Asterix was a direct predecessor of Lucifer's Friend; released one (eponymous) album in 1970. Technically, this was the first Lucifer's Friend album, only under a different name. Also, one single was released featuring a slightly altered line-up, without John's involvement.
Peter Hesslein began his musical career way back in 1963 with a band called the Giants. Peter Hecht and Dieter Horns were both members of a group known as the German Bonds, from 1965 onwards. Peter Hesslein joined the Bonds in 1968 which survived until 1970.

This is the debut album of this very talented group featuring John Lawton's amazing vocals (he sounds better here than he did with Uriah Heep), heavy organ and guitar riffs and good songs. The sound on this album is similar to Deep Purple or Uriah Heep but has a more dark and haunting atmosphere. This album lacks the brass, moog-synth and electric piano that can be found on future Lucifer's Friend albums.

This, the second album from classic progg-metal group Lucifer's Friend is even better than their self-titled debut album. This album is more progressive while still maintaining heavy guitar riffs. The second track "Rose On The Wine" is fantastic, it starts of with a beautiful piano intro that evolves and gives way to a heavy guitar riff. This song also has a long acoustic guitar solo in the middle and at the end complex backward riffs and tempo changes, great! It must also be said that even the art cover and the lyrics are very tasteful indeed (something that rarely can be said about classic metal albums) and John Lawton's vocals are strong and beautiful. This album is highly recommended for both 70's metal fans and progg fans. But if you are strictly a prog fan you should perhaps start with the excellent "Banquet" album instead.

'I'm Just A Rock’n’Roll Singer' was first issued on the Vertigo label in 1973 and proved a splendid example of the band's maturing style with fine performances like 'Groovin' Stone,' 'Born On The Run,' 'Blind Freedom' and 'Rock'n'Roll Singer.' It was their second album on the prestigious Vertigo label that specialised in showcasing progressive music.
The album was a considerable success, particularly in America where it was voted best record of the year in some U.S. cities. It was a tremendous boost for the German rock scene.

"Banquet" is Lucifer's Friends progressive masterpiece. It has none of the heavy guitar and organ riffs of their debut album. Instead this album i filled with strings, electric piano and moog-syntheziser. It also has a much more laid back sound compared to the dark and haunting sound of the two first albums. John Lawton's vocals are as usual fantastic and the whole band are really impressive instrumentalists. If you are into classic 70's heavy metal you should start with the self-titled debut or the more proggressive but still heavy (and great) "Where the Groupies Killed the Blues" from '72. I myself really like all those incarnations of Lucifer's Friend and consider them one of my all time favorite bands. But if you only want one Lucifer's Friend album this is the one to own I think. A Masterpiece!

Mind Exploding" sees Lucifer's Friend return to shorter and more conventional song structures. That is not to say, however, that they have abandoned prog rock all together. There are still moog solos and interesting instruments like the sitar (or something that sounds like a sitar) John Lawton's vocals are still fantastic (as ever) and the songs are generally good.
This is the last album Lawton made with Lucifer's Friend before he left to join Uriah Heep. And "Mind Exploding" actually sounds quite much like Uriah Heep's "Firefly" (the first albums Lawton made with Uriah Heep) If you like the John Lawton era Uriah Heep albums you will probably like "Mind Exploding" too. But if you like more proggressive "Banquet" album from '74 you will perhaps find "Mind Exploding" a bit too straightforward rock'n'roll album. If you want to get into Lucifer's Friend you should either start with the more progressive “Banquet” or the more heavy “Where the Groupies Killed the Blues” from ’72 or their self-titled debut from ’70.

Mind Exploding established a holding pattern and tried to combine the jazz of Banquet with the garage-rock of Rock & Roll Singer, but was not as well received as the earlier albums. Vocalist John Lawton left in 1976 to join Uriah Heep and was replaced by Mike Starrs, former vocalist with Colosseum II. John Lawton returned for the 1981 album Mean Machine. On the two albums without Lawton they moved to a more commercial sound, on 1978's Good Time Warrior and 1980's Sneak Me In.
John Lawton's 1980 solo album on RCA, Heartbeat, was a Lucifer's Friend album in everything but name, with the lineup from Sneak Me In performing as backup musicians on that project. Lawton's official return, Mean Machine, found the band returning to heavy metal, this time in the vein of Foreigner and Bad Company. The band officially broke up in 1982 but briefly reformed in the early 1990s to release a new CD, Sumo Grip.
