the backing of his regular piano-bass-drums trio, led by Ralph Sharon, with extra colors provided by guests Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie, and George Benson. The result is an understated, informal session that brings out the best in the already impressive material. The only real criticism of the album is that it's so short--just over 30 minutes--which, in the emerging CD era, seems pretty skimpy."

"For those of us who have long loved Tony Bennett, the singer's new album, "Tony Bennett on Holiday: A Tribute to Billie Holiday," is a sad affair. The 70-year-old crooner's voice now creaks where it once glided; it misses notes it once nailed to the wall. On this outing, his high spirits are as contagious as ever, but his elegant musicality is gone. Even in Bennett's best years, a tribute to Holiday would have been a dubious proposition, for it's hard to imagine two more different singers. He's a brassy bugle call of ringing declarations; she was a muted trumpet solo of sighs, hints, and whispers. This is especially obvious on the album's version of "God Bless the Child," which electronically combines Holiday's original track with Bennett's new one to create one of those hokey timewarp duets with the dead. But even on the 18 other songs associated with Holiday, one can hear how ill-suited Bennett's maximalism is for Holiday's minimalist arrangements. Even if he could still hit all the notes.

In Person!, part of a series of 1958 collaborations between Tony Bennett and Count Basie, has an unusually convoluted history. Bennett and Basie appeared together at the Latin Casino in Philadelphia in late November of 1958 in a performance that was recorded for commercial release — but when that tape proved unusable for technical reasons, producer Mitch Miller decided to bring the singer and the band back together in the studio in a pair of sessions a month later to re-create the concert program. For the original LP release, the producers also dubbed on applause, seeking to fake the ambience of an actual live performance, hence the title of the album. But the fake was obvious to all concerned, and when the album was re-released in 1994 as part of Sony Music's Mastersound series of audiophile CDs, the makers went back to the original session tapes and left off the applause. The result is a state-of-the-art reissue of what was also, as near as one can tell, the first of Bennett's albums to get a stereo release. As this was also the first reissue the album had apparently ever received, the tapes were in impeccable condition — the result is an extraordinary listening experience, even 40-plus years later. The original album, even with the tampering at the time, had a healthy swing to it, courtesy of the Basie band, and with the richness of tone and the close sound available to the makers of the CD, the album works even better. Bennett's sensitively nuanced intonation in the opening of "Pennies from Heaven" is now up close and personal, while the band's beat in the second half of the song is now crisper and more solid than ever. Ralph Sharon, Bennett's usual accompanist, is handling the piano chores (while Basie himself is credited as leader), and his finely articulated playing is also brought out crisply on "Lost in the Stars" and other tracks. It's all worth hearing, and more often than just once — it was records like this, as reconstituted properly for CD, that constituted the absolute golden end of the pop legacy of the late '50s.

"On his first children's album, Tony Bennett presses into service some familiar titles from The Great American Songbook, such as Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer's "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive," Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke's "Swinging on a Star," and Arlen, Billy Rose and E.Y. Harburg's "(It's Only) a Paper Moon." He also dips into his own repertoire for "Firefly," his 1958 hit. And he calls upon such partners as the Muppets' Elmo ("Little Things") and Kermit the Frog ("Bein' Green" and "Firefly"), and Rosie O'Donnell ("Put on a Happy Face"). All of that is very good, but the best parts of the collection are unexpected discoveries and commissions, such as Alan and Marilyn Bergman's newly written lyric for the Bill Evans-composed title song, Bobby Timmons and Oscar Brown, Jr.'s "Dat Dere" and Dr. Seuss' assertive declaration "Because We're Kids," with music by Frederick Hollander. The Ralph Sharon Quartet provides typically sympathetic accompaniment and a child's chorus jumps in here and there, while Bennett exudes his usual warmth, which is perfect for the mood of the album."

"This album marked Tony Bennett's return to recording after half a dozen years, his return to Columbia Records after 14 years, and the beginning of the third stage in his career. After the guest-star extravaganza Playin' with My Friends and the k.d. lang duets album What a Wonderful World, Tony Bennett goes his own way, settling into a mellow groove with The Art of Romance. Slow- and midtempo from top to bottom, Romance partakes mostly of deep-dish orchestral takes of classics (three by Johnny Mandel; two by Johnny Mercer). The end-of-the-affair "Where Do You Start" is the disc's quiet heart-stopper, while memories of happier days are conjured by Mercer’s "Time to Smile" and the wry Mandel/Dave Frishberg "Little Did I Dream." Perfect fall listening, alone or with a partner, this proves one of the richest albums of the singer’s late-career renaissance.

"Columbia Records took Tony Bennett's recording of the Beatles' "Something," which had appeared on the previous year's Tony Sings the Great Hits of Today! and had been a number 23 easy listening hit the previous spring, and put it at the top of his 1970 album, which otherwise was a collection arranged and conducted by Peter Matz (who handled the early Barbra Streisand albums) and produced by Teo Macero (who handled jazz artists like Miles Davis). While Bennett still wasn't comfortable with songs like "The Long and Winding Road" and "Everybody's Talkin'," he did manage to place favorites like Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Wave") and Cy Coleman on the song list, and Matz's tasteful arrangements assured that this record wouldn't be the debacle Great Hits had been. Not that Bennett was out of the woods yet."

Tony himself cited this as his favorite LP because many of the songs were arranged and conducted by the composers themselves. This version is remastered. I do not have the previous version so I can't compare the two. Suffice to say that it sounds great and you'll like it. There are two bonus tracks the "A Time For Love" lp. They too are movie songs, but are a bit superfluous.You might think that this is a compilation LP. judging from the title, but you'd be wrong. Save for track 7 (and the bonus tracks) all the songs were recorded specifically for this set.

Tony Bennett got a #70 hit out of the title track, a warm ballad written by Gordon Jenkins, and elsewhere he turned to old standbys like Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh, pulling another song from their show Little Me, in this case "On The Other Side Of The Tracks" ("I've Got Your Number" had appeared on I Wanna Be Around), and included a drum track, "Tricks," with Chico Hamilton. If you hadn't heard Bennett's previous two albums, I Left My Heart In San Francisco and I Wanna Be Around, This Is All I Ask would sound like a varied, satisfying collection, but if you had, you recognized the formula and realized it had been done slightly better before.

"Like The Art of Excellence, the album that marked Tony Bennett's return to recording in 1986, Astoria: Portrait of the Artist was a non-thematic collection of new and old songs on which Bennett was backed both by his regular trio, led by pianist Ralph Sharon, and the U.K. Orchestra. Bennett's new songwriting discovery was Charles DeForest, three of whose songs -- "When Do the Bells Ring for Me," "Where Do You Go from Love," and "I've Come Home Again" -- were included, along with songs by the Gershwins and Jerome Kern, standards like "Body and Soul," and even a re-recording of Bennett's initial Columbia recording, "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams." That recording had come in 1950, and the point of Astoria (which featured a cover photo of the young Bennett in the old neighborhood, with Bennett today standing in the same spot on the back) was to celebrate that 40-year anniversary while looking into both the past and the future, a task it accomplished admirably."

Working with arranger/conductor Frank DeVol, Tony Bennett here recorded a string-filled ballad session featuring standards like "September Song" and "Autumn Leaves." In so doing, he demonstrated how far he had come in controlling his instrument in his 10 years of recording. There was none of the oratorical style of his early hits. The restraint was especially noticeable on a song like "Till," which could have allowed for some of the old bel canto belting. Instead, Bennett's interpretations now had a detail and a nuance that marked him as a master interpreter.

"Disaster strikes. Accompanied by a sleeve note from company president Clive Davis, who forced this record down his throat, Tony Bennett is presented on the album cover in a garish illustration, wearing bellbottoms and a psychedelic tie. On the record, he sings "MacArthur Park" (well, some of it, anyway), "Eleanor Rigby" (most of which he recites instead of singing), "Something," and other "great hits of today." You'd think he might make peace at least with numbers like "The Look Of Love," but the only song he shows any real enthusiasm for is "Is That All There Is?," and even that is too cynical for his style. "
