Twenty years on and this album is still amongst the best that MANOWAR have recorded. Just listen to the opening riff of "Metal Daze", then the vocals and the bass and drums dropping in. Played at full volume this is Heavy Metal heaven. Unbelievably catchy and hook laden much like each and every MANOWAR track recorded since.

If you don't like them then your not a Metal fan as they encompass all that is glorious, ironic, clichéd and worthwhile in Metal music. Name another Metal band that has done more to support Metal across the globe? They look stupid? Well didn't Lars and Co look like a bunch of winky puller in their nail varnish "Load" era; what the ~censored~ are SLIPKNOT all about and Nu-Metal in general? I suppose the looks are all relevant but I will tell you there are few bands in any genre that stand out as MANOWAR do and even less that truly believe in what they are doing.

Uniqueness and individuality that's what MANOWAR stand for. So if you wanna be different then be a MANOWAR fan. You will be in good company.

Or look at it this way: If you don't find "Shell Shock", "Manowar", the Orson Welles narrated epic "Dark Avenger" and the awesome title track, "Battle Hymns" inspirational and up lifting then just why are you a Metal fan? Have a think about it and then listen to this album. Then email me your thoughts.

    I will be waiting.

Manowar - Into Glory Ride (1983)

    Genre: Heavy Metal
    Length: 45:30
    Size: 291MB (298MB w/ extras)
    Format: FLAC

    Track List:
    1. Warlord
    2. Secret Of Steel
    3. Gloves Of Metal
    4. Gates Of Valhalla
    5. Hatred
    6. Revelation (Death’s Angel)
    7. March For Revenge (By The Soldiers Of Death)

    Review: Metal-Observer (9/10)
“Into Glory Ride“, which was released in 1983, is in fact a rather untypical MANOWAR album. The songs are relatively long, the lyrics relatively (attention: relatively) untrashy and on a few songs you can even hear keyboards. Is that still “true”? A look at the back of the booklet is enough to answer this question: “We fight to the death. To the last man. To the last breath. Death To False Metal.”. So it’s not that, back then, MANOWAR were a whole different band than today, except for guitarist Karl Logan all of today’s members were also aboard already, with Ross The Boss handling the guitars here. Furthermore the two founding members Eric Adams (vocals) and Joey DeMaio (bass) as well as drummer Scott Columbus were taking part.

The CD starts with the killer track “Warlord“ which stands out stylistically from the other songs due to its length of a bit more than four minutes and its high speed, but which is perfectly suitable as an opener. Here it’s already striking that Eric Adam’s voice was slightly more high-pitch back then than today, though the quality of his vocals was already fantastic at that time. The following songs have all been kept rather epic and mid-tempo. In particular you would have to set off “Gloves Of Metal” here, the album’s hit, to which a video was shot which is simply cult and reminiscent of the “Conan” movies. Anyway, the song instantly gets hooked in your ear and during the second listen at the latest you will also scream along “Hands high / Forever we’ll be there / Gloves of Metal rule tonight, Yea!!!”. The more than 8-minute epic “March For Revenge (By The Soldiers Of Death” is another outstanding tune where especially singer Eric Adams presents all his skills and makes the track a real masterpiece.

The only track off the album which doesn’t really appeal to me personally is “Hatred”, as it has turned out a bit too long and monotonous in my opinion. But the six remaining tracks, which have all become true pounding and majestic Metal anthems, make up for that. Besides, in the booklet of the re-release’s digi pack you will find some comments by MANOWAR members and other musicians who have been influenced by MANOWAR, such as Oscar Dronjak (HAMMERFALL), for example.

So fans of the band should absolutely get this, but Metalheads to whom the band usually is too clichéd and pathetic might also enjoy “Into Glory Ride” due to the songs’ epic and the, like I said, relatively “normal” lyrics. It’s not the best MANOWAR album, but definitely a good preparation for “Hail To England” (also 1983) as well as for the milestone “Sign Of The Hammer” that was to follow one year later.

Manowar - Hail To England (1984)

    Genre: Heavy Metal
    Length: 33:26
    Size: 209MB (217MB w/ extras)
    Format: FLAC

    Track List:
    1. Blood Of My Enemies
    2. Each Dawn I Die
    3. Kill With Power
    4. Hail To England
    5. Army Of The Immortals
    6. Black Arrows
    7. Bridge Of Death

    Review: Metal-Observer (9.5/10)
With "Hail To England" MANOWAR delivered their third and maybe best album in 1984. The album has only seven songs, but each and every one of them is a killer.

All is kicked off with the hymn "Blood Of My Enemies", a mighty mid-tempo-track. The song mainly lives off Eric Adams' powerful vocals and the sing-along-chorus. With "Each Dawn I Die" and the fast "Kill With Power" we have two real crackers, especially the latter one is a real shred-fest. Catchy chorus, brilliant vocals and a superb guitar-solo are what make this song stand out. Generally you have to point out the excellent guitar-work by Ross the Boss. Today MANOWAR don't have such a talented guitarist in their ranks anymore, a pity. As next we have the title-track "Hail To England" coming through the already bleeding speakers. Another gripping hymn, which convinces through its simple chorus and nice melody.

Number five off the tracklist is "Army Of The Immortals". This song is dedicated to the MANOWAR-fans and still is a regular at almost each live-gig. What follows next, well, you either love it or hate it. "Black Arrows", a bass-solo by bassist and band-leader Joey DeMaio. You can hate DeMaio and his cliché-ridden speeches, but he is a true master of his instrument.

The last song of the album then is nothing but a true highlight. I am talking about "Bridge Of Death", which is absolute cult today. Here the band most probably pulls off its greatest achievement. For a long time this song had disappeared from their live-set, but today they have revived it. Maybe they have realised the potential of this song.v In my ears "Hail To England" is the best and most varied album by MANOWAR ever. The band celebrates finest Power Metal. If you don't take the clichéd lyrics into consideration (which the band already is (in)famous for) this is an all-time classic. Musically there is nothing to be criticised, the guys really master their instruments and if need be play your head off your neck.

Each song has huge hit-character and that is what counts. The sound also is alright, if you see that the album had been recorded in 1984. The only negative points are the few songs and the rather short playing time.

So everybody, who hasn't heard the band before should try out this one first, because it's their best!

Check-out-tips: "Kill With Power", "Bridge Of Death"

    Review: Metal-Observer (10/10)
MANOWAR are easy to take the piss out of. Aren't they? It has been written numerous times before and will be written time and time again just what a bunch of winky puller these guys are. Their image is a constant source of amusement. Their lyrics are prejudiced. Basically just outdated. They don't look anymore stupid than the likes of KORN or LIMP BIZKIT or the Death/Black Metallers in their corpse paint, but most reviewers would rather comment on the MANOWAR-image rather that the quality of music on offer.

And that is what's wrong with MANOWAR - their output is amongst the finest that has graced the Metal-genre. Opening track, "All Men Play On 10", is a killer. An ode to their newly found record-label, 10 Records, Eric Adams belts out the opening line "I made a rock n roll sin when I tried giving in." and you better believe that MANOWAR aren't gonna do that.

Simple this is top class Metal. "Animals", "Thor (The Powerhead)" and the awesome "Mountains" only keep up the quality constant. Joey DeMaio's bass work is already legendary as is Eric Adams' vocal prowess, equally as good as MAIDEN's Bruce. The guitar work of the much-missed Ross the Boss added uniqueness to the MANOWAR-sound and Scott Columbus's pounding skin work is on par with John Bonham's.

But wait that's only the first half over! The title track just blows the speakers! As does "The Oath", then up steps Joey to deliver his traditional bass solo, "Thunderpick", and very expertly done to boot. However it is the album-closer than attracts the most attention. "Guyana (Cult Of The Damned)". A sweeping 7-minute epic, which MANOWAR excels at. Heaviness, catchy, inspirational, just showcasing what these guys are capable of doing.

~censored~ the critics. Listen to MANOWAR. And make up your own mind!

    Review: Metal-Observer (10/10)
As I dug through my CD-collection again, my eyes fell onto "Fighting The World", the 1987-opus of our fur-pants-wearing friends from the US of A. Nice, haven't listened to that one in a while, so into my rucksack and off to work. You know, at work I can play music as much and as loud as I want to and that's just what MANWAR is best at, so into the CD-player, crank it up and...

Yes, I really asked myself, why I had not listened to this CD in such a long time. This is Metal as it should be. As cliché-ridden and ridiculous as those four guys sometimes are, this album is first crop. Energetic, great riffs, the incarnation of a vocal-god in Eric Adams and of course a whole bunch of the best Metal-songs that ever have seen the light of this planet. With "Carry On", "Defender" and "Black Wind, Fire And Steel" there are three immortal classics on this album, which, to quote MANWAR, truly deserve their place in the Olymp of Metal. Brothers, this Metal that has been forged with sweat and heart-blood really blows you out of your fur-boots. Stomping rhythms, screeching guitars, the divine vocals of Eric Adams, if you're into Metal, you just have to love it.

More than once I caught myself singing along loudly (of course at "Defender", where else and after the umpteenth rotation the lyrics also are OK, something different just won't fit the music. Sure, the playing time for not even 35 minutes for nine songs is rather skimpy, but hey, then you can listen to this CD twice, eh? The sound also, for the fact that this opus is entering its 14th year now, is absolutely OK. The bass is thundering, guitars drill them into your mind and what little is left of it will be destroyed by the crystal-clear voice of Eric Adams.

So, brothers, put this CD into your player, get a tankard of beer, lean back and just let these gods of Metal made flesh run you over. And to end in style with the words of somebody, who has to know: "We are unworthy, we are dust, we are ashes!"

Manowar - Kings Of Metal (1988)

    10. Blood Of The Kings

    Review: Metal-Observer (9/10)
Brothers of steel, today I will tell you about four warriors, who had been enslaved by their record company in 1988 to ban their sonic creations onto one of those old-fashioned vinyl-discs with the title "Kings Of Metal". Guided by a divine vision I had to get just that record to get a new hair-style by it.

And I received it by the first song, "Wheels Of Fire", IMHO the fastest song they've ever done. Had I thought that they wouldn't be able to top off their previous album "Fighting The World", they proved by wrong here. Why they were able to do that was nicely explained in the second song, ("Other bands play, Manowar kill"). So stop thinking, shut your mouth, fasten the seat-belts and just listen. Some other members of the "true" guild of Metal might have songs that sound like every other, but MANOWAR made a statement of diversity on this album. From speedy over stomping mid-tempo up to a sappy ballad you will be able to find it all here.

But let's take a closer look at this bunch of melodies: Opening it all up, we have the already mentioned "Wheels Of Fire", which is founded on the gentlemen's knack for motor-cycles. After that they are using their usual modesty to describe themselves ("Kings Of Metal"), before offering us THE ballad in "Heart Of Steel", proving to us that they also master the calm moments. To praise the godlike vocals of Eric Adams would mean to carry some night-birds into a well-known Greek city and I don't want to repeat myself...

The (almost certainly produced by False-Metalians rumour that the four warriors from the land of Her Majesty Queen E2 (Ehm, Manu, I didn't know that she is reigning the USA again... The guys are Americans! - Alex) would not be masters of their instruments is put to rest once and for all with the following piece, the furious instrumental "Sting Of The Bumblebee". The bass-lines of Master DiMaio most probably has made a lot of bassists retire.

At "The Crown And The Ring" it's getting balladesque again, this time a whole choir had to provide the backing support. With "Kingdom Come" they returned to the already known waters of the stomping mid-tempo before the only real let-down of the CD occurred, the bonus-track "Pleasure Slave". Here Mr Adams tells the female part of the population, where it is ought to be socially. If that were underlaid with the right quality of music, who cares, zip another beer and on with it, but this track just won't end, no spirit, no ideas, I could have gone without this bonus. But all is well again with my personal favourite "Hail And Kill". After a calm intro follows an up-tempo-cracker of highest quality. That man really can sing. "The Warriors Prayer" could be the entry as "an intro as it should be". Here a grandfather tells his grandson a grand bedtime-story, with many sound-effects, of the four warriors of Metal, turning into "Blood Of The Kings", a Metal-track of middle pace, being a worthy end to an excellently recorded opus.

Musically beyond any doubts, the four warriors of the only and true Metal celebrate their only and true Metal. Besides the predecessor "Fighting The World" a must-have for every well-equipped record-collection. That some people continue to criticise the cliché-laden lyrics about sex, Metal and booze and the life-style of the defenders of good taste (sex, Metal and booze) is beyond me, I still see it as a real satire. And it also is the source for a great game (free from RockHard-magazine): The MANOWAR-drink-and-sing-game. Take a few Metal-maniacs and a lot of beer. Put in a MANOWAR-record of your choice. As soon as the words "true", "blood", "kill", "enemy", "warrior" or "steel" are mentioned, everybody has to down one beer ex. The winner is, who still finds his bed afterwards (or something like that).

In that sense: Cheers! (9 points = one point-deduction for "Pleasure Slave")

    Review: Metal-Observer (7.5/10)
The Kings of Metal's first release of the 1990's wasn't the album the fans expected. Starting off with an epic 28-minute "Achilles, Agony And Ecstasy In Eight Parts" this rather weighty epic has its moments, but for all it promised it didn't really deliver. Sure Eric Adams' vocals on "Hector's Final Hour" and the stellar axe work by new boy Dave Shankle on "The Funeral March" raises the attention for a few minutes as does the frenetic "Death Hector's Reward", but the other new boy Rhino's over long and simply infuriating drum solo on "Armor Of The Gods" followed shortly after with DeMaio's excruciatingly painful bass solo just gets you wondering why? We know they can play so cut out the self-indulgent ~lol~, but that's MANOWAR for you!

So for me the album really kicks of with a nice quiet ballad under the name of "Metal Warriors" - quiet my arse!! This is Heavy ~censored~ Metal MANO-~censored~-WAR-style. This is the song that puts the hands in the air and gets you remembering why you like MANOWAR in the first place. "If you are not into Metal then you are not my friend", need I write more? Glorious stuff.

"Ride The Dragon" just pulls the teeth out. A furious Power Metal-tirade. Yet another MANOWAR-classic. But "Spirit Horse Of The Cherokee" slows things down a bit with its over long intro, but when things get started it rocks. MANOWAR could always write a great chorus. "Burning" follows much the same line. A bit lack luster in deployment it seems that MANOWAR have run out of ideas: repeating themselves over and over. However service is resumed with the titanic "Power Of Thy Sword" - surely contender for MANOWAR's best song-title!! Again crashing in at over 7 minutes this is a true epic. Pounding bass and drums, solid guitar riffing and just listen to the ballad-esque middle section. Adams's voice is perfection. But not content with pulverizing you with one epic up pops "The Demon's Whip" to wipe the floor with you. You want a heavy dose of Power Thrash, then this is the one for you. After all that Metal-madness the Kings of Metal drop to a canter and give us the majestic "Master Of The Wind" (stop ~censored~ at the title!)

So not the best MANOWAR-album, but enough for those wanting to check out what all the fuss is about and unfortunately (?) you don't get a picture of the band on the inner sleeve. Shame that!!

    Review: Metal-Observer (10/10)
It seems like an age since the Kings Of Metal last offered us a studio outing. In fact you'll have to go back to 1996 to find it and looking back all those years it is obvious that the Metal Kings haven't given up their crown just yet!

"Louder Than Hell" just kicks major Metal-ass! Every song is a triumph for Metal-music from the out and out speed metal fury of "The Power" to the glorious nine-minute plus "Today Is A Good Day To Die", MANOWAR run through every Metal-trick in the book. You want anthems will check out "Number 1" and the awesome "King". You want a melodic ballad, then "Courage" fits the bill rather nicely. You want power house riffing with driving bass and thundering drums the first three tracks are gonna deliver a triple dose of powerful Metal straight into the old grey matter. Adams is in fine voice and shows just why he is the only man that can front this band. DeMaio is a touch quieter on this album than in past releases, but it is his trademark bass galloping that drives the group along. The mighty Scott Columbus sits proudly behind the drums of doom and Karl Logan's guitar playing is skillful and riff perfect.

Yes, MANOWAR are firmly stuck in their own world. Yes, they play music that is derided in the fashion-conscious UK and USA, but still there is a passion and emotion and an honesty that generates through every song that MANOWAR play. Steadfastly refusing to accept the word of those that stand against them. All the MANOWAR-detractors must be eating a huge chunk of humble pie these days as the band head into their third decade still proclaiming Death To False Metal!

    Review: Metalcrypt (3.5/5)

Manowar's reputation for cheesy lyrics precedes them, so I won't even bother to mention that anywhere else in this review. This album screams "epic" right from the start and most of the songs carry that feeling. The major downside is a blatant abuse of ballads and the song ordering which makes this abuse even more damageable. After the opener "Call to Arms", you have to wait until the 8th track (the title track) for another rocker. For a metal album, this is almost a crime. Some of the songs almost sound like bedtime songs that you sing to children, with a bit of a fantasy sound to them. Others would be good on soundtracks of epic movies - most notably "Nessun Dorma", a very opera-like song which could almost be on the Titanic soundtrack, but would definitely sound good at the end of some epic movie (just listen to the end of the song and you'll be reminded of the songs played at the end of some old movies.) "An American Trilogy" with its glory-alleluia stuff reminds me of Stryper's "Battle Hymn of the Republic" (off "Soldiers Under Command" - note that Manowar's song is much better.)

After an overdose of very soft songs and waking up to "Warriors of the World", the last three songs treat you to some good mix of heavy and speed metal, very fast and aggressive in-your-face stuff. Until these, Eric Adams was singing in a very clean and melodic fashion, while here he shows a lot of aggressivity while still retaining some melody. I must point out that Eric's performance is the highlight of the album, his performance is almost flawless, and I can say without the shadow of a doubt that he is one of the best vocalist in metal. He has excellent control of his voice and shows a lot of flexibility, always delivering the goods.

Musically this is a very good album, it just happens to be too soft for some two-thirds, and the song ordering augments that deficiency by a factor of ten. The soft stuff is played very well (and, again, the vocal performance is excellent), but I expect a metal album to rock... In this case you have to wait until the end before this starts rocking for more than one song in a row... An OK album, but if you're new to Manowar I suggest going for the 80's stuff first. It's the same type of music (they've barely changed in 20 years), but it will rock your world a lot more.

    Review: Metal-Observer (7/10)
There is simply no other Heavy Metal band near MANOWAR in terms macho bravado posturing and outrageousness. They are they very true essence of classic Heavy Metal. Tales of battle, the clash of steel against steel, bodies torn asunder, glory and honour, death and majesty all evoke the over the top escapist nature of the music.

Ever since 1982 and the bands inaugural offering the mighty ‘’Battle Hymns’’ the world (and this includes a large chunk of the Metal-world) has laughed and snorted at the homo-eroticism, the less than accomplished lyrics and of course the loin cloth and muscle image. However now quarter of a century into a career that many thought would have died like so many bands before them sees MANOWAR release their tenth album at a stage when they have never seemed as popular.

‘’Gods Of War’’ is a concept album about, who else: Odin. Indeed you may argue that all MANOWAR albums are concept albums as they all deal with the rudiments of battle but ‘’Gods Of War’’ raises the bar to an altogether new level in servitude to True Heavy Metal and all that envelopes it. For all the simplistic riff-verse-chorus Metal that MANOWAR has developed over the years ‘’Gods Of War’’ is nothing short of epic. It’s epic in length, construction, production and development and never before has MANOWAR attempted anything remotely like it.

DeMaio obviously hasn’t deemed it worthwhile to drop the blundering fillers that first saw light of day on ‘’Warriors Of The World’’. Of course a concept album requires some license, respite to tell the tale but a six minute keyboard opening followed by another two minute plus keyboard indulgence does slightly lend itself to much groaning and impatience. Unfortunately the album is littered with such interludes and lyrically just how many times can a band sing about Odin and crossing the rainbow bridge before restlessness sets in?

Still when MANOWAR spark up the cannon an almighty volley of True Metal is unleashed. From the teeth rattling riffing of ‘’King Of Kings", the brisk up-tempo drive of ‘’Sleipnir’’ the glorious hoof-pounding thunder of ‘’Loki God Of Fire’’ to the emphatic chorus driven magnificence of ‘’Sons Of Odin’’ and ‘’Gods Of War’’ MANOWAR is once again holding the reins of all conquering Heavy Metal.

Musically the one note riffing so favoured on the last two releases is pinned backed in favour of some, but not a striking amount, of diversity from guitarist Karl Logan. Drummer Scott Columbus doesn’t much get above the four-four steady beat but he is still a power house of the back line. Vocalist Eric Adams continues to impress with a voice that goes from strength to strength and is MANOWAR’s most potent weapon. Just hearing his imposing vocal delivery on ‘’Blood Brothers ‘’or ‘’Hymn Of The Immortal Warrior’’ demonstrates that he has lost none of the power and prowess that has made him one of Metal’s finest singers. As for DeMaio the true heart of MANOWAR his signatory bass lines have faded in favour of being in total control be it as musician, producer, and manager or Heavy Metal tour de force.

For the most part ‘’Gods Of War’’ does everything you’d expect a MANOWAR album to do but like stable mates RHAPSODY OF FIRE (any guesses who is close to them?) it does suffer from profligacy and musical waste. MP3 users will have already sheered this album down to eight tracks of bombastic Metal. Cut away much of the morass add in a bit more Metal might and MANOWAR will have recorded an album fit for a band of their stature and perhaps their best in twenty years.
