Rootsy folk-rock sextet Donna the Buffalo formed in 1987 in Ithaca, NY. The group's three vocalists -- Tara Nevins, who also plays fiddle, guitar, and accordion; guitarist Jeb Puryear; and keyboardist Joe Thrift -- add another layer of diversity to the group's eclectic and often socially conscious sound. Guitarist Jim Miller, drummer Tom Gilbert, and bassist Jed Greenberg complete the ensemble.

On their fifth and most accomplished album, Rockin' in the Weary Land, Donna the Buffalo present another batch of eclectic folk-rock with an upbeat groove and meaningful lyrics. The songs' topics range from preserving Florida's wetlands on "Seminole Wind" to "Mr. King," a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. Musically, Rockin' in the Weary Land includes country ("All the Time"), reggae ("It Will Be Right"), cajun ("Mr. King"), and zydeco ("Tides of Time"), and surrounds it all with Donna the Buffalo's signature danceable grooves. Singer/songwriters Jeb Puryear, Tara Nevins, and Joe Thrift all contribute fine vocals, lyrics and playing, and with the rest of the Buffalos alongside, they deliver a rollicking and thoughtful good time with Rockin' in the Weary Land. <AMG album pick>

Donna The Buffalo - Life's A Ride(2005)



Donna The Buffalo is one of America’s great “jam bands” and continue to hold the reputation as one of the best live bands on the bluegrass festival circuit today.
For the last twenty years or so, Donna the Buffalo has been playing some of the most sincere, heartfelt, and giddy music to come out of any genre. And that's not to say that they have a one particular genre of their own: quite the contrary - not even the most rigid categorist could pigeonhole this Trumansburg, N.Y. sextet. Joyfully, they make us dance to the sounds of rock-a-billy, zydeco, reggae, roots, bluegrass, blues, and countless others.

Guitarist Jim Miller, drummer Tom Gilbert, and bassist Jed Greenberg complete the ensemble. Donna the Buffalo started touring almost immediately after they formed, and they continue to do extensively. The group is a regular attraction at festivals like Merlefest and Telluride, and has also shared the stage with likeminded artists such as 10,000 Maniacs, Los Lobos, and Rusted Root.

Nearly concurrent with the start of their touring, Donna the Buffalo began releasing albums. Their debut, 1989's The White Tape, was recorded and released by the band itself; for their following album, The Red Tape, they enlisted their friend Mitch Easter to produce. Finding time to record when their busy touring schedule allowed, Donna the Buffalo released a self-titled album in 1993, following it with 1996's The Ones You Love, 1998's Rockin' in the Weary Land, and 2000's Positive Friction. The band released Live from the American Ballroom in 2002, followed by a string of records that included Wait Til Spring (with Jim Lauderdale), Life's a Ride, Red Tape, and Silverlined. Donna's album, "Life's a Ride", is a joyous continuation of what all of us Donna fans - old and new - have been enchanted by for years: shameless positivity, hypnotizing groove, and the uplifting of the human spirit. Try not to grin and abandon all pretense during "Way Back When" or "Blue Sky" - or the Zydeco of "Walk on Water". On the mellow side, "Rockin' Horse" is sure to be a new Jeb Puryear classic.

If you're new to Donna, you can't go wrong starting with any of their CD's (although I particularly recommend Live from the American Ballroom). They are all perfect examples of the love and joy that this band exists to fill us with.
