Sixteen Stone is the debut album of British rock band Bush. Released in 1994 through Trauma Records, it boasted numerous successful singles and is widely regarded as the band's most popular album.
On the Billboard Music Charts (North America), Sixteen Stone peaked at #4 on the Heatseekers and Billboard 200 charts. The album spawned two Top 40 singles. After about 6 months of promotion for Sixteen Stone, the album began to sell wildly, once "Comedown" and "Glycerine" struck America. U.S. sales for Sixteen Stone finally passed the six million mark in 2010. The album overall had fairly good reception, although one critic mentions that the band sounds too much like Seattle rockers Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

REVIEW OF ''SIXTEEN STONE'' by Sputnikmusic.com

Ah yes Bush, just another grunge band only this time they were from England. Keeping a low profile in their native country, they somehow hit the mainstream in America within a very short time period. Going from playing in lonely London night clubs to Arena sized venues in America seemed like a dream come true for the guys from Shepherd’s Bush. Their debut album was ‘Sixteen Stone’ which after being re-released on a major label eventually sold 6 million copies in America alone.
Opener Everything Zen which served as a launching platform for their other more successful singles is a very good start. The guitars here are very catchy with a lot of memorable riffs. Gavin Rossdale delivers some pretty rough vocals that fit the song perfectly. An awesome breakdown with only drum beats in the background before exploding into the final chorus. Easily one of their best songs, ever.
Little Things uses the same formula, starting off quite promising only the final result isn’t as spectacular. The drumming is really consistent on this track however the vocals and guitars seemed to messed up for my liking.
Comedown was another one of their popular songs. A slow and steady drum beat starts things off which pretty much drives the whole song. Gavin’s voice is quite raspy on this track. The chorus “..I don’t want to come back down from this cloud” is likely to be stuck in your head for a while. The other single, Machinehead is another enjoyable track. The drumming is really solid here carrying the song the whole way. Some pretty catchy guitar hooks and weird vocal effects compliment the song well.
We all know the ballad Glycerine which received a lot of airplay back in the day. Gavin takes centre stage here, delivering a flawless (in my opinion) vocal performance over some mildly distorted guitars. He knows what he’s capable of and sticks within his vocal range, ensuring his voice doesn’t crack like many other vocalists from the grunge era. His moaned vocals during the chorus and the accompanying orchestral instruments give the song a very ‘epic’ feel.
They definitely picked the right songs for the singles. However, there is also quite a bit of filler. Bomb and the closing track, X-Girlfriend add nothing but disrupt the flow on an otherwise excellent album. Another often criticized aspect of Bush are the lyrics, which range from odd (“Everything Zen”)
Sixteen Stone is often overlooked and dismissed as a Nirvana rip-off when it should not. Along with Collective Soul, Foo Fighters, Live, Everclear, Weezer and Creed (to some extent), Bush were quite influential in how modern rock and the post-grunge era shaped out to be. This is easily their best album and unfortunately they took a turn for the worse soon after. Get this album for a good taste of 90s post-grunge.

Bush - Razorblade Suitcase (FLAC) 1996

    Artist: Bush
    Album: Razorblade Suitcase
    Year: 1996
    Genre: Alternative Rock
    Format: FLAC
    Front & Back covers
    No. Of Tracks: 13

    Musicians:

    Nigel Pulsford – guitar

    Robin Goodridge – drums

Razorblade Suitcase is the second album by the British post-grunge band Bush, released in November 1996 via Trauma Records. The album's working title was Ghost Medicine, but was changed for unknown reasons. The title is a line from the lyrics of the song "Synapse". It has a slightly darker tone than Bush's previous album, Sixteen Stone, which led to comparisons between Razorblade Suitcase and Nirvana's album In Utero, because some believed Bush sounded similar to Nirvana, and Steve Albini recorded both albums. Albini had also recorded the Pixies' breakthrough LP Surfer Rosa, and was co-art directed by Vaughan Oliver and Adrian Philpott. Vaughan Oliver had also done the artwork for Surfer Rosa. Gavin Rossdale made statements around the time of the release that he only hoped that Bush would be one day as successful as the Pixies were in England.
Sixteen Stone was a radio-friendly grunge rock album that sold millions of copies. Razorblade Suitcase, however, was more abrasive than the past album and as a result did not sell as well. However, Razorblade Suitcase reached the number-one spot on the Billboard 200, while Sixteen Stone peaked at the number-four spot.
Despite the album selling fewer copies than Sixteen Stone in the US, it marked a commercial peak for the band in their native Britain - it reached number four on the UK Albums Chart, whilst "Swallowed" and "Greedy Fly" both peaked in the Top 20 of the UK Singles Chart. The album is widely believed to have signaled the demise of the "grunge" genre, as it was one of the last widely-known albums released bearing a grunge-sound.

REVIEW OF ''RAZORBLADE SUITCASE'' by Sputnikmusic.com

Rising from grunge, just in time for the alternative craze of the mid Nineties, this album sounds almost like it hasn't decided which way to go. Of course, there are the frequent Grunge hits, but there are just some songs that really don't belong on the album at all. Take Swallowed, for example. It's a masterful grunge piece, as dark as it is rocking. But then again, take a look at History, a noisy, dirty and very unpolished song that falls in the middle of grunge and unlistenable noise. The song features fast riffs, and British as they can be vocals. The chorus is a puzzle that really doesn't fit with the verse. The song is different, but not as enjoyable as many others. Alternative? Perhaps. Grunge? Perhaps. What is it? Little more than noise.

Still though, as far this album is concerned, there are some downright spectacular songs ranging from the slow, mournful piece that is Synapse, to the 70's punk/90's emo influenced A Tendency To Start Fires. Both songs are great, if different, and equal in terms of performance. The vocals especially. Gavin is arguably one of the best Grunge singers of all time, with only a few exceptions. They suit the songs greatly, which are little more than a few power chords being hammered out of a guitar. The occasional solo comes in, with incredible results. Usually an unrehearsed blend of heavy distortion and occasional un-awarness of the sound, they're fun to listen to and seem to fit the songs every time.

Of course, some songs just fail to impress. Bonedriven is a cheap Swallowed mimic, but slower and more boring. Mouth is a slow, cheap and very, very untalented song that features a very simple guitar, and the I-don't-care drums, minus the passion. The whole song itself lacks passion, as the band member do they're best, but end up almost trying to sound unexciting and very untalented in terms of they're music. The chorus is okay, featuring a simple chord structure that rips off Smells Like Teen Spirit to a rather large extent. The vocals on both of these songs are quite fine, if a little dull to suit the music. Where are the intellegent lyrics? The crazy metaphors, the shouts of mayhem? Where?! Not here, that's for sure. Sure, they may feature some mild parts that can catch your ear for a limited time, but the little things cannot save the big aspects; the noise-infested, almost brainless filler songs. Oh, those filler songs! What can we do about them? Answer: Skip. Simple as.
There are a few lackluster songs, sure, but some songs burst with beauty and enrgy. The Glycerine influenced, string chased solo guitar piece that can bring a tear to your face. The hard, rough edge of the singles, Greedy Fly and Swallowed, and the slow paced, majestic finale track Distant Voices, which, to a certain, extent, features some amazing, folk-sy guitar playing and the best vocal performance on the album. The album's slower, less Bush-grunge songs are definitely the best, which display they're softer side. Songs like Distant Voices and Synapse feature some insanely gloomy melodies, but under the surface is a relatively happy song. The best by far though, is the powerful Swallowed, which is they're best single and/or song. The song has everything, a slow, climbing verse with promise, and then the chorus that features the best riff on the album, save for the mini-solo int Distant Voices, and also features the little solo that could, a melodic and fierce solo that really isn't heard that much on the album.
So. Is this album worth picking up? Yes, but be prepared for many filler songs or songs that sound exactly alike. This album would've definitely scored higher if it was fined down three songs, but sadly this album has some very cavernous lows. The songs that have an annoying riff with a very squeaky distortion, and the lyrics that make no sense and aren't even entertaining. Otherwise, the album has some incredible songs, mainly three songs that are definite classics in the Bush library. So, if you're looking for a good, rip roaring 90's flashback, you could definitely do worse than pick this up. Just ignore a few filler songs.

The Science Of Things is the third studio album by British post-grunge band Bush. Released in 1999, it was the last Bush album under Trauma Records. It features many electronic influences and, while successful, sold less than its predecessors, reaching a platinum certification and #11 in the US.

REVIEW OF ''THE SCIENCE OF THINGS'' by Samthebassman/Sputnikmusic.com

After Gavin Rossdale & the boys hit it big with "sixteen stone", they were labelled as grunge copycats, riding on a wave of success created by bands such as Nirvana & Pearl Jam but the release of 1999's "The Science Of Things" proved they may be more than simple grungy clones.
The album kicks of with killer opener "Warm Machine" which hits you like a tonne of bricks with it's wall of sound, big drums and crunchy guitars . When combined with rossdale's catchiest chorus ever you know that this album might just deliver something special. "Warm Machine" is followed by "Jesus Online" which starts with an almost funky drumbeat and some tasty bass slides but unfortunately this track doesn't live up to early expectations, with a somewhat drab chorus. This is then followed by the lead single "The Chemicals Between Us", which in my opinion is one of the best tracks the band has ever put to tape. Another a big guitar riff leads the song in and is followed by a typical rossdale vocal piece and almost electronic sounding drums. The bassline is again smooth and relaxed, almost like the lyrical bravado spouted by rossdale. Basically this is a cool track.
Another big guitar riff brings in "English Fire", but with the annoying drum sound I usually skip through this one. A palm muted guitar riff brings in "Spacetravel", another rocking track, which suprisingly deals with the issue of spacetravel, government and the propaganda that comes with it.
The next track is the fantastically down tempo groover "40 miles from the sun", this is one of the best tracks on the album. Perfect song to just sit and mull over, it is slightly abstract lyrically but still somehow makes perfect sense, even features an almost jazzy outro.
It is then straight back to the rock with "Prizefighter", which will keep the masses happy with its typical rifforama and tasty harmonic use, but not one of my personal favourites.
"The Disease Of The Dancing Cats" see's Bush doing something no other grunge track I've heard do, using an electronically laden bridge part and basically taking a few risks. A fantasically hard rocker which see's rossdale commentating on the plight of the enviroment, this is another definite highlight from the album.
"Altered States" is almost a funk rock number with it's highly danceable bass - drum rhythm section, reminds me almost of Soungarden's "Spoonman", cool track.
Another killer down tempo number, "Dead Meat", follows. A track which see's rossdale at his venomous best lyrically. This is one song that seem's to fire me up everytime I hear it.
This is then followed by the crown jewel of the album, the very moving "Letting The Cables Sleep", lush strings embrace this song and bring it to another level. This is my favourite vocal performance from rossdale. My favourite track on the album.
The album is brought to a close by the Rage Against The Machine-esque "Mind Changer", a hard rocker with a cool bassline it is a suitable end to an excellent album.
This is an album which see's Bush taking a few risks but not straying to much from their winning formula.

Bush - Golden State (FLAC) 2001

    Year: 2001

Golden State is the fourth studio album by British post-grunge band Bush, released in 2001. Stylistically, it was seen as a return to the post-grunge that Bush became famous for in contrast to their more recent experimental work. However, it ended up being their worst-selling album to date, not even reaching the Platinum status their other albums did. This would also prove to be the last album to feature Nigel Pulsford and Dave Parsons. Bush would not release another studio album until ten years later with The Sea of Memories. The liner notes of Golden State cite the album in memory of Ian Lowery, founder of The Folk Devils.

REVIEW OF ''GOLDEN STATE'' by by Stephen Thomas Erlewine/AllMusic.com

Like many bands of their era, Bush was sucked into the idea that rock bands are only relevant if they incorporate electronica ideas -- a move that sank their third album, The Science of Things, and effectively derailed their career at a crucial time when post-grunge bands were falling by the wayside in an alarming fashion. This caused Bush to stumble, not just artistically but commercially, and they faded from the mainstream spotlight for a few years before mounting a comeback in the fall of 2001 with Golden State. The simple cover art, looking for all the world like advance art, signals that this a return to basics, which it is -- this is a return to the sound of Sixteen Stone, complete with big, grandiose production propelled by ballsy grunge riffs and real hooks in the guitars and vocals. They never sound as somber or as self-conscious as they did on the Steve Albini-produced Razorblade Suitcase, nor do they sound as out of their element as they did on Science -- they sound comfortable and powerful, rocking hard, turning out songs that are not only catchy, but that hold together and cohere over the course of an album. Though there aren't singles as grabbing as the songs that propelled Sixteen Stone to multi-platinum status, this is as consistent an album as any Bush has ever made, keeping a steady pace throughout its 12 songs and delivering on almost every track. It doesn't sound hip or current in 2001 by any means -- it sounds charmingly retro, as a matter of fact, sorta stuck in 1994 -- but it's better than most records in its vein, and that counts for something even if it doesn't burn up the charts like its predecessors.
