The Sign Of The Cross (1932)

Starring the beautiful Claudette Colbert, in the film that made her a star, and Charles Laughton as the evil Roman emperor, Nero, This is the Cecil B. DeMille classic. that almost single-handedly brought about the introduction of movie censorship through the highly restrictive Hays Production Code. Featuring graphic scenes of Roman debauchary, and vivid, gory depictions of the human slaughter that took place in the infamous Roman arena, this film was condemmed by the Catholic Legion of Decency, and outright banned in some cities. It was drastically cut when rereleased in 1944 when the Code was in full force. A totally ridiculous WWII bomber sequence was added at the beginning. It was believed for many years that an original uncut print of this film no longer existed. Then an uncut print was discovered in the deceased DeMille's private archive. Although some sections had deterioated, the cut scenes were all there. By replacing the deterioated portions of this print with sections preserved in more recent prints, a fully restored version emerged just as it was first shown 1n 1932. Released for a short time on VHS, it was later taken out of print. Now available only as part of the new DeMille box set, this film has never been released as a standalone DVD This is the full, uncut 125 min. version as it appears in the box set. Not recommended for children. The great pre-code classic
