Strawbs - From The Witchwood (1971)


Following the success of Antiques And Curios, the same line-up recorded its first studio album. However, musical differences emerged, which caused the making of Witchwood to be very uncomfortable, with Hudson, Ford and Cousins arguing about tracks for the album, and Wakeman being so busy with sessions work that he frequently had to overdub his parts later. It is nevertheless many a fan's favourite, with some wonderful, haunting songs, many of which have stood the test of time and are still part of the live set today.

Strawbs - Grave New World (1972)


Grave New World is the favourite album of many a Strawbs fan, a perfect mix of the band's folk-based heritage with Dave Cousins' growing interest in the rock world. A loosely conceptual album, it contains many of the Strawbs' best known songs: "New World", "Benedictus" and "Heavy Disguise", all of which were released as singles round the world. It was also Strawbs' biggest selling album in the UK (though not the highest chart position they ever achieved).

Strawbs - Ghosts (1974)


Ghosts largely carried on from where Hero And Heroine left off, the big, mellotron-laden sound which found popularity particularly with North American audiences very much in evidence, though some slight lightening of mood. The epic title track stands out particularly, and "The Life Auction" proved to be well-received live. "Grace Darling", inspired both by the Northumbrian heroine of that name and Cousins' happier personal life, was released as a single.

Strawbs - Nomadness (1975)


The Strawbs' last studio album for A&M Records saw them turn away from the big keyboard sound that had characterised the last few albums (they'd just lost John Hawken who was not replaced by a full-time keyboard player - Andy Richards - until 1978) and adopt a lighter touch. There's no focal point, no epic as with previous offerings. With hindsight, possibly, the move may have been a mistake, as the album did far less well in the US than the previous two. Nevertheless, although perhaps a little disjointed, Nomadness is full of different shades and textures - Cousins even picked up the dulcimer again for "The Golden Salamander" and there are a few classic Strawbs tracks which deserve more prominence - "Hanging In The Gallery" in particular.

Strawbs - Deep Cuts (1976)


With Deep Cuts, Cousins, now writing as a team with Chas Cronk, attempted to find a new vein of quality pop/rock and thereby achieve commercial success (and but for a breach in the rules about record returns, the single "I Only Want My Love To Grow In You" might well have marked the band's return to the UK charts).

The album, released through the Strawbs' new record deal with Oyster Records, featured new producers and new sessions keyboard players, Robert Kirby and John Mealing, who would join the band as they resumed UK touring in 1976. It contains some classic tracks - as well as the single, the energy of "Simple Visions", "Beside The Rio Grande" and "Turn Me Round" contrasted with the production perfection of "Hard Hard Winter".

Strawbs - Ringing Down The Years (1991)


Initially released only in Canada by Virgin Records, the Strawbs last full scale studio album features a number of new songs as well as a few reworkings of classic Strawbs tracks: "Tell Me What You See In Me" is given a new rock identity, whilst the live version of "Grace Darling" incorporating Willoughby's scorching lead guitar solos, which had become a popular part of the Strawbs' live performance, was captured for posterity. The rare single The King was re-recorded, this time with Cathy Lesurf rather than Maddy Prior) and the new writing team of Demick/Hudson/Willoughby had two offerings on the album. Unusually (dictated by the requirements for indigenous Canadian content), the single and opening track was a non-Strawbs track - Might As Well Be On Mars, which nevertheless fits well into the Strawbs mould.

This album was originally issued as a single CD in Canada only in 1991. It was later released as a double CD set with Don't Say Goodbye in 1998.

Strawbs - Heartbreak Hill (Released 1995; Recorded 1978)



With a full-time keyboard player - Andy Richards - back in the band, Strawbs found a new lease of life in mid '78, heading back into the studio to record the first track for their new album, "Something For Nothing". Sadly, the scheduling for the rest of the album conflicted with Dave Lambert's plans for a solo album, and Dave departed, leaving the rest of the album to be cut with sessions axemen Jo Partridge and Miller Anderson.

The title track and the complex "Starting Over" are particularly noteworthy, and the Strawbs rediscovered their sense of humour with the toungue-in-cheek "Desert Song". An excellent return to form, with Tom Allom back at the controls, it sadly remained unreleased when both the Strawbs' management and record deals fell apart. A deal with Elton John's Rocket label was almost in the bag, when Cousins himself left to work in local radio, precipitating the demise of the band.
