Introduction:
Dire Straits' 'Brothers In Arms' needs no introduction. It was arguably the Compact Disc's 'killer-app' album which almost single-handedly launched the new digital format over two decades ago into households across the world, not to mention bringing digital recording technology into studios. Two decades later at Mark Knopfler’s own recording facility at British Grove Studios, the album gets the high-resolution surround-sound treatment we've all waited for. Renowned audio engineer, Chuck Ainlay -- known to some as "Mr Digital," explains to High Fidelity Review's Martin Fendt how he remixed this project to DVD-Audio and SACD formats.
Before going into all the nitty-gritty, it is worth noting that the honour of following in Neil Dorfsman's footsteps to remix Dire Straits 'Brothers In Arms' (BIA) onto high resolution DVD-Audio and SACD came to Chuck Ainlay mainly by circumstance, since he has been the default producer and recording engineer for all the recent Mark Knopfler solo albums as well as the last couple of Dire Straits ones 'On Every Street' and the live album 'On the Night.' Once he received the call and agreed to take on the project, the most pressing task was to actually locate the original master tapes -- which as luck would have it, were scattered far and wide.
Ainlay recalls: "When we started out with the search for the tapes, we assumed that for an album of that magnitude these things would be highly protected in a vault and everyone would know precisely where all the assets were. But as it turned out, some of the reels were in LA, some were in Europe in the Mercury vault, and some were found in Mark’s own vault. In fact I'd been asked to come over to British Grove Studios in London a couple of times to mix the album, only to realise that we didn't have all the assets we needed. It was not until the second week of January 2005, when I went through all the notation, that I was pretty certain we had everything necessary to mix the album.
The Mix - From the Listener’s Perspective:
Unlike many so called surround-sound mixes which just use the rears sparingly and for ambience, Ainlay intended that for this project, the rear speakers would be highly utilised. Indeed, there is information placed in the rears which is as loud as that in the fronts. And we are not just talking about effects and 'jingle-jangles' in the back. To this end, and since this is not a live performance, Ainlay takes the artistic liberty of utilising the rears to a large extent thus surrounding the listener by the music as if he/she is 'centre-stage.' He also makes the soundstage even larger by using effects to produce dimension 'beyond' the speakers themselves. He was of course mindful of the fact that the two 'featured' parts of Dire Straits were Mark Knopfler's lead singing and also his solo guitar playing. Consequently, Ainlay feels that for the most part, Mark's guitar playing needs to be in front of the listener. "However, there are some deviations from that idea," he notes, "such as when some of Mark's acoustic guitars and rhythm instruments are placed left and right rear, complemented by various ethereal 'off-in-the-distance' effects."
For example on one of the songs the saxophone is placed in the right rear while a guitar comes from a far-off place using the left rear, and all this whilst not distracting the listener from focusing on the actual lead subjects in the front and centre. Regarding the lead vocals, Ainlay carefully keeps these in the centre channel primarily, which also spreads out to the adjacent left and right fronts, being about 6dB down in these. The result is that even if the listener is off-centre, he would still find the vocal imaging to be anchored straight up in the front centre.
However, so as to make the vocals 'float' a bit more, Ainlay pulls them very subtly away from the front speakers and towards the back by putting a sparing amount also in the rear speakers. This effect is also aided by the judicious application of delay effects, harmonisers and reverb, etc. to create dimensions beyond the front speakers and give that same sort of depth which one would be used to hearing in a stereo presentation.
Now for drums and percussion: Where possible, and with the help of ambient microphones, Ainlay draws the cymbals back slightly and by putting them mostly in the front but with some also in the rear. The toms also float back into the room somewhat by doing the same thing, whereas the snare and the kick-drum are more obviously anchored on the front wall, whilst the piano is spread with effects so it fills the room entirely. There are also appearances of a venerable Hammond B3 organ, which, in some cases has been doubled-tracked such that there are moments when one of the Hammond B3 tracks is in the front left/right, while the other emanates from the rear left/right, to result in a huge swirling sound all round the listener.
Synth pads are also used to effect in both the fronts and the rears simultaneously which 'fill-up' the room. But besides these more ethereal 'paddy' elements, Ainlay is deliberately more discrete about placement of other cornerstone elements including accordions, saxes or percussion instruments which usually feature in the front left/right or surrounds.
Thoughts on DVD-Audio and SACD Formats:
And now to the very end product: As touched-upon earlier, Bob Ludwig performed all the EQ in the digital domain from the PCM 96kHz 24-bit 5.1 Nuendo tracks at his extensive facility in Portland, Maine. This was basically just a digital transfer through his EQ and compression at 96/24 for the DVD-Audio version, but then he had to resample it for SACD.
"I think both the SACD and DVD-Audio products sound great," enthuses Ainlay. "However, from the purist point of view, I do prefer the 24-bit Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP) DVD-Audio (on the DualDisc) over the DSD hybrid-SACD version. On a previous Mark Knopfler album, 'Shangri-La,' we mixed to lots of different formats: We had a Nuendo session running 96/24; We also mixed to a DSD Sonoma system. Interestingly, as much as we had heard about how great DSD recording technology was, we nevertheless felt that it altered the sound to some degree, whereas the 96/24 LPCM was more representative of the original mix straight out of the console. In addition, we also mixed it to half-inch analogue tape at 30 IPS, as well as to 15 IPS, one-inch tape in two-track. And everyone in the room had the same opinion that the 96kHz 24-bit PCM was the closest representation of the console bus, and coming second was the 15 IPS one-inch analogue tape. Thereafter, it was a toss-up of which came in third and fourth -- i.e. was it the Sonoma DSD, or the half inch 30 IPS tape? So going forward now, we have basically determined that we prefer 96kHz 24-bit PCM for recording over the Sonoma DSD. I was really surprised at that. I thought that I would like the Sonoma DSD recording the best, but after speaking with other people and Bob Ludwig himself -- who is highly knowledgeable of DSD -- we feel there is nevertheless is an inescapable 'softening' effect which DSD imparts. To me this seems to emulate analogue to some degree, but is not necessarily the closest representation of the console output."

Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler - Discography (1978-2005)
Dire Straits were a British rock band, formed by Mark Knopfler (lead vocals and lead guitar), his younger brother David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), John Illsley (bass guitar and backing vocals), and Pick Withers (drums and percussion). The band were managed by Ed Bicknell, and was active between 1977 and 1995. Although the band were formed in an era when punk rock was at the forefront, Dire Straits played a more bluesy style, albeit with a stripped-down sound that appealed to audiences weary of the overproduced stadium rock of the 1970s.[citation needed] In their early days, Mark and David requested that pub owners turn down their sound so that patrons could converse while the band played, an indication of their unassuming demeanor. Despite this oddly self-effacing approach to rock and roll, Dire Straits soon became hugely successful, with their first album going multi-platinum globally.
Throughout the band's career Mark Knopfler was the songwriter and driving force behind the group. The band's best-known songs include: "Sultans of Swing", "Money for Nothing", "Brothers in Arms", "Walk of Life", "So Far Away", "Romeo and Juliet" and "Tunnel of Love". Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler have sold in excess of 120 million albums to date.

Dire Straits' minimalist interpretation of pub rock had already crystallized by the time they released their eponymous debut. Driven by Mark Knopfler's spare, tasteful guitar lines and his husky warbling, the album is a set of bluesy rockers. And while the bar band mentality of pub-rock is at the core of Dire Straits -- even the group's breakthrough single, "Sultans of Swing," offered a lament for a neglected pub rock band -- their music is already beyond the simple boogies and shuffles of their forefathers, occasionally dipping into jazz and country. Knopfler also shows an inclination toward Dylanesque imagery, which enhances the smoky, low-key atmosphere of the album. While a few of the songs fall flat, the album is remarkably accomplished for a debut, and Dire Straits had difficulty surpassing it throughout their career.

Rushed out less than nine months after the surprise success of Dire Straits' self-titled debut album, the group's sophomore effort, Communiqué, seemed little more than a carbon copy of its predecessor with less compelling material. Mark Knopfler and co. had established a sound (derived largely from J.J. Cale) of laid-back shuffles and intricate, bluesy guitar playing, and Communiqué provided more examples of it. But there was no track as focused as "Sultans of Swing," even if "Lady Writer" (a lesser singles chart entry on both sides of the Atlantic) nearly duplicated its sound. As a result, Communiqué sold immediately to Dire Straits' established audience, but no more, and it did not fare as well critically as its predecessor or its follow-up.

Singer, songwriter and ace guitarist Mark Knopfler is the impressive sum of several very appealing parts. His voice is a smoky mixture of Bob Dylan's acidic whine, Tom Waits' tubercular snore and J.J. Cale's breathy, marbles-in-the-mouth whisper. He writes such songs as "Sultans of Swing" and "Once upon a Time in the West" with the cinematic flair of Bruce Springsteen, the hall-of-mirrors imagery of classic Dylan and the slashing thrusts of Neil Young's bayonetlike realism. Finally, Knopfler's guitar style is a shotgun wedding of jazzy chording and harmonic tangents descended from Django Reinhardt and Wes Montgomery, the no-nonsense electric blues of B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix' string-bending sensuality and James Burton's country-pop sheen.
On Dire Straits' first two albums, Knopfler wore his influences proudly on his sleeve. But when he pinned them on the band, they stood out like scarlet letters. Dire Straits and Communiqué were like roll calls of the star's patron saints, yet all too often Knopfler's hero worship overshadowed both the richly romantic tapestries of his tunes and the tasty team playing of bassist John Illsley, drummer Pick Withers and now-departed rhythm guitarist David Knopfler.
On Making Movies, Mark Knopfler pushes back those influences, rolls up his sleeves and knuckles down to the business of cutting a Dire Straits disc that's far greater than the sum of its parts. "A house of cards/Was never built for shock," he admits in "Solid Rock," the snarling, guitar-driven number that best describes what the new record is all about. Indeed, compared to his crystalline elegance and fragile introspection on the first two LPs, the creator of Making Movies now seems as bold, confident and determined to take chances in life, love and rock & roll as the brassy rollerball queen he watches with such fascination in "Skateaway." On this album, Knopfler is making "movies" — i.e., songs, some of which remind us of films: Carousel, Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story, Cabaret, et al. — not just acting them out.
And what a difference the right producer makes! On 1978's Dire Straits, Muff Winwood simply succumbed to the bleached-out tonalities suggested by the cold, misty blues of "Down to the Waterline" and the lurid yet limpid pink-neon afterglow of "Wild West End." (On the import LP The Honky Tonk Demos, Dire Straits' own scrappy 1977 eight-track demo of "Sultans of Swing" conjured up the composition's carnival atmosphere better than their Winwood-produced hit single did.) For Communiqué, Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett merely enriched the R&B textures in the group's sultry sound, marching Knopfler's instrumental chops into the breach at the expense of his material and the sorely underrated rhythmic tension between Illsley and Withers.
Jimmy Iovine, who coproduced Making Movies with Mark Knopfler, succeeds where the others failed: he builds the album from the songs up. True, the addition of E Street Band pianist Roy Bittan brings out colors that were only implied in David Knopfler's workmanlike strumming on Dire Straits and Communiqué. But it's Iovine who puts all the pieces together here: gritty guitar runs, muscular drumming and bass playing, sympathetic keyboards, sensitive and assertive singing. Then, after the groundwork has been laid and the shots set up, Mark Knopfler steps forward to star in and direct each highly emotional but never cheaply melodramatic scene.
Knopfler fires most of his big guns on side one, which begins with a riveting, eight-minute romance called "Tunnel of Love." Bittan's opening quotation from Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel Waltz" quickly metamorphoses into a brief, cascading piano figure that carries us straight into the boardwalk world of middle-period Bruce Springsteen. There, amid the deafening roar of roller coasters, cars and people who are frantically racing toward nowhere, a young man and woman find safety and solace for a few precious hours. But where Springsteen would probably have turned their love into a grandstand play, Knopfler simply takes what he can get and lets it go ("I could have caught up with her easy enough but something must have made me stay").
Throughout "Tunnel of Love," Mark Knopfler dramatizes this close encounter by using his guitar as a Greek chorus. The singer practically spits out the early verses while dodging his own instrumental licks as they ricochet against Illsley and Withers' solid wall of sound. Later, as Knopfler walks alone through the "carousel and the carnival arcades," waiting for another night and another girl, he wraps his voice like a ratty old raincoat around Bittan's gently tinkling piano and the long guitar solo that ends the track. Somehow, the evocative moan of the artist's guitar suggests a truth much deeper than the carnival-as-life metaphor has revealed.
As fine as "Tunnel of Love" is, Making Movies' masterpiece is its second song, "Romeo and Juliet." For once, Knopfler's words coalesce into something more than a mood, a clever skit ("Les Boys") or a neat vignette ("Skateaway"). Lyrically, he breaks through and makes us care, even cry, for the street kid who's lost his girl because her dream of success came true and his didn't (though they shared the same dream). Now she doesn't need her lover anymore, and when he comes around, she crushes him with her casual "hey it's Romeo you nearly gimme a heart attack/He's underneath the window she's singing hey la my boyfriend's back/You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that/Anyway what you gonna do about it?" All he can do is realize that she's suddenly in another league, that she thinks of him (if at all) as little more than a comic figure from her past.
In the choruses, Mark Knopfler reaches peaks of passion he's never before attained:
Juliet the dice were loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded in my heart...
Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die
And there's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong Juliet?
But, of course, such pleading is useless — tragic, devastating, even funny, yet ultimately useless. We're moved, but the subject of the song certainly isn't.
Musically, Knopfler cradles "Romeo and Juliet" with a tender melodic reprise from Bruce Springsteen's "Jungleland," which he plays beautifully on a National guitar, giving the tune the timeless feeling of, say, Rod Stewart's "Mandolin Wind." There are no hot lead-guitar breaks here. Roy Bittan's piano keeps to the shadows while the rhythm section maintains a soft shuffle, jacking it up for the potent choruses. The combination of Jimmy Iovine's understated production, Mark Knopfler's incredibly powerful singing and the strength of the story itself make "Romeo and Juliet" the greatest victory on a record not lacking in triumphs.
Two of Making Movies' other compositions are also boy-meets-girl numbers. "Hand in Hand" explores ground similar to "Romeo and Juliet" but can't begin to match the latter's force. In the randy and exhilarating "Expresso Love," however, Knopfler is so knocked out by the intensity of his relationship with his girlfriend (expressed in a cup-of-coffee metaphor!) that he can't wait to gulp her down again. "I don't want no sugar in it," he shouts. "Thank you very much/All wired up on it all fired up on it."
"Solid Rock" finds the singer in an affirmative, philosophical mood, ready to straighten out both his life and his music with a healthy dose of "solid rock." "Skateaway," a marvelous miniature, could serve as an anthem to roller skaters everywhere, while "Les Boys" — a strange and surprising anticlimax on an album this good — trots out Cabaret, apparently just for the hell of it.
Guitar freaks who genuflected over every riff on Dire Straits and Communiqué may be disappointed at what seems like a shortage of raveup Knopfler solos on Making Movies. There are a few (in "Tunnel of Love" and "Solid Rock"), but the beauty of the artist's current playing is that each note and phrase is woven into the fabric of the tales he tells. Unlike the other LPs, this one boasts songs, not solos.
More important, Making Movies is the record on which Mark Knopfler comes out from behind his influences and Dire Straits come out from behind Mark Knopfler. The combination of the star's lyrical script, his intense vocal performances and the band's cutting-edge rock & roll soundtrack is breathtaking — everything the first two albums should have been but weren't. If Making Movies really were a film, it might win a flock of Academy Awards.
