J.S. Bach: Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello — Yo-Yo Ma, 2 CD (2001)

Classical | EAC log, cue + tracks | FLAC | 2 h 10 min | 250 & 261 MB | Theta Records
This album is Yo-Yo Ma's first recording of Bach's Cello Suites, digitally recorded in 1983.
"These profound works are essential items in the cello repertoire, and surely the cornerstone of the small body of works written for cello solo. Like their companion works, the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, the suites are virtuoso pieces that push the capacities of the solo instrument to the limit. Bach's uncanny compositional rigor is present in the degree to which he is able to imply vast realms of counterpoint where none is actually heard. But these are also expressive showpieces that allow room for individual interpretive personalities, and such crowd-pleasing performers as Yo-Yo Ma have often featured them in recital."

Yo-Yo Ma & The Silk Road Ensemble - Silk Road Journeys: Beyond The Horizon (2005)

Classical, World | Label: Sony BMG Music Entertainment | EAC Rip | FLAC(tracks, cue, log) | 01:04:10 | 312 MB
Beyond the Horizon is a fitting companion to the ensemble's 2002 release, When Strangers Meet. Both CDs marry multi-cultural music traditions to classical performance discipline. The music heard on Beyond the Horizon provided the soundtrack for a Japanese television series about the ancient Silk Road trade route. Yo-Yo Ma has said that the music on this album crosses boundaries of time and space, revealing the unity among seemingly different traditions... that it evokes the memory of the nomadic peoples who traveled and lived along the Silk Road.
Split into three sections entitled Enchantment, Origins, and New Beginnings, the CD's music blends haunting melodies with disciplined arrangements. Traditional western instruments like the harp, violin and cello commingle with the exotic sounds of the sarangi, sheng, kamancheh, tabla, pipa, dudak, tar and many others. Ma and his diverse ensemble developed the CD's repertoire by working closely with composers of such cultures as China, Iran, Azerbaijan and India among others.

Yo-Yo Ma - Obrigado Brazil (2003)

Classical, Latin / Brazil | FLAC (cue, log, scans) | 01:11:51 | 345 MB
This enchanting, flavorful CD finds the ever curious Yo-Yo Ma traveling to South America, and Brazil in particular. The music varies from classical to samba to bossa nova; the combinations range from guitar, flute, and cello to female voice (the remarkable Rosa Passos), cello, guitar, percussion, piano, and bass; to simple cello and piano; to cello and two guitars. The overriding element is rhythm; each selection has a beat which is both infectious and sensual, but the contexts are splendidly varied. "Dansa brasileira" has a Debussy-like, impressionistic flavor, "Dansa negra" is sultry with an easy melody, "1 x 0" is a dance scored for guitar, percussion, and cello with a solo clarinet riff. It's impossible to get bored or tired listening to this creative CD; it's unique -- just like Yo-Yo Ma himself -- and endlessly surprising.

Yo-Yo Ma Plays Bach (2001)

"Yo-Yo Ma Plays Bach" is one of several titles in Sony's new "Music For You" Series, easily identified by their artsy, photographic covers. The material on this CD has been available previously on CBS Masterworks. True, Ma does play music by Bach, but it is sonatas (originally intended for viola da gamba and not cello) by Bach, and the Sinfonia Concertante by Bach's youngest son, Johann Christian Bach. Not that Sony is lying and not that most people will care or feel cheated, but since this title is obviously aimed at classical novices, I just thought I'd set the record straight. In a similar vein, hopefully those that discover both Bach and Yo-Yo Ma via this disc will like what they hear, and go on to get one of Ma's two recordings of the Bach "Cello Suites" -- the real yardstick for composer and performer alike.

Yo-Yo Ma - Appassionato (2007)

Genre: Classical |Styles : Cello/Instrumental/Chamber Music | Label : BMG| front cvr/notes | 3% recovery | source: CD-DA |

This disc repackages tracks of a romantic mood from a variety of Yo-Yo Ma discs released over the course of his strong-selling album career. A few of them (track 2, for example) come from recordings of straight-ahead classical repertory, and there are several new tracks, but most are taken from the cellist's fabulously successful series of crossover recordings, including Obrigado Brazil, Appalachia Waltz, and his collection of music by Italian film composer Ennio Morricone. These have all been innovative attempts to communicate with a wide audience, and it is a bit disconcerting to see Ma backing off from such innovation with this relatively conventional package of excerpts. There is, however, nothing whatsoever wrong with what Ma does here, taken on its own terms; his warm but never overdone way with a tune is everywhere in evidence, and the program does constitute a sort of de facto encore disc, mixing single movements of classical works with melodies from semi-popular traditions, of the kind Ma has never recorded but that, 50 years ago, would have seemed normal to any number of concert artists. It is also nice to hear a couple of selections from the Morricone disc, less familiar than blockbusters such as Appalachia Waltz; the concluding excerpt from the soundtrack to The Mission, with Morricone himself conducting, shows Ma's ear for instant crowd-pleasers nobody else has thought of. The bottom line is that the disc works as a pleasant crowd-pleaser and as a sampler of Ma's later work, even if one of his original discs will be more deeply satisfying.

Yo-Yo Ma is unquestionably one of the most fascinating performers of classical music active today. He is possessed of a ferocious technique, innate musicality and a vast imagination. From his Silk Road project to his collaborations with artists from Bobby McFerrin to Tan Dun, he always seeks new and fascinating ventures. Consisting of four French pieces from the late Nineteenth Century, La Belle Epoque is not as unique as some of his undertakings but it does have its own special twist. These pieces were originally written for violin-and for Ma to perform them flawlessly on cello with its much larger fingerboard, thicker strings, and more difficult technique is amazing. That he does so in a way that is so convincing throughout is nearly miraculous. Sonatas by Gabriel Faure and Cesar Frank are the most substantial works on the disc. The Faure in particular is a delight, with its exuberant third movement and introspective second. Complementing these sonatas are the Meditation from Jules Massenet's opera Thais and Camille Saint-Saens' Havanaise. Ma's interpretation of the Massenet work is truly intense and Romantic, but not always meditative. His control of the line, in every aspect, from dynamics to tempo to vibrato shows him a master of the musical phrase. Pianist Kathryn Stott matches Ma superbly throughout every turn. But it is in the Saint-Saens, a delightful and almost comic Spanish dance alternating with virtuoso showpiece, that Ma really shines. His obvious joy in the music, coupled with his astonishing ability, makes this disc a real pleasure.
