SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON: The Chess Years Box Set (4CDs-320kbps)
We live in an age when superlatives have no more value than slang. An age of double-think and Newspeak where almost everything is the opposite of what it seems. Pop groups reform because they're broke or can't meet their tax bills and the press hail them as 'legendary'. An album of inferior material left for years in the tape store, is released and touted as a 'long-lost masterpiece'.
Everything teeters on the extreme edge of excellence. The merely ordinary seems mediocre.
It was not always this way. There was a time when superlatives were earned and even then grudgingly given. During the sixties there was a Blues Boom in Europe. Annual Blues Festivals crossed the Atlantic and played to ecstatic audiences. Words like 'legendary' were used then as well, but with somewhat more justification. Unfortunately some of the 'legends' had spent years, sometimes decades, in obscurity and hardship and were past their best. But some thrived. None more so than Sonny Boy Williamson.
So much to do with the blues is the stuff of legend. The blues singer was the shaman of his community and, like a witch-doctor, he adopted exotic names and whole identities to enhance his image and distance himself from the exigences of life. Many were thought to have sold their souls to the devil to acquire their skills. It was said of Sonny Boy Williamson. The songs they sang, when not concerned with the vicissitudes of love, drew on a lexicon of allegory, metaphor and euphemism. Copyright laws were unknown and inapplicable where so much was held as common property, a vast compendium of material that each singer felt free to draw upon and call his own. When it came to recounting their lives, most bluesmen interwove fact and fantasy as they saw fit, embroidering drab, mean reality with outlandish tales of sights seen and deeds done. During the Sixties, when every other fan had a notebook in his hand, mere mention of a famous name was enough to call forth a stream of reminiscences and self-aggrandising claims that were duly and breathlessly noted down..... continunes on the cd notes that you downloaded..
