Kaki's techniques, although not necessarily groundbreaking, are very virtuosic and disciplined,
to say the least. Give her a break... she's 23, and she self-produced her first album.
If you enjoy Michael Hedges, Alex DeGrassi, Preston Reed, Billy McLaughlin, Pierre Bensusan,
and any other acoustic guitar virtuoso that fits this bill, download.
Finally a woman (a very young woman)
has entered this male-dominated genre with presence, confidence and grace.

Acoustic-guitar virtuoso Kaki King's sophomore effort improves on the dynamic instrumental compositions
of her debut to include a wider range of textures, moods, and ever-evolving structures.
King is also backed by a cadre of supremely sensitive musicians on LEGS TO MAKE US LONGER,
and the cello, violin, upright bass, and drums add rich, complex color to King's
already-sophisticated playing. Except for an electric guitar on the eerily quiet "Can the Gwot Save Us?"
and King's under-the-radar singing on "My Insect Life," the spotlight
is on the guitarist's stunning technique, which, even through its rapid-fire bass lines
and ringing harmonics, never sounds flashy or forced.

Based on the meditative, space-filled opener, "Frame," listeners might associate King's work
with the moody, avant-garde ambient jazz often found on the ECM label.
The comparison is an apt one--King spins atmospheric landscapes from her fretboard,
whether via nimble finger-picking (the spiraling melodies on "Doing the Wrong Thing")
or the mathematical, push-pull patterns of "Solipsist." Regardless of her associations,
King is a distinctive, accomplished musician. Her instrumental prowess is almost easy to overlook,
in fact, because it is employed so artfully in the service of her hypnotic, nuanced, and lovely music.

For her third studio outing, UNTIL WE FELT RED, singer-guitarist Kaki King returned
to Velour Records after a brief stint on Epic. Clearly the indie-label setting suits
this adventurous performer well, as the inventive songs on the album indicate,
with King enhancing her delicate voice and lauded six-string acoustic playing with
spacious arrangements created, in part, by producer/kindred spirit John McEntire (Tortoise).
Highlights of UNTIL WE FELT RED include the light, lilting "Yellowcake" and the gradually unfolding,
utterly mesmerizing "You Don't Have to Be Afraid." While King's aesthetic seemed
slightly unformed on past outings, this record places her squarely in the esteemed company
of eccentric folk-leaning artists such as Joanna Newsom and Hanne Hukkelberg,
where she seems quite comfortable.

Kaki King went from obscure guitar-slinger to critics' darling during the course of 2007,
and raised her profile further with some guest appearances on other people's albums
and a number of well-attended shows. This 2008 release capitalizes her newfound fame,
but does nothing to tamper with the melodic and technical acumen that got her there in the first place.
This fourth album has a slightly more intimate feel, focusing on intricate finger-picking
and honest lyrics that explore the emotionally raw state after a break-up.

Taking a new direction from her previous work, King has worked closely with trusted musicians
to create an album of ecclectic variety from punk to dance-rock providing inspiration.
Occasional interludes are provided by purely instrumental tracks while the rest of the album
features heartfelt vocals and originality.

New album "Junior" sees her joined by drummer Jordan Perison and multi-instrumentalist Dan Brantigan.
Her career spans more than the past ten years with critical acclaim and fan admiration aplenty.

The first thing you notice about King's latest album is the variety, with everything from upbeat dance
to soothing instrumentals perfectly balanced throughout. With an ambient vocal style that isn't always perfect
she reminds me of the mid-nineties indie scene, most notably Sleeper and Catatonia, whose female vocalist
would front their performances with a unique sound to divide them from the other bands around.
The lo-fi recording style often lends an air of delicacy, even to the heavier and more upbeat
tracks on the album, which won't be to everyone's taste, but it would be an injustice to not mention
the talent and creativity that shines through every track.
Kaki King isn't the kind of artist you put on in the background, or someone you would watch live
to bounce around to, and Junior is an album that demands your full attention
while rewarding you with fantastic alternative rock.
Stand out moments include Spit It Back In My Mouth and Communist Friends.
