Primordial - Spirit The Earth Aflame (2000)

    Genre: Pagan Metal
    Length: 51:22
    Size: 363MB (374MB w/ extras)
    Format: FLAC

    Track List:
    1. Spirit the Earth Aflame
    2. Gods to the Godless
    3. The Soul Must Sleep
    4. The Burning Season
    5. Glorious Dawn
    6. The Cruel Sea
    7. Children of the Harvest
    8. To Enter Pagan

    Review: Metalcrypt (5/5)
This, Primordial's third full-length, was their first real masterpiece, and where the transformed from the noisy, woodsy Black Metal of Imrama into the epic pagan beast they have become. Leaving behind the generic sound of older works, these Irish forged their own sound and have never gone back.

Opening with the odd intro, with Nemtheanga intoning the lyrics like a manifesto while the war-drums pound, the band launches right into the monumental "Gods To The Godless" like a declaration of war. "I have one desire/ let it be/ a Plague upon your lands/ a Plague upon all your houses/ it is my wish to enslave all your people/ the soil enriched with their Blood." Huge riffs, thundering rhythms, and Nemtheanga's powerful, emotional vocals. The mastery never slows, not with the power of "The Soul Must Sleep" or the massive "Children Of The Harvest", and the album's centerpiece, the blazing bonfire of "The Burning Season". This is a more melodic album than the dark and angry The Gathering Wilderness or the dense, epic To The Nameless Dead, but it is no weaker for any of that. There is a repressing that also contains the other three tracks from The Burning Season EP plus a re-recording of "To Enter Pagan". Normally I decry bonus cuts, but these fit right in with the rest of the album both compositionally and recording-wise, and so they are like adding another 30 minutes of awesome to this already grand album. This is a magnificent work by one of the great bands when they were just hitting their stride. Essential.

Primordial have been together for almost 20 years now, slowly evolving from the rather generic "woodsy" Black Metal of their early days into the incredible beast they have become. Their last two albums Spirit The Earth Aflame and Storm Before Calm got a lot of press and attention, finally resulting in their being picked up by Metal Blade so they could finally get wider release. As always, a bigger label signing is cause for some concern, but Primordial have not taken a misstep, and their fifth album, The Gathering Wilderness, is nothing short of a masterwork.

I say Primordial are the true heirs to Quorthon's legacy, and I defy anyone to hear this album and tell me different. The Gathering Wilderness is hammerforged with huge, epic riffs that flow one into the other and carry the songs across the land like tidal waves. The sound is huge, fully as powerful as Bathory in their best works. Of all modern bands, perhaps only Graveland comes close to the force wielded here. There are no folk instruments as such, only a powerful atmosphere of heritage and pride, and the enormous emotion poured out by vocalist Alan Nemtheanga. He's not technically a very good singer, but he's not really 'singing' per se, or yelling or screaming. I can't really categorize his vocals at all. He just pours out so much raw, bleeding emotion that at times it's almost too much. Standouts are hard to pick out, as the album is a unified whole – indivisible. But the title track is just immense in every sense of the word, and "The Coffin Ships" kills me every time – Gods that Riff! If that ~love~ doesn't own you then nothing ever will.

This is just a monster of an album, and I can only shiver at the thought that Primordial only just hit their stride with Spirit, and are still coming into their own. This is not an album you love, this is an album you worship. Uncompromising. Brilliant. Flawless.

Primordial - To The Nameless Dead (2007)

    3. As Rome Burns

    8. No Nation On This Earth

    Review: Metalcrypt (5+/5)

I have been waiting and waiting for this one, as Primordial are one of those bands, like Summoning or Kamelot, that I expect great things from; bands that reach beyond genre to create defining and iconoclastic art. Primordial are perhaps the most moving and emotional band anywhere, and they mean what they say very deeply. Maybe only an Irish band could create music so deeply soaked in pride and tragedy as what Primordial created with The Gathering Wilderness. And To The Nameless Dead is another masterwork of pride, power, and feeling.

An angrier, heavier album than their last one, To The Nameless Dead is a collection of anthems to nationalism and sacrifice. They have taken their epic Black Metal base and forged a heavier, more violent behemoth from it, piling riff on riff into a monolith so layered and dense you just can't get it in one listen. This is not an impenetrable density like The Ruins Of Beverast, this is a sound that has big riffs that are immediately memorable, but there are layers on layers, and innumerable listens cannot exhaust the pleasures of this music, as every spin reveals something new. Alan Neamthega has never sounded as good as he does here. Never more emotional, he is less raw this time out, and his strong, clear vocals thunder through this album, far more controlled but just as heartfelt as before.

A lot of metal - and music in general - is not really about anything beyond 'ooh, listen to this', but Primordial are so much more serious in their intent. The title of the album itself refers to the millions who have come and gone before us, whose blood stains the earth and wets the mortar of our nations, and who remain forever unremembered as individuals. The album is about nationhood: what it means, what it costs, and what it destroys. It's not a polemic, it's a meditation, and it is a testament to their talent and unswerving, uncompromising vision that they have managed to make such serious music kick so much ass. From any perspective you choose, To The Nameless Dead is the album of the year.
