    "Happy, Happy HELLOWEEN, HELLOWEEN, HELLOWEEN
    Happy, Happy HELLOWEEN, Silver Shamrocks
    Happy, Happy HELLOWEEN, HELLOWEEN, HELLOWEEN
    Happy, Happy HELLOWEEN, Silver Shamrocks"

God I love that intro…I sing it to my 6 month old girl all the time…she totally digs it too!

How funny...retrospective genre reclassification…I'm pretty sure there was no Power Metal back in 1985. I believe all we had was Hard Rock, Thrash And Heavy Metal…ahh life was simple back then. I bring this up because I just left 2003 and hopped in-and-out of my '68 Cutlass and things look a little different. You see, the Cutlass is a time machine for me now and I think it is only fair that I take advantage of it in order to do this platter the justice it deserves. Yes, we had bands like JUDAS PRIEST and IRON MAIDEN, which by today's standards are Power Metal but back in the mid 80's those bands were Heavy Metal and HELLOWEEN was a little bit different. Different you say, how so? Well I think they must have been the pioneers of the happy, positive, upbeat sound that today so many bands emulate…truly a different path from the METAL GODS and that of THE BEAST. I know we tend to lump it all together these days but there really is a difference. This CD actually combines material from early 1985, late 1985 and 1986 but the sound is reasonably consistent throughout and the band intact throughout so I am reviewing it as one.

So production is lacking a little in general even for the era but it was debut material for this band so I can let it slide. I am a huge fan of Kai Hansen and I actually really like his vocals. He has that attitude and tone that makes him sound cool, even if he isn't the best of singers…sorta like James Hetfield I guess. Here, he is very young and not even at the level he is now with GAMMA RAY in terms of vocal prowess yet he is just what the material needs. I can't really imagine it another way. We all know he can shred too and shred he does. It is so cool to see the sound developing that he later moves forward in his new band. Michael Weikath ain't no slouch either. The leads are all over the place and are absolutely memorable, the way solos should be…many bands have lost that as a goal today, if they attempt to even solo (many can't…I know, I know).

I have always been a fan of HELLOWEEN's lyrics and lyrical ideas. I know they can be a bit clumsy and even corny at times but the tongue-in-cheek sense of humor is priceless. This is something they have had from their opening track "Starlight" and managed to keep for the most part through the years. That opener is a stomper and I believe an important part of the formula many Power Metal bands that follow copy. Both "Starlight" and "Murderer" showcase the signature rhythm guitar sound that becomes a WEENIE staple for years to come. It is with "Warrior" that I first recognize a sound that would become GAMMA RAY…such a "Land Of The Free" precursor, I can't believe it. The final verse in "Victim Of Fate" is absolutely killer…cool atmosphere, great guitar and excellent lyrics...reminiscent of IRON MAIDEN'S mellow section in "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner"…absolutely wicked! Then they kick into a pounding shred-fest to end it off…I can never get sick of it! Most of the tracks continue in the same vein…piles of classic tunes, HELLOWEEN rhythm guitar and solos that are second to none. In addition to the songs I have already mentioned, stand-out tunes for me include the fast-paced and heavier "Ride The Sky", the hilarious "Reptile" with it's great bass lines, the catchy, quick and solo-frenzied "Phantoms Of Death", the crunchy riffs and chorus chanting of "Gorgar" and the message of "Heavy Metal (Is The Law)". To be honest, pretty much all the tracks are memorable and great in their own way!

Not really much more to say…this is a fine CD that many bands still model their sound after. In my opinion, this CD only suffers from its age and production…in today's Metal world, it would be all the rage if it were just written and released. Not many bands have a rookie release of such high quality that has also influenced so many and evolved into a whole new Metal genre. It's no surprise to see the creators of this sound are alive and well and remain leaders in the field they started!

    One more time…teehee…

    Happy, Happy HELLOWEEN, Silver Shamrocks

Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys II (1988)

    Genre: Power Metal

    Format: FLAC

    Track List:
    1. Invitation

    7. Save Us
    8. March Of Time
    9. I Want Out
    10. Keeper Of The Seven Keys

    Review: Metal-Observer (10/10)

When younger Metal-bands are asked for their idols, then besides IRON MAIDEN or JUDAS PRIEST we often get the name of HELLOWEEN. They attained this status mainly because of their two "Keeper..."-albums, true milestones of the Metal-history.

On the second "Keeper"-album the German band continues down the path that they had chosen with the first part. And they came up with most probably the best HELLOWEEN-songs of all times. After the short, classically influenced intro the band is handing out the Speed-racket. With "Eagle Fly Free" they deliver us with a great catchy tune, excelling in its wonderful melody and super-catchy chorus. A real hit! The following "You Always Walk Alone" is rather planted in the mid-tempo and isn't as accessible as "Eagle...", but still this song grows with each rotation. On the funny "Rise And Fall" HELLOWEEN once more prove their sense of humour, not only because of the lyrics this song just spreads smiles on the listeners' faces. Just listen to the ending and you know what I mean. Cult! The following "Dr. Stein" hits in the same vein, especially the wonderful melody is what makes this song. The melodies all just plainly refuse to leave your brain again.

Guitar-wise the band is standing on the top. Kai Hansen and Michael Weikath manage to make the songs even more immortal with their great solos and the, in my opinion, still best HELLOWEEN-singer Michael Kiske excels on all songs and proves that he is no second to MAIDEN-shouter Bruce ~censored~. On the energetic and variably structured "We Got The Right" you could almost think that Mr.~censored~ himself sings the song, so Kiske comes damn near to him. With numbers seven and eight on the track-list two of the best-known HELLOWEEN-classics are thundering through the speakers, the immortal speed-cracker "March Of Time" and the culty "I Want Out" rinse your auditory passages and lead to non-stop headbanging and singing along. The title-track with its more than 13 minutes playing time closes off the "Keeper"-story, begun on the first part. This song is a monument, to say the truth, a masterpiece. Here HELLOWEEN undoubtedly delivered their creative pinnacle! The closing "Save Us" doesn't take any prisoners and makes up a good rearguard of a true masterpiece.

The second "Keeper"-part surpasses the first one by a full length, everything fits here, no wonder that this album is regarded as a classic. HELLOWEEN hasn't managed to pass these two albums again, despite many good albums, the presence of century-melodies and great choruses is just too mighty. If there is a small flaw to this album then that the guitars could have been provided with a little more punch production-wise, but with these brilliant songs, who am I to criticise them? Just like said before, a milestone of the Metal-history, which showed many young bands the way.

    Check-out-tips: all.

    Review: Metal-Observer (8/10)
This is the first record to feature Andi Deris and after two flops there was a lot on the line here. "Sole Survivor" just happens to be a hit. While it may not be a fast and furious track, it's powerful enough to stand on its own two legs and there is enough punch to keep things heavy and rocking. "Where The Rain Grows" provides plenty of classic double bass drumming, rich bass playing, great infectious guitar performing and vocals that are loud and hard hitting without ever coming off as obnoxious. Suits me just fine.

"Mr. Ego" is a mid paced number that has a cool beat and I think happened to be a single. I couldn't stop listening to this one as the simple, yet infectious bass lick kept me hooked in. Great track. Another single that became a classic was "Perfect Gentleman." Another song that keeps you hooked in from beginning to end without having to be heavy and aggressive. Great sing-a-long. It's ok to name your song "The Game Is On", but why on earth do you have to insert all those damn video game effects that come from Nintendo games? It a decent song, but that kills it. Sorry! In the end, I can't believe how many songs turned into singles from this as well as become fan favorites live or otherwise.

    Review: Metalcrypt (4.5/5)

This was Helloween's first really good album after the departure of old vocalist Michael Kiske and induction of new hard rock wailer Andi Deris, and what most people don't realize is that this album is pretty much better than anything they ever did with Kiske, too. This is a much more individualistic and strange album than anything they had done previously, and it stands proudly on its own two feet, not trying to be anything that it isn't and never stopping the colossal ass-kicking festival for even one second.

Helloween as a band have always possessed a huge, maniacal creative nuance that seemingly possessed them from the very beginning of their career not to ever create anything that sounded half-baked, uninspired or dull. Even when their ideas aren't so great, they still plod forward with conviction and strength enough to top a whole field of cows. They've always kept true to the Power Metal genre, too, even when at their most eccentric; pushing and pulling the boundaries of their home genre while never straying far enough from the path to alienate their fans or become stale or awkward. Better Than Raw is fortunately not a bad experiment at all, despite being by far the most esoteric and strange of the Deris-era material thus far.

This band can't really, truly be explained in words, though, they're just great songwriters, and you never know what you'll get next. "Push" is an okay opener, very heavy and almost Painkiller-esque, with Deris hitting high enough notes to shatter a window, but it never really clicks. "Falling Higher" is better, a typical Happy Helloweenish tune with a speedy tempo and a great chorus, but it's with the show-stopping "Hey Lord!" that the band really gets into their groove. It's a slower song, but not exactly a ballad either, boasting an impressive repertoire of heavenly choirs that will cheer up even the most misanthropic of wrist-cutting teenagers, and Helloween have never done anything like it, before or since. "Don't Spit on My Mind" is a bit weaker, although it is pretty fun when you're not paying full attention to it, with a cool groove going, but "Revelation" is the true gem here - an 8 minute epic with staccato Thrash riffing underneath an elegant melodic base and a catchy Helloween chorus, careening on for the entire duration and never getting dull. "Time!" sounds like Pink Floyd with a Helloween chorus layered on top, and it's also a great song, and "Handful of Pain" is a rock-solid midtempo rocker. "Lavdate Domnivm" is another gem, a midpaced, chimerical Latino-Power Metal anthem that works surprisingly well, and "Midnight Sun" is a solid closer, although less memorable than the songs preceding it.

Do you like good Power Metal? Yes? Then go get this one.

    Review: Metalcrypt (4.75/5)
Helloween had been on an uphill stride for a couple of albums before this, after having weathered several rough storms with lineup changes and such, and I have to agree with all the hype here: The Dark Ride is just about the best album Helloween ever put out. Yes, the Keepers albums are classics, and Walls of Jericho is a high quality burst of Speed Metal ferocity, but in my books, nothing they've ever done touches this one.

Let's talk about the band in general, first. Helloween is, without a doubt in my mind, one of the very best Power Metal bands active today, simply due to their boundless creative energy and masterful songwriting power, two things which the band utilizes in spades on The Dark Ride and the three albums before and after it. Few bands can manage both in one album, either using all of their creative energy without the strongest songwriting (Blind Guardian) or the other way around (Gamma Ray). Helloween, however, have been consistently challenging and innovative ever since the inception of fantastic vocalist Andi Deris, with every album sounding different from the one preceding it, and all with dynamic twists and turns around every corner. Yet, despite the rather spastic nature of the band's artistic development, they've never actually strayed from their Power Metal roots. Helloween really is a fantastic example of a band evolving within their own style, and while not everything they do is on-target, quite a bit of it is.

Now, now, don't leave just yet, for I haven't even begun to speak of The Dark Ride itself. This album gets touted as "dark" and "evil" quite a bit, but really, that is not entirely true. If you go into this expecting something as bleak and evil as Beherit, Celtic Frost or even Dark Angel, you will be terribly disappointed - while this album is not QUITE as happy-go-lucky as the band's previous outings, it is still not THAT dark and brooding, either, not like the band and several other reviewers have claimed. There are several songs here with darker, more mystical/creepy lyrics than usual for the band, as well as several with grinding, heavy rhythm sections and slower tempos, but they are all still catchy and rather accessible, boasting commendable sets of hooks and lots of big, anthemic choruses, and there are several that fit the mold of the classic Happy Helloween Power Metal speed cooker, too, serving to lighten the mood after a darker, grinding tune like "Escalation 666."

There are really no bad songs on this album, and only a few that aren't absolutely stellar. "Salvation" is definitely a shoo-in for best song here, a stunning Power Metal epic with blackened, frayed edges that give the song a remorseful, nostalgic feeling, as if it were the choir of a thousand oppressed peasants, crying out to the dark skies for a redemption. The title track is also amazing, with Andi Deris's most dynamic and emotional performance yet, and a superb performance from the guitar team - about half of this song is a galloping, triumphant Power Metal solo for the ages! The slower part in the middle is also beautiful, providing just the right amount of epic grandiosity to what was already a great song. "The Departed (Sun is Going Down)" is the third great track here, and it's quite unlike anything Helloween have done before or since, a slow, epic piece with resonating, echoing riffs playing off one another and a tremendous, anthemic chorus from Deris, along with the best lyrics on the album. The rest of the stuff here isn't quite as godly, but it is all high quality Power Metal in the way that only Helloween can do it.

As I stated before, this right here is Helloween's highest peak, and if you like Power Metal, you should love this album. For a rock-solid collection of great songs with addictive hooks, top-notch guitar work, and a stellar vocal performance from one of Power Metal's best, look no further than The Dark Ride.

    Review: Metalcrypt (3.5/5)
Helloween are back after three years without a studio album. "Rabbit Don't Come Easy", – like its funny title ŕ la "Pinks Bubbles Go Ape" suggests –, is more a return to the happy happy Halloween songs than their latest opus, "The Dark Ride", which sounds good to me at first glance. I was however afraid by the departure of two important skilled musicians of the pumpkin, Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch (respectively guitarist and drummer), but very pleased that the mighty Mikkey Dee (ex-King Diamond, Motörhead) was behind the drum kit.

The album kicks in with the very fast paced "Just A Little Sign", a very generic power metal song with a lame high voices chorus (remember the Chipmonks?) and a cheesy line written by Andy. I think he should keep "something growing in my pants" for his other band, Pink Cream 69! Next is another weak song, "Open Your Life", another speedy power metal cliché song. This tune could be on any Freedom Call album. Oddly, the new guitarist Sascha Gerstner came from that band. I made the Freedom Call reference before I even knew that Sascha wrote it with Andy! Track number three is once again another fast paced power metal song. This song is a bit better than the first two, with a very good classical verse but the chorus is once again a bit too common in Power Metal music.

Fortunately, the band changes the pace after this lame start. "Never Be A Star" is a very good heavy song with a solid, but a bit too repetitive chorus. "Liar" is a good very fast and heavy song ŕ la "Painkiller"-era Judas Priest with an excellent intricate guitar picking in the verse. "Sun 4 The World" is an excellent track which opens with a good oriental feel. Pure solid moderate fast Helloween just the way I like it. "Don't Stop Being Crazy" is the softest song on the album. Great track with an excellent chorus and melodies. However, the pre-chorus is a bit too similar to David Bowie's "Space Oddity", which they played on the "Metal Jukebox". The next tracks are "Do You Feel Good" and "Hell Was Made In Heaven", two typical great Helloween moderately fast numbers. The latter contains an excellent heavy riff just before the verses and excellent fast lead guitar solos and harmonies.

"Back Against The Wall" was probably a track laid off the "The Dark Ride" sessions, an heavier downtuned song with a dark vibe. Good song though. "Listen To The Flies" is another very good fast paced song with some sublime lead guitars. The more than eight minutes "Nothing To Say" finishes the regular CD weirdly with a rip off of Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog" with a small reggae pre-chorus and a "Stairway To Heaven" mood near the end! What a strange song! I don't hate it, it's a good one overall but a little too Zeppelinesque. Finally, the fast and acceptable bonus track "Far Away" finishes the CD.

The pace of the album is overall fast. The production by Charlie Bauerfeind is fine and extremely polished, a little bit too much I think (due possibly to the recording having been done in a fully digital studio). The cover and booklet are - as usual for a Helloween album - generous and admirable. Everyone in the band got involved on the songwriting of this CD. There are some very good lead guitar solos and harmonies on this album. Also, Mikkey Dee did a very good work behind the drums.

Overall, a good decent album from Helloween, but I expected a little more from them. The result is uneven with some very good and some average tracks. The first three tracks (especially the first two) weaken "Rabbit Don't Come Easy".

    Review: Metal-Observer(10/10)
OK by now you have all made up your minds regarding this album and its right to bear the Keeper name, but I still feel compelled to tell you why I think this is one monumental triumph for the Germans and indeed one of their finest moments. Yes, the two original Keeper albums are classics but the time is here and now and so I will only focus on this album and not make constant references to its predecessors.

I must admit that I’ve always liked Deris’s vocals more than Kiske’s (I know some of you will call this blasphemy!) and I feel that he has a much more characteristic style and sound than that of Kiske, who sounded just a tad too much like a ~censored~/Tate-clone. I also hold some of the post-Kiske albums like “Master Of The Rings” and “The Dark Ride” in high regard, so my expectations were very high for this album. They were exceeded by a country mile. You see, this album is the natural culmination of this band’s career – everything just clicks on here: the riffs, the soaring vocals, the instrumental interludes in the songs, the drums, the lyrics, the production etc. This is very much a perfect album! I am not kidding or exaggerating folks.

Kicking off with the epic “The King For A 1000 Years” we are immediately introduced to HELLOWEEN 2k5 – heaps of brilliantly intertwined melodic riffs, thundering drums, Deris singing very emotionally and tons of technicality. Yes, this is progressive Power Metal and it has a cerebral edge that is undeniable and much needed in this style of Metal. Next up is the equally brilliant “The Invisible Man” with Deris giving us some of his best vocals during the first bridge and an absolutely mesmerizing melodic break in the middle, all backed up by a very strong chorus. “Born On Judgement Day” follows in similar style but with a more bombastic chorus and speedy drumming, while the next track, “Pleasure Drone” does everything right with it’s memorable riffing and an epic-yet-melancholic chorus that will not leave your head in a very long time. Two lesser, but still great songs close off disc one: “Mrs. God” the first single and “Silent Rain”. The former is the sort of joke/novelty type song that this band has become known for and is very catchy. The latter is a rather typical hard rocking ‘ween number with heavy riffs, but it is the weakest song on disc one.

As if that wasn’t enough, we are treated to more HELLOWEEN mastery on the second disc. It opens with another epic number, “Occasion Avenue”, just like disc one. This song is another instant classic and it runs through multiple time- and riff changes, emotions and again features some brilliant vocals. Wow, this is progressive, forward-looking stuff, people! This sets the bar very high for any aspiring contenders to the crown! Next up is the obligatory ballad, “Light The Universe”, featuring Candice Night (of BLACKMORE’S NIGHT) on guest vocals. It is a laid back song with a sad feeling, but thankfully it comes off as neither saccharine nor contrived. The next few tracks are some of the heavier, more rocking tracks on the album – “Do You Know What You’re Fighting For?” is a great song with some very atypical riffing (sounds almost like something off a AUDIOSLAVE album!!) during the pre-choruses, but still manages to impress with a strong chorus. “Come Alive” is, sadly, a weaker track. It’s good but is devoid of that HELLOWEEN feeling and energy. “Shade In The Shadow” is a brilliant song with some of the most memorable guitar licks all over the place and an equally rousing chorus. That’s how to do it boys! “Get It Up” is a track similar to “I Can” (off Better Than Raw) with a motivating, happy feeling. The masterful “My Life For One More Day” ends off this outstanding album with some classic ‘ween riffs and a chorus that just yells out to be screamed at live concerts. Excellent way to end off such this monster of and album!

There really is nothing to criticize on here, with even the weaker tracks being among the best this band has penned in recent years. Charlie Baurefeind has ensured that this has the best sound of any HELLOWEEN album, with a perfect balance between the instruments and vocals. Hats off to him! Both musically and thematically this album is a triumph. They play with a level of energy and conviction that I’ve never heard from them before and the prevailing progressiveness and intricacy of these songs bear testimony to their musical chops. Weikath and relative newcomer Gerstner form a deadly riff section, while Grosskopf’s bass has finally been given more space to breathe. Deris gives his career-defining performance on here, while newbie skin basher Dani Löble is by far the most proficient drummer this band has ever had. Like I said, there’s nothing to fault on here. Even the cover art kicks ass – seeing that hooded wizard grace the cover again was great!

I understand that fans will have divergent opinions on this album because of the absence of Kiske and Hansen and because some of these new songs aren’t just typical (simplistic) Power Metal fare, but the ones bashing this album are the ones losing out. I usually don’t care about other opinions and I respect their right to have them, but in this case all I have to say is this: ~censored~ the critics! This is musical perfection from one of the most influential Metal bands around and this new album deserves to be heard! This album is able to stand on its own against any of this band’s previous output and is so strong that the fact that it it’s a sequel becomes irrelevant. It’s that simple.

    All hail the pumpkins!!!!!!!

    Review: Metalcrypt (4.5/5)

While for many Helloween continue to be the musical equivalent of a sight gag, the legendary German metal crew maintains their credibility as one of the top bands in the field with a constant, steady output of quality albums. Their twelfth studio excursion sees the revered genre-inventers paying homage to a series of past releases while sparking that original flame of German eccentricity that garners their successful progression. Without being a further sequel to 2005's third "Keepers..." opus, "Gambling with the Devil" is more in the same ball park as "Better Than Raw", with a number of the tracks having a similar feel - namely pulsating opener "Kill It" to the respective icebreaker "Push" - but there is a fair amount of old school pumpkin smashing with the bouncy "Final Fortune" and the sprawling "Heaven Tells No Lies". Symptomatic of the Deris-era material, "Gambling with the Devil" has a few odd twists and turns, keeping the listener engaged throughout. Mr. Deris himself is in fine form, though his vocals aren't quite as startling, or indeed as daring as they were on their last album, but his soaring, idiosyncratic whine is as streamlined as ever. The production is sturdy too, giving drummer Dani Löble a sonic boom in which to demonstrate his monster talents.

Things are a little heavier in places, a little softer in others, but as usual Helloween give us a lot to digest, making this excursion quite varied, but like many pumpkin-heads, I think their last release was the highlight of their post-Kiske career, and keeping that in mind, this is probably as close as they're going to get in the immediate future. I've been a Helloween fan for a lot of years, and I can honestly say I've never seen them in better shape. Since the recruitment of ex-Freedom Call axe-slinger Sascha Gerstner, things have become a lot tighter in the rhythm section and the songs themselves are wide-ranging and speckled with modern inflections, yet reach farther back into their past than any of the early 90s material. The lyrics seem to have taken a slump this time -most are reduced to rambling garble that doesn't even qualify as GCSE English - but the catchy melodies and gripping vocals make up for this lapse in effort.

With monstrous tracks like the infectious "Can Do It", the blasting, double-bass fuelled "Paint a New World" and the "Where the Rain Grows"-esque "Dreambound", "Gambling with the Devil" is a fine addition to the Helloween cannon that probably won't pick up any new listeners, but will please the Power Metal garrison immensely. Top marks would be awarded however, if Biff Byford didn't make an unsavory appearance...
