L7 was an American rock band from Los Angeles that was active from 1985 to 2000. Due to their sound and image, they are often associated with the grunge movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

L7 is their eponymous debut album. Recorded in 1987 and released in 1988, the album demonstrates the band's punk rock origins, although there are traces of the heavier grunge sound that would dominate their later work.

Smell the Magic is their second album. It was initially released in September 1990 as a 12" EP containing only the first six songs. It was reissued on CD in July 1991, expanded to album length with three more tracks: "Packin' a Rod", "Just Like Me", and "American Society". The opening song, "Shove", was released as the band's first single.

Bricks Are Heavy is their third album, released in April 1992 through Slash Records. Backed by the single "Pretend We're Dead", the album became a breakthrough hit and the band became the "poster girls" of grunge music.

The album was released shortly after grunge had broken into the mainstream with the surprise success of Nirvana's Nevermind. In July 1992, the song "Pretend We're Dead" gained popularity among American rock radio stations, where it received regular airplay. By late August, the album had reached #1 on Billboard's Heatseekers album chart, and two weeks later it peaked at #160 on the Billboard 200.

Musically the album is heavier and dirtier than the band's previous recordings. While the band retained its punk and hardcore punk roots, there was more emphasis on heavy metal than before. It was produced by Butch Vig, who is renowned for his work with bands such as Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, and later Garbage.

Hungry for Stink is the fourth album. It was released in July 1994 during their Lollapalooza tour. Musically the album is heavier than the band's previous work, marking the culmination of their progression from a largely punk to metal sound. Lyrically the songs concern "darker" themes; for example stalking on "Can I Run", and depression and insanity on "Questioning My Sanity". The song "Andres" was released as a single in 1994. The song "Fuel My Fire" was also covered by electronic band The Prodigy on their The Fat of the Land album.

The Beauty Process is the fifth album. Recorded in late 1996 and released in February 1997, the album was favored by critics yet dismissed by many earlier fans of the band.

Bassist Jennifer Finch left the band during the recording, and was briefly replaced by Greta Brinkman. (Gail Greenwood, formerly of Belly would join after Brinkman's departure). Bass on the album was performed by Brinkman and the band's frontwoman Donita Sparks.

The songs "Drama" and "Off the Wagon" were released as singles. The UK CD release of the album has a hidden 13th track, "Guera".

Rolling Stone magazine said in its review of the album, "...L7 pack more fresh stylistic variations on classic punk into 40 minutes than most bands come up with during a career."
