One of the most prolific as well as one of the most popular pianists in jazz history, Oscar Peterson simply dazzles the listener with his melodic flourishes and glib orchestrations. He makes it all look so easy to accomplish as he glides across the piano, but his technique is always impeccable. In this instance Peterson is in the rare position of presiding over his own tribute. Live at Town Hall is an all-star lineup paying homage to the master at the New York venue in 1996. Sharing the stage with Peterson on this set are vocalists Shirley Horn and the Manhattan Transfer, Clark Terry on trumpet and vocals, Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Roy Hargrove on fluegelhorn, Milt Jackson on vibraphone, Benny Green on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown and Neils-Henning Orsted Pederson on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums.

This is another stunning Peterson album. As the title indicates it was recorded in Russia in 1974 and the playing is great. As Benny Green says in the sleeve notes it would be fascinating to know whether the Russian audience could pick up on the little quotes that Oscar puts in his solos.

Its a mixture of solo, duo and trio tracks with Neils Pederson on bass and Jake Hanna on drums. Starting out with solo Piano, Peterson plays a number of stunning solo interpretations of which perhaps the best are ‘I Concentrate On You’ and his own composition ‘Place St. Henri’. This last track has some of phenomenal stride playing at amazing speed. Then Neils Pederson joins him and the remainder of disc 1 is Bass and Piano.
Disc 2 starts with a superb trio version of ‘Take the A Train’. There are multiple highlights on disc 2, including a great version of ‘Just Friends’ and perhaps best of all ‘Hallelujah Time’ (mis-titled on the disc as ‘Hallelujah Trail’). Some really fast Boogie Woogie is in this tune (which Oscar was specialist at early in career) leading to a classic down-home blues finish.
You really can’t wrong with this double CD. There are a few Peterson albums that I would buy ahead of this (1975 with Joe Pass Salle Pleyel for one) but not many.

If you’re a serious jazz collector who has 50, 60, or more Oscar Peterson CDs in your collection, you can’t help but be amazed by the pianist’s consistent nature. Many of his releases are predictably excellent, and only on rare occasions has he recorded a weak album. Recorded live at Tokyo’s ~Shibuya Hall in 1982, this two-CD set finds Peterson leading a quartet that employs Joe Pass on guitar, Martin Drew on drums, and Danish improviser Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen on upright bass. There are no dull or weak moments; the bop-oriented quartet soars on material that ranges from Walter Donaldson’s “You Look Good to Me” and Charlie Parker’s “Now’s the Time” to Peterson’s own “The Fallen Warrior,” which he dedicates to South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela. At the time, South Africa still had the deplorable apartheid system, and Mandela was still in prison — back in 1982, we could only dream about a world in which he was president of South Africa, and countries like Russia, Hungary, and Poland had capitalist governments. Not all of the musicians are present on all of the songs, which is a good thing because it makes the concert a bit less predictable. Peterson plays unaccompanied solo piano on Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight” and a medley of Michel Legrand’s “Watch What Happens” and pianist Bill Evans’ “Waltz for Debby,” while Pass is by himself on “Easy Living.” And bassist Pedersen is the lone wolf on the brief “Future Child.” Although Freedom Song falls short of essential, Peterson’s devoted fans will find it to be a consistently rewarding document of his 1982 visit to Japan. - Alex Henderson

They perform great solos and know how to work together to make the music really sing. The drummer on this album (Karriem Riggins) acquits himself very well, too. You get a nice mix: a little bop, some ballads, some blues. Just fabulous! Get comfortable, pour yourself your favorite libation and just let these gents take you on a relaxing and satisfying journey into Another Time and Space.

Here’s a jazz trio par excellence, making full use in 1956 of the setting’s possibilities of airtight collaboration and shifting emphasis. Oscar Peterson and his classic trio-mates, Herb Ellis on guitar and Ray Brown on bass, heading straight at a lively selection, never hint that they might have liked a drummer along. The model, of course, is Nat King Cole’s drumless trio, but Peterson also had been inspired by the rococo and rapid fire of Art Tatum. With breathtaking, huge-handed technique, he unerringly swings deep and high, with a profound sense of rootedness. Ellis and Brown never slouch. Ellis takes a star turn on “How About You?” while on “Swinging on a Star,” Brown displays his own mastery and panache. –Peter Monaghan

This is a true classic. Flügelhornist Clark Terry, who long has had the happiest sound in jazz, performs ten enthusiastic and generally hard-swinging songs with the Oscar Peterson Trio (which at the time included bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen). Terry is quite exuberant on such pieces as “Brotherhood of Man” and “Mack the Knife,” and even the ballads (”They Didn’t Believe Me” and “I Want a Little Girl” among them) are full of excitement. This session, though, is best known for having introduced Terry’s humorous “Mumbles” vocals, which can be heard on that piece and “Incoherent Blues.” This delightful and essential release has fortunately been reissued on CD.
