    The partially fictionalized film is set in 1977, the year in which Callas died, and centers on the making of a movie of Georges Bizet's Carmen. The diva, whose now-ragged voice is well past its prime, is persuaded to star in it by longtime friend and former manager Larry Kelly, who abandoned classical music to become a rock impresario. He insists by lip-synching to her old recording she will recapture her lost youth and leave behind a priceless legacy for her admirers, and his theory is supported by Callas confidante and journalist Sarah Keller.

    En 1977, Maria Callas, la plus grande star lyrique que le monde ait jamais connue, vit recluse dans son appartement parisien. Bien que sa voix ne soit plus celle de ses belles années, un ami producteur, Larry Kelly, lui propose d'interpréter Carmen dans un film, en synchronisant, grâce aux nouvelles technologies, sa voix lorsqu'elle était plus jeune aux images actuelles. Tout d'abord hésitante, elle accepte finalement le projet, avec le soutien de Sarah, son amie journaliste. Carmen tourné, Larry essaie de convaincre Maria de se prêter de nouveau à cet exercice avec Tosca. Mais, ne supportant plus d'avoir recours à ce stratagème, elle exige cette fois-ci de chanter avec sa voix d'aujourd'hui. Les associés de Larry refusent...
