After laboring in Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Neil Young finally hit perfect pitch--if his endearing off-center whine can be called "perfect"--with his third album. He's equally passionate with trippy riddles (has anybody figured out what "We've got mother nature on the run" means in the title track?) and pointed protest (after 30 years of rock-radio overplay, "Southern Man" still rings with truth about redneck racism). His creaky ensemble, including pianist Jack Nitzsche and rotating members of Crazy Horse, transforms ramshackle country and folk songs into soulful hippie hymns.

Neil Young - Dorothy Chandler Pavilion - 02-01-1971 - Solo FLAC



I'm Happy That Y'all Came Down (also released as Young Man's Fancy) was drawn from an audience tape made at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles on the last night of Neil Young's early-1971 solo tour. Young was at a pivotal point in his career, having released his commercial breakthrough After the Gold Rush five months earlier; his 15-song set included acoustic versions of such familiar songs as "I Am a Child," "Cowgirl in the Sand," "Ohio," and "Don't Let It Bring You Down." But he was already looking forward, having written a clutch of introspective, confessional songs, most of which would appear on his next album, Harvest, and they made up more than half of the set list; "Journey Through the Past" and "Love in Mind" wouldn't turn up on record until the release of Time Fades Away more than two and a half years later, and "See the Sky About to Rain" wouldn't be released until On the Beach in July 1974. Beyond the remarkable set list, Young, performing alone, had a warm interaction with the highly appreciative audience, explaining the selections in an intimate, funny manner. Neil Young - Times Square (1989 unreleased LP) with The Restless FLAC



This album was pulled by Neil at the last minute, after radio stations had begun to receive their copies of the album. The material, save for "Box Car", a This Note's For You era song, ended up on both the Eldorado EP and the Freedom album.

Tracks 1-9 are from the unreleased LP Times Square. Tracks 10-12 are from the live-performance on the Saturday Night Live-show on September 30 in 1989. Track 13 is from the rehearsals to the same show.

Old Man's Fancy - Live at the Los Angeles Forum - 11-04-1976 with Crazy Horse FLAC



Though the bootleg comes from a lo-fi audience tape, the excitement is still apparent. Typically, Young peppers his set with songs he has not yet recorded. "Like a Hurricane" would turn up in seven months on American Stars 'n Bars, but it's already a crowd-pleaser. "Campaigner," which leads off the nine-song acoustic set, would appear on Decade in a year. "Human Highway" and "Lotte Love" would be on Comes a Time a couple of years hence. "Pocahontas" would be on Rust Never Sleeps in 1979, "Too Far Gone" would have to wait for another decade and Freedom, and "Country Home" wouldn't be out legitimately until 1990's Ragged Glory. That's seven new songs out of 16, with the rest including such favorites as "After the Gold Rush," "Sugar Mountain," "Down by the River," "Cinnamon Girl," and "Cortez the Killer."

Lucky Thirteen - 1993 FLAC




This album is a "Best Of" album representing Neil's years on the Geffen record label. It was compiled by Neil at his Redwood Digital studios and was the last album he owed Geffen Records.

"Sample and Hold" is a longer version than appears on the Trans LP. The CD version features the same version as this album.

"Depression Blues" was originally recorded for what Neil calls Old Ways I, an album that Geffen Records rejected in 1983. He calls his 1985 country album Old Ways II

"Ain't It The Truth" was written by Neil back in the mid-sixties for his group - "Neil Young and The Squires".

Life - 1987 FLAC



Most of the album was recorded live in concert at the Universal Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA on November 18 and 19, 1986. "Mideast Vacation", "Around The World" and "When Your Lonely Heart Breaks" were recorded on the 18th, "Inca Queen", "Too Lonely" and "Prisoners Of Rock 'N' Roll" were recorded on the 19th. "Long Walk Home" is a mix of recordings from both these dates.

This was Young's last release on the Geffen label. The title and cover portray Young a prisoner of his own music. The number 5 is scratched into the wall of his jail cell - the very number of albums Young would release under Geffen Records.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - 1969 FLAC



While recording his first album, Neil Young met a band called The Rockets who were made up of Whitten, Talbot, Molina, Bobby Notkoff, and brothers George & Leon Whitsell. Neil recruited Whitten, Talbot, and Molina as his band, and named them Crazy Horse.
This album was recorded in just two weeks.

Neil Young - Congress Centrum Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany - 04-29-2003 (Solo Greendale) FLAC



Surrounded by acoustic guitars and three pianos, lit by candles the simplest of light shows, Young gives us 10 songs from the concept album Greendale, each introduced by lengthy and bizarre narratives.

Each song is untitled but Young, in the role of narrator, is, in sports terms, definitely in the zone. No one ever sat less still. Every part of his body is moving - knees wobbling, feet tapping, upper body swaying, head rolling as he grapples with his harmonica.

After a break, Young returns for an oldies set that is unstructured and, again, unpredictable. He rummages through a sheaf of papers in a box, seems to find the right song, harrumphs, tries out a few chords, then discards it. The ones that make the cut seem to echo the concerns of Greendale - 'After the Goldrush' (with its environmental theme), 'Old Man' (family). There's a barnstorming 'Cortez the Killer', on which his 12-string playing is outstanding: he sounds like an entire band on his own. The desolate title track from On the Beach is dusted down for only the second time in the past 25 years - and the equally ancient 'Campaigner' with that strangest of lines: 'Even Richard Nixon has got soul' is a further surprise.

Neil Young took the stage looking less like the Godfather of Grunge than a certified member of Woodstock Nation. He was wearing a tie-dyed Harley Davidson t-shirt with an eagle on his chest. "How ya doin'?" he asked the crowd.... Let's just rock a little bit." Young and company were so loose and raw that their sound made Pearl Jam seem polished by comparison. This was true garage rock. Young's guitar sound--he was playing his modified black Les Paul--was like the sonic equivalent of a blow torch cutting through an iron safe or the hull of some sunken pirate's ship. When Neil Young solos, it is an amazing thing to behold. His body moves back and forth in a jerky fashion. It is as if the music itself is grabbing his body, moving him against his will. His face gets all screwed up. One can see pain, frustration, anger and many more emotions flash across it. He becomes completely lost in the moment. Nothing else matters. His entire essence is felt in the notes he is playing. The Pearl Jam guys were immediately caught up in playing with their hero. Gossard was literally jumping up and down in place. Ament and McCready were playing with an intensity even more severe than when they played with Vedder earlier (if that is even possible).

Rocker Neil Young belts out a song Wednesday at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver.

While many point to his explosive rock shows with Crazy Horse as proof of lasting freshness, Young's timeless qualities are no less electrifying in an unplugged setting. Shorn of reverb, bedlam and din, his performance lays bare cornerstones of a craft that finds grandeur in simplicity: glorious melodies, evocative lyrics, guileless vocals.

All were amply evident at Wednesday's concert in the sold-out, 2,900-seat Queen Elizabeth Theatre, second stop on a rare solo acoustic tour. From the delicate opener Tell Me Why to the haunting encore Sugar Mountain, Young's two-hour serenade never fell short of bewitching. Mr. Soul himself fell under the spell, confessing after a flubbed start on After the Gold Rush that the wheezing pump organ "sounded so good, I forgot what I was doing."

Young, 53, never sounded better. His heartfelt plaint, though wan and wistful, didn't crack or waver through a 19-song set that darted from a lighthearted, banjo-tweaked Homegrown to the obscure yarn Last Trip to Tulsa to the deeply romantic Harvest Moon and Unknown Legend. And though he's the electric guitar's unrivaled demon of distortion, Young plucks acoustic models with elegant efficiency, plays piano with sturdy grace and knows his way around a harmonica.
